Humans; they don’t see what lives in the forest any more. My story is odd, since you may think I don’t exist. Yeah I’m a werewolf, lycan, child of the full moon, whatever you want to call me I’m alive. I live with my tribe, and we travel a lot. Moving from place to place to avoid the hunters, humans who know we are alive. My best friend, Keith, well he has been a little odd lately. It maybe something about him being turned into one of us as a baby like the others think, but I don’t think it is. In truth, I saw him act a little, well crazy yesterday.

We were heading into the city to mess with the werewolves that live there. I mean they reject what they are, and try to live with the humans, eating that stuff that smells terrible. It happened so fast, I didn’t see the glint of silver, until the arrow hit my leg. I cried out, the wound burning terribly. You wouldn’t understand the pain that I was in, worse than burning your hand in a fire, and I felt my energy leaving me. I tried to pull out the arrow, the shine of the silver tip gleaming in the early sun. Keith took his spear out of the holder on his back, and went to attack the hunter. Calling him foul names, growling like the wolf inside us. I looked away, the wound bleeding fairly well. I know we heal fast, but silver keeps that from happening. I ripped a bit of the fabric off the bottom of my dress, and wrapped it around the wound until it could heal. I could smell blood being spilt, the metallic taste almost in my mouth. I know Keith was a fighter, we had practice fights often. I had a small pouch of daggers, a quiver of arrows and my bow on my back. I could have fought, but he jumped in. I looked over, the hunter’s brown eyes void of life, and Keith jumping around from a silver burn.

“Need some help that looks bad” I asked, standing up from the cool grass.

“That would be nice, d*mn hunter. He said that I was a puppy afraid of metal” he said, the anger still in his voice, but his eyes were soft to me. We started to head back to the tribe’s camp, I was still wondering about how he reacted. It was just so out there that I didn’t know what to think. When we got back to the camp, the elders were starting to tell the story of the Elder Wolves. It was my favorite, and I hurried over, for a split second the hunter forgotten as I was taken into the story. Keith sat next to me, it didn’t mean anything, and we were best friends. He didn’t show respect to the elders, and I did my best to remind him that they let him into the tribe when he was turned. Unlike him, I was born his way, never knowing what it was like to be human. The story was over to soon, and the spell that was woven through their words was broken. I stood up to go to my small tent that I slept in, my parents missing. Well that’s what I was told anyway. I think hunters got to them. I could take care of myself. I grabbed the wooden flute that I cherished, worn smooth from years of playing it. I made my way over to the fire, the shadows cast familiar. I sat where I had during the story, and started to play. The melody soft and haunting, a perfect song for the end of fall. It would snow soon, and we would have to move to another camp soon. Humans would see the smoke from the fire without the cover of trees. I looked over to Keith, his wolf like ears dropping. It had been a long day for the both of us. Tomorrow would be longer, the full moon was soon. I could feel it, we all could. The pull, feeling of being free, our true selves. We were wolves trapped in human like bodies, the ears and tails a reminder of what is inside us all. We couldn’t help but act like the wolves at times, more so than those city werewolves. I stopped playing, a smirk on my face.

“I win, well goodnight” I said, and stood up.

“D*mn it Yuki” Keith mumbled. Yeah I know my name just doesn’t seem to fit, but in the tribe there is a mix of names. We have more than just American sounding, but that just depends on where we came from. I walked into my tent, and laid on the soft mat, pulling the blanket over me. Sleep came quickly, and before I knew it was morning.

You ask, I provide. ^^

I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to find the small brush I had. I felt the fur from my ears, just used to the feeling under the skin of my fingers. My wolf like ears stood up, from being flattened in my sleep. I walked out, stomach growling. Tonight I could hunt, when we felt free, but for now I saw a small rabbit on the fire. It calmed the human inside me, but the animal was calling for fresh kill. I know it’s wrong, but the tribe hunts humans on the full moon. It’s instinct, plus it is revenge to the hunters for killing our kind.

Keith sat next to me, and he looked a mess. I offered some of the rabbit, but he said that he wasn’t hungry.

“Is something wrong?” I asked, since he wasn’t one not to eat breakfast.

“Rough night” he answered, sounding tired. I sighed, forcing the rabbit into his hands, since I was full.

“Nightmare? You know you can tell me anything. We grew up together.”

He sighed, “Just an endless labyrinth.”

“That’s where the ring could be. I’ll talk with the elders.” I stood up, and headed to the largest tent in the camp. We don’t have a leader, rather the elders. The rest of us can care for ourselves. I smiled, just thinking as I walked. How do I feel about him? We grew up together. Me settled into the stories of the tribe, and him… pulling my head out of the clouds to have some fun. The tent was in front of me now, and I pushed aside the flap, and headed in.

“Welcome child” a man that looked in his early eighties. His hair now silver with age, and a pair of black wolf like ears on his head. We all carried some sort of visible trait of the wolf in side us. I smiled, and gave a respectful bow. I sat on the small brown mat on the ground, my legs crossed.

“Do you know anything about the Lunar Ring?” I asked, my dark eyes looking at the five elders.

“Follow the moon in the city cemetery, and you will find the ring” they said, and I stood up.

“Thank you” I walked out of the tent, and saw Keith walk up to me. I gave a smile, not caring about the rumors that we were a couple. It couldn’t be, but then again you never know what life has planned for you.

“What news do the old men hold?” he asked, and I scowled. He never showed much respect to the elders.

“You should respect the elders Keith, they did take you into the tribe” I started, “but yeah we have news. The ring is so close, in the city in fact.” I didn’t want to say it, but I didn’t want to go alone. The thought of hunters, and I had no sense of direction. In the few months our tribe had been here, I had gotten lost to many times to count. That’s just in the forest looking for the river!

“I owe nothing to them. They killed my parents, and turned me into this” he started, “But I’m glad to not be human, so weak.” I just sighed; we had this argument so many times. It was easy to think we did this for fun.

“Will you come to the city with me? I don’t want to go alone, and I don’t want to run into hunters again.” When he nodded my day brightened. The rest of the tribe was boring, and in a way we were the trouble makers. I hurried to my tent for the bow, quiver, and pouch of daggers. I was skilled with both weapons, but they were no match for the hunter’s guns. I at least felt safer with the leather, and wood. The metal daggers were cold, but sharp perfect for stabbing or throwing. I ran out of my tent to see Keith already had his spear and whip ready to go. We headed out together, and I stole a glance over to him. Something was new about him, like something changed in both of us. I couldn’t put my finger on it though. What changed? Was it that we are starting to like each other more than friends? This isn’t the time to think like this. I was so deep in thought that I missed that we were being followed by a hunter girl. Keith did, and said something. I just shrugged it off; he was so protective lately though.
