So I have this theory about how some of the air Nomads might have survived.

Quite simply, there was an argument within the ranks and they booked it when the barest whispers of war started. The argument started over the most simple things(ish) and escalated to a point where neither group could really get along with the other.

Thus, the dissidents began to look for a new home, finding it hidden in the very skies they loved. A floating island (You cannot tell me that with all the crazy stuff in AtlA there's no floating islands) named Lemuria, thought to be lost long ago. Its up there that the rebels made thier new home and civilization.

Any questions?

Sounds like something from FF12: Revenant Wings, though the theory makes sense when one considers the fact that it would take centuries for Aang to bring back the airbenders by himself...especially if he marries another bender.

Sounds interesting, but...I don't think that the Air Nomads were the type to abandon the world and leave it to be essentially enslaved, especially not when they are somewhere where they presumably will be able to watch it happen for a hundred years.

The Air Nomads are very peaceful and while that may make them oppose going to war, I think if Yang-Chen is any indication, they would set that aside in favor of peace and keeping the world in balance.

The only way I might sort of see it happening, is that the Southern Air temple, the first to be attacked, (right?) was ransacked and everyone there murdered(thus all the blatant evidence of their demise, and the other temples heard news and became fearful. Which, even considering what I said previously, does happen with humans.

Even so, sitting up there for a century and doing little to help doesn't seem like it'd be in character.

Buuut, it would make for a pretty epic element of surprise in the war if they swooped down to help Aang in time, since everyone believes them to be dead and no one would suspect a thing...

Perhaps it would be better to state then Sheba-san, that they left before any sign of war and simply saw no reason to go back.

In my mind, the fight begins over many issues that plague us today. the Celebacy issue -Aang's going to need to hang up his habit if he wants to marry and more more arrowheads- outdated customs, even diet.

Religious arguments are indeed the very reason many countries exist. Argument within ranks, riots, we can look in history of our world and see quite clearly that new nations are not set up overnight. I wonder if perhaps I made America into Lemuria...

Or there was a plague or something of the sort that prevented them from going back carried up by an import, thus inducing fear. That one is less complicated and more 'fun'.

Another thing to consider though is that Airbenders always have airbender babies. So, if Aang were to...have 'fun' with a non-bender, they'd produce and airbender. Same would most likely happen if he 'had fun' with another bender. That could cause some marital issues...

When you think about that, other airbenders are really needed. This is especially the case when...Adam and Eve doesn't work.

It's not really true that benders are the only way benders are made. I mean, if you look at Marvel, mutant babies don't always come from mutant parents, just look at Greydon Creed. Just a normal human -unless being a total buttface is a power- who's parents were friggin Mystique and Sabretooth. Not to mention, Katara's perents weren't benders, yet she is.

I disagree with your theory that only airbenders can make airbenders too Iija. In one of the episodes the kids talk about how bending was actually learned from watching something else. So really, if someone paid attention to Appa or another flying creature, it is theoretcically possible for them to become Airbenders.

Holy monkeys, can you imagine the airbenders Momo would create? *shudder*

Actually, you're wrong in the case of the airbenders, because according to the creators themselves, airbenders, unlike all other benders who can be born to anyone, only give birth to other airbenders. Something about Airbenders having such high spirituality or something, I didn't really pay attention to the reason, I was to busy going 'WTF? REALLY?!?'

At first I thought the same thing as you did, but the creators have spoken on the matter.

Then obviously the creators are completely ignoring genetics.

And thats really dumb that only airbenders can be spiritual. How can someone say "I'm more spiritual than you"? It's just dumb. again with genetics, You can't be born spiritual just like you can't be born with tattoos and Piercings. It's something you learn.

I'd like to know where you heard this from so I can yell at them properly if you don't mind supplying a link.
