Everwood - History
Everwood was founded by three mystic Humans known as the Mind, the Body, and the Soul. These are not their names, it was more their titles. No one's sure where they came from, or why they chose these names, at least no one that's telling. It was founded in the 1500s on top an overlap of magical lay lines. Beneath the surface of the Earth there are thousands of lines of magic that intersect randomly across the globe. An intersection of the lines is fairly uncommon, but in no way rare. Everwood is built atop "the Nexus," an intersection of three of these lines in the same exact spot, something that is exceedingly rare.
The town's founders built a library over the Nexus, turning the bottom floor into an impenetrable fortress to keep evil from gaining control of the Nexus. Over the years, active magic began to fade from the younger generation, with no one truly knowing the reason. Knowing the world was beginning to turn its back on magic, ignoring the Angels and Demons, who had begun to hide or blend in. Knowing the Nexus would continue to attract both good and evil, they decided to seal Everwood away.
Raising up a powerful barrier, they split Everwood in two, creating an alternate dimension in the small town. The two dimensions overlap, one in the 'real world' with only the humans of Everwood, and the other side, the Demons and Angels. In between, the door to the Nexus, still guarded by the founder's powerful magics. The dimensions cannot see, feel, hear, or effect the other in any way. Occasionally, a very powerful being has managed to slip through the barrier, but very few, even when it was first erected, even know of the barrier's existence.
Everwood Curse
The "Everwood Curse" is a name popularized at Everwood High School. An unintended side effect of the barrier prevents moving, either to Everwood or away from it. Short trips can be made to or from the town, but after to long, a powerful yearning fills those that have left, the barrier trying to drag them back into its protective fold. At the same time, Humans trying to move into the town have a similar problem. It dislikes this 'invasion' of its town, and tries to force the interloper away.
Now, it may seem like it, but the barrier is in no way sentient.
Both of these effects, moving away or in, can be circumvented by a powerful being. However, since magic had almost completely vanished from the human part of the town, no one has ever moved away and stayed gone, the longest having been Elayne Eiyle and her family, gone for two years. Let's avoid to many people moving in, 'kay?
Everwood - Now
The year is 2010, and Everwood has its largest group of active magic teens in over a century. However, most of them are just coming into their powers, if they've even started that yet. The town's oldest resident is the only skilled magic user remaining, and she spends most of her time locked up in the old library, believed by everyone to be an eccentric old loony. The library itself is otherwise deserted, its shelves bare, replaced by a government run library in the next town sometime in the late 1980s.
Something else is beginning to happen. The barrier is beginning to crack, Angels and Demons beginning to see through to the human side, able to effect the other side of the barrier somewhat. Some of the more powerful ones able to slip through the barrier entirely. Those that are developing active powers are slowly being able to see through the barrier as well, some even being able to slip into it to fight the more malicious among these... others.
Everwood - Races
Humans - "Human" means exactly what you'd think it does. It encompasses every Homo Sapien on Earth, all the races. More prone to science than most of the others (with a few individual exceptions) and less inclined towards magic. However, Humans also display the widest range of Active Magic, overlapping many Demon and Angels powers, as well as some unique of their own.
Angels - "Angel" is a broad term, containing many races, often more human in appearance than their Demon counterparts. Angels do not have any powers that they share with only Demons, only splitting with both Humans, or Humans and Demons. Unlike you might be thinking, not all Angels are good, it's a personal thing, just like with Humans. There are good ones, evil ones, neutral ones, what have you.
Demons - "Demon" is a broad term, containing many races. Unlike their angelic counterparts, most demons are not very human-like, with several key exceptions, namely Vampires. Demons are not always evil, it is an individual choice, much like Humans. there are good Demons, evil Demons, etc.. With a Demon, size does not matter, the most powerful demons often taking on human-like forms if possible. Weaker Demons are often quite large or small. Note; I said weaker, not weak, And I said often, not always. Demons have a wide variety of abilities, and share none of them with Angels, only sharing powers with Humans or Humans AND Angels.
Everwood Magic
Magic exists naturally in the world, running in lines beneath the crust of the Earth. This magic fuels many things on the planet, and is not wholly understood by everyone, or really anyone. However, this is raw magic and attempting to tap directly into the lay lines is extremely dangerous and difficult.
The Nexus - The Nexus is a larger gathering of magic, located directly under the Everwood library. It is an intersection of three lay lines, and attracts many magical beings to it. The massive amount of magic that it creates is enough to turn even the weakest of magic wielders into a god, or rip even the strongest of magic wielders to pieces. Because of how dangerous it is, it has been closely guarded for centuries before the construction of the barrier. To keep one side or the other from getting control of it, the barrier's creators placed the door to the Nexus in between the two Everwoods, and it will only appear again when the barrier is completely destroyed. Its current guardian is the town's oldest resident, who remains locked up in her library day and night.
Inactive Magic - Inactive Magic, or spells, is what most people think of when they think of magic. Spells cast through words, chants, symbols, etc.. However, these things don't actually matter in the actual casting, but make it significantly less difficult, not in any way easy, but less difficult. Inactive Magic is the process of manipulating natural magic to do what is desired. This magic can do almost anything if someone can find a way to manipulate the natural magic to do it. Almost everyone, Human, Angel, or Demon, can use it, but it is extremely difficult for one without an active power to perform, sort of a 1 in a 1 000 000 coincidence thing. Inactive Magic is always much more difficult to control for long periods, and/or in large quantities, of time than Active Magic, and as such is usually weaker.
Active Magic - Active Magic is different than Inactive Magic in the sense that all power comes from the individual. An Active Magic, or power, can be almost anything; from controlling water to summoning monsters to energy bursts. Almost anything imaginable, although multiple active powers are stupidly rare. The strength of the power depends on the individual and the amount of training they have received, but it is usually more powerful than the same power used through inactive magic. Ex. Person A uses Inactive Magic to turn a puddle of water into a whip. Person B uses their Active Magic ability to turn a lake of water into a giant dragon.
Sages - A sage is a very rare breed of magic user that is always Human. A sage's Active Magic is Inactive Magic. Put simply, their active power is the ability to control natural magic, allowing them far greater effects of Inactive Magic than anyone else, but they lack the advantage of one specialty, making their training very difficult, and, with one exception, are never as good in a single magic type than someone who has only it as their active powers.
The Omnisage - The Omnisage was a woman that history remembers only as Cyla. She is believed to be the most powerful sage to ever exist, capable of creating anything with just a thought. Her true magic level, and even her very existence, is often debated hotly in the magical world. She is believed to have created a large number of magic artifacts that still exist today.
Imbued Magic - Imbued Magic is magic that has been imprinted on an object, person, or area. This is most commonly done in one of three ways.
1. Magical Imprisonment - Someone's soul (or in rare cases, their physical being) is imprisoned in an object. This causes the wielder of the object to be able to use the powers of the one imprisoned within it. However, the risks of using this power can be freeing the being sealed within, risk of corruption or possession by the object, and/or having the one sealed in it capable of talking to the user, directly into their mind. Their entire physical being is more difficult to imprison, but it gives more power to the object/person/thing they are sealed within.
2. Siphoning - After years of use, an Active Magic user might (on purpose or accident) store some of their power in an object they constantly keep on their person. One of the main reasons being so they can have extra power if they need it later. Another person can use the object and wield their power, but they are limited to the amount stored in the object. It is possible fr the magic to replenish if the one that stored their energy inside the object placed all, or at least most, of their energy in the object.
3. Extended Spell - This is a spell that is not intended to fade with time. This is most often curses, which cause negative (usually) effects to whatever touches, or something along those lines, the cursed... thing. The barrier is one example of an extended spell.
Everwood - The World
The world is the same as ours is. Most people ignore magic, dismiss it as fairy tales and fake. Most Demons and Angels live in their own communities, hidden from the world. However, many live in the larger, or small, Human cities, blending in as best they can; any slight differences about them being dismissed by Humans as odd, but not mystical. Will this change? Only time will tell....
Vampires According to Kirby
Vampires are different depending on the person who creates the story, and Everwood is no exception. My vampires are different than most mainstream, so deal with it.
1. No. Sparkling. Period.
2. Vampires are alive. there are only 3 major differences between them and normal Humans, discussed below.
3. Vampires are highly allergic to Vitamin D, present in Sunlight, in high doses. This extends to foods that contain it as well. Thus, they can go out in short spurts in sunlight without many negative effects, cloudy days, and moonlight. They will not burst into flames if they're outside, but they can become seriously ill or die from prolonged exposure to the vitamin.
4. Vampire’s bodies have difficulty handling processed meat, causing them to eat most foods very rare or raw. Because of this, their canines are longer than the average human, to help chew the tough meat.
5. Vampires have a very prolonged life span. Humans age 8 years in the time it takes a Vampire to age 1.
6. The Thirst is a vampiric cannibalism, considered by some a mental illness, that affects a small percentage of Vampires. They begin to eat living prey, extending to Humans, Vampires, and other sentient forms of life. This is very frowned upon in just about all societies, and they are often placed in prison, mental asylums, or something along those lines.
7. Vampires can be real vegetarians. As in, eating actual vegetables.
8. Vampire blood is very dark, much like human blood when dry. This is one of the things that gave rise to the myth of them being undead.
9. Vampirism is not contagious. They are a race of people, not a disease.
The City of Everwood
Welcome to the city of Everwood, a city that is divided... in more ways than one.
