Okay, I am going to attract a lot of flames for saying this, but I might as well get it out now.
I have problems with any self-appointed despot, especially the messainic kind. Lenin firmly falls into that category.
However, I am curious to judge the views of the rest of this forum, owing of course to the fact that it is not just a Communist one.

I praise Lenin for his bravery, and feel he was a just leader

Lenin never became leader of Russia, he just led the Russian Revolution. He never oppressed his people, he never wronged them, he himself was in the front during the storm of the Kremlin. Stalin, however, was miles and miles away that night eating dinner and telling jokes with friends. He would look at how many people were going to the gas chambers and he would just casually add something like "Add 3,000 more"

Correct me if wrong.

Lenin, from what I read, was only a chairman at one point. The government, at that point, was semi-democratic anyway, so he couldn't really be a despot (he and the bolsheviks did actually lose a VOTE to the mensheviks).

Stalin, in my opinion, was nothing but a fascist dictator, that slaughtered and oppressed millions. However, he was very good for the Russian economy and industry, so you have to give him that.

Actually I believe Stalin participated in the Revolution, he won a battle at a small town which he renamed Stalingrad in honor of his Victory, it was this battle that gave Stalin his Confidence in his Military skills, ironically it was at the same place did he finally learn he wan't a brilliant military leader and let Marshal Zhukov Command the Stalingrad Encirclment

Stalin didn't kill his people needlessly, he sent them to labour camps to get all the work out of them and only killed if they tried to run away

heh Lenin was ok and I think of him as a hero but when it comes to communism wise, he wasn't what you would concider the "best follower" of marx. Since he did make the whole, you have to be in the party to vote which was doomed to failure. BUT besides that, he was a leader and a great man ^_^ i meen we all make mistakes! ^_^

Okay, quick question, how do you explain the Cheka, its actions, and how Lenin encouraged them?

The Cheka style of secret police is not something I support. However, in a time when things are touchy, and many people still believe in a Tsar ruling Russia, you need to get hold of that grain they are witholding from the wider population somehow. And if a secret police is the only way to do it.....bene.

If the death of a few people will stop the death of many through starvation.....then it has to be done, however terrible it sounds.

Well Lenin ordered the executions of a lot of people. True. But there was war. As the chairman he is responsible for what his troops do. Just as Washington and Lincoln are responsible for thousands of dead civilians. I don't really get your point to say the truth. What kind of political leader is the one you prefer? Name some. As for Stalin, he was much more active in the Russian Revolution in terms of direct action than Lenin. The was a bomber and bankrobber who carried out a lot of missions. But what does that say about the person? Does that change him?

Yeah cuz in the same sense you could call Abraham Lincoln a tyrant because he caused the most deaths of Americans in the entire history of wars...

Stalin exiled Trotsky to Siberia, where he fled to Mexico to protest Stalin's dictatorship OF the people, and was later mysteriously assassinated... Sounds pretty needless to me. Communism is about crushing opposing ideology, and it most certainly wasn't about killing other communist (menshevik or otherwise) for holding different beliefs.

Lenin was one of the first to invade the Winter Palace, while Stalin was eating with friends miles away... Lenin sounded pretty active to me, but he was more of a political dude, whereas Stalin was definitely more of a military pinko.
