Jupi's Guide to RP Fighting

Welcome to my guide. This is now standard protocol for all roleplay based fights within Galbadia. There is currentley seperate guidelines for number based fights (ask the Headmaster about this). This guide should cover everything, though if you have questions, drop me a PM.

EDIT: This guide was originally intended for Galbadia Garden. You will find a few references in it, forgive me (:.

Please do not post random conversation on this guide - questions, suggestions and comments are most welcome.

Stage one - The general guidelines

1. Write as best you can.

I know we can't all write 10 paragraphs of rich, flowing prose but the more you write and the easier it is to read, the easier it will be to roleplay.

"sephiroth wlaked 2 the edge of teh arena"

"Sephiroth walked to the edge of the area."

You can already see which one is easier to read! It will help your opponent as well. As a general rule, the more you write, the more your opponent has to write about which is always a good thing. A few thoughts / feelings / habits etc. won't go amiss either. (This isn't a must, just a suggestion!)

2. Think it through!

In life, fights happen, obviously. Do people take turns? Not really! Sometimes, it's a good idea to write what would happen if you miss, if you hit, or if you partially hit. Example below.

"Sephiroth went for a lunge with his sword. If he hit, he would pull the blade free and dodge backwards to try and defend against any resistance. If he missed, he would be off balance and vunerable to a counter attack. If he only caught his enemy, he'd probably have to make a retreat backwards so he could think of a next move."

It helps people to know how you will respond to what they chose to happen. It makes fights have more flow and feel less 'turn based' (like in certain RPGs >.>)

3. Be realistic!

Lots of characters have lots of different powers, we all know that. Be you a shapeshifter, a warrior, a caster, a summoner... we all have skills and we all have weaknesses.

It's unlikely that you'll be able to backflip round the arena casting Firaga and throwing shuriken, isn't it? The rules of reality are obvious warped in roleplaying (especially this kind of roleplay!) where we all have massive weapons and can summon dragons, but it's important to keep it as close as we can get.

Like, someone with stick thin arms and legs couldn't do a back flip.

Someone with a whacking great sword in their hand and heavy armour is unlikely to run at 1000mph are they?

It all boils down to being fair with yourself and your opponent.. x)

4. Help is always an option!

Completley stuck? Ask a more advanced roleplayer. Not everyone is at the same RP level and we can only grow if we help each other. Asking advice is the best way to grow as a roleplayer - especially when learning to do fight roleplay.

Stage two - Godmodding/Powerplay; a worked example

I'm now going to show a worked example of powerplaying and godmodding. This is a big no in roleplaying as it affects the fairness of fighting and how the fight works, often leading to arguement and unbeleivable feats of invincibility!

Godmodding-
Controlling another player's character

Powerplaying-
Not taking any damage, being invicible, invunerable and generally undefeatable.

The bad example

The following is a very bad example of a RP fight. I'm not going on length, but look at what's happening and how it escalates...

Player 1

Player1 pulled a shotgun from the holster on his thigh and shot three times. Two of the shots hit Player2 in the leg and one hit him in the chest. Player1 laugh and ran up really close, drawing his dagger.

Player2

Player1 thought he had shot Player2 three times but none of the shots hit because of Player2's phase armour. This meant the bullets went straight through him, hitting the wall behind him. As Player1 approched with the dagger, Player2 punched him in the face, breaking his nose.

Player1

Player1 was really angry and his nose hurt but not much because Player2 was really weak. He stabbed Player2 in the stomach then kicked him over.

Player2

Player2 didn't fall over though. He only stumbled. Then he draw his sword and simply stabbed Player1 through the chest, instantley killing him.

Okay, so maybe that last post was a little extreme, but you get the idea...

The good example!

That last example was pants right? This is how it should have gone...

Player1

Player1 pulled a shotgun from the holster on his thigh and shot three times. Two of the shots were aimed to hit Player2 in the leg and one was aimed at his chest. Player1 laughed and ran up really close, drawing his dagger.

Player2

Player1 shot at Player2 three times. One shot was right on the mark, hitting him in his leg. He flinched, greatful that his phase armour absorbed the other two hits. As Player1 approched with the dagger, Player2 aimed to punch him in the face, trying to break his nose.

Player1

Player1 was really angry and his nose hurt where Player2 had hit him. He tried to stab Player2 in the stomach then kick him over in retaliation.

Player2

Player2 didn't fall over though he got kicked. He only stumbled. Then he draw his sword and tried to simply stab Player1 through the chest, trying to go for an instant kill.

And so you see how it should be!
