Introduction
Russian is a Slavic language, and one of the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages. It is the official language of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, and many other former Soviet countries. The Russian language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which consists of 33 letters.

Alphabet
Аа = a
Бб = b
Вв = v
Гг = g
Дд = d
Ее = ye
Ёё = yo
Жж = zh
Зз = z
Ии = ee or i
Йй = y
Кк = k
Лл = l
Мм = m
Нн = n
Оо = o or a
Пп = p
Рр = r
Сс = s
Тт = t
Уу = oo
Фф = f
Хх = kh
Цц = tz
Чч = ch
Шш = sh
Щщ = shch
Ъъ = hard sign
Ыы = i
Ьь = soft sign
Ээ = e
Юю = u
Яя = ya

Please memorize, and familiarize yourself with the Russian alphabet!!! I cannot stress this enough. It is necessary to learn Russian.

Notes on the Alphabet

1. The letter
Ъ is called the "hard sign". It is placed between a consonant and either е, ё, ю or я
to keep the consonant it follows hard.

Подъезд
entrance
pahd-yazd

2. The letter Ь is called the "soft sign". It has no sound of its own, but it acts to soften the consonant that it follows. Although there is no direct equivalent symbol in English, the English language does differentiate between hard and soft consonants (the "t" in "hat" can be "softer" than the "t" in "top" , and the "l" in "liaison" is "softer" than the "l" in "lobster"). Example of the soft sign in common Russian words:

День
day
dyen

3. When о is not stressed, it becomes an "ah" sound, like the "a" in "attorney":

Хорошо
good
khah-rah-shoh

4. The letter Х does not have an equivalent sound in English. It is, however, like the Scottish "ch" in "loch" and the German "ch" in "Bach".

Notes on the Alphabet Cont.

5. At the end of a word, the pronunciation of the following consonants changes:

Usual

б (b) as in "bed":
Бог God
bok

в (v) as in "very":
вино wine
vee-noh

г (g) as in "good":
год year
got

д (d) as in "dog"
дом home/house
dom

з (z) as in "zoo"
зуб tooth
zoop

ж (zh) as in "measure"
жара heat
zhah-rah

End of a word

б (p) as in "hip"
Гроб Casket
grop

в (f) as in "feather"
нерв nerve
nyerf

г (k) as in "crook"
флаг flag
flahk

д (t) as in "cat"
сад garden
saht

з (s) as in "sip"
мороз frost
mah-ros

ж (sh) as in "shave"
нож knife
nosh

6. The letter г is usually pronounced like the "g" in "good".

7. In the combination of letters: его (yeh-voh) and ого (ah-voh) г is pronounced "v" when the vowel preceding г, either е or о, is not stressed.

Example:

Всего хорошего!
All the best!
fsee-yoh khah-roh-sheh-vah

I also recommend you listening to these Disney songs dubbed in Russian. Not for translation purposes yet, just for helping you get used to how the accent sounds, and it will help you learn different letter sounds. It gets you familiar with speaking Russian, just keep listening to the song over and over until you can sing it. Then practice your accent and Russian by singing. Its what helps me.

Lesson 1

About the lesson: In this lesson, I will be teaching you how to read, and translate Cyrillic to Latin letters. A short lesson that is essential to learning Russian. As soon as everyone shows they can do it, we will move on to lesson 2. Please if you need any help at all, feel free to send me a PM.

Please use the Russian alphabet listed in the introductory section as a reference. We will first transliterate some Russian words that are also English words. Transliterate the following words into the English equivalents.

Example:
Кока-Кола = (koh-kah-koh-lah) = Coca Cola

1. Теннис
2. Доллар
3. Баскетбол
4. Доктор
5. Ныю-Йорк
6. Калифорния
7. Бейсбол
8. Университет
9. Адрес
10. Пепси-Кола

12. Футбол
13. Президент
14. Телефон
15. Бар
16. Ресторан
17. Мафия
18. Такси

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This next exercise will help you to become more familiar with some of the letters in the Russian alphabet. The approximate English equivalent sound is given and you must write down the Russian letter. If you are unable to install the Russian font on your computer, then please just copy and paste the letter from the alphabet list.

Example:
(y) in young = Й

1. (a) in car
2. (ya) in yankee
3. (e) in every
4. (ye) in yet
5. (i) in thing
6. (ee) in street
7. (o) in north
8. (yo) in yogurt
9. (oo) in cool
10. (u) in union

DO NO post your answers here. Please send them in a PM to me. I don't want people cheating and copying answers. If you have any trouble with the assignment then message me I'll help.

These lessons are great! They probably take forever to make, huh?
One thing:
I was always taught that "pen" was "перо", (er.... per-o?)
If you what you said is right, what is "перо"?
