Since the debate on who borrowed what from who is a hot topic in certain threads in the international music forum, I'd like to add as our first real topic in our serious section of our guild a thread dedicated to the discussion of the influences that are expressed in the artists that we have listened to.

This is debate, so I hope that we'll be able to state our opinions without it devolving into a flame war. By expressing many sides of the arguement at hand, we'll surely discover more about the artists that we like/dislike and understand more fully the reasons why we think that way.

To start this thread, why don't we continue the debate-turned-flame war from the forum's Moi dix Mois thread and discuss the presence of classical composers in mana's work and our opinions on how that should have been handled. Should thanks be given in the liner notes, or since there is no copyright issues involved, was the manner in which it was handled satisfactory?

If there are no biters on this, please feel free to discuss who caused what movements in the modern Japanese music industry, etc. I'm making this topic broad so we have a range of options to discuss.

Just speaking of copywrite issues for a second, I honestly think Elton John should sue Mana for his use of "Funeral for a Friend" as "Shiroi Hada ni Kuruu, Ai to Kanashimi no Rondo."

Now moving on, I personally consider it a matter of ethics and good taste to even just give them special thanks in the liner notes. Not out of name dropping, but common courtesy. I MEAN IT'S NOT LIKE ANYBODY REALLY READS THOSE ANYWAY, LAWLZ.

In other news, hay IKN., did you know that that orange range flash has been taken down? Hopefully it's just bandwith...D:

Regarding the Orange Range flash, I've got a copy of that lovely thing saved for the cause. If it doesn't come back up again soon, we might have to rehost with credit to the creators. It's really amazing the sheer number of artists they've stolen from to make such a mediocre quilt of stolen music. gonk

We should be self-righteous children and let Elton John discover what is being done with his music on the other side of the planet. surprised It irks me that they take without credit.... neutral

Yeah, I've also got it saved. It's just harder to pimp to everyone without hosting. : <

I'm hoping to someday buy the shiroi single and mail it to Elton John (or by the time I get around to doing so, his estate XD).

We just have to find a sympathizer to the cause in Tokyo or Osaka that hits up the used VK cd shops in the area. I can't imagine that'd cost all that much to find it, and the fall out could be impressive. biggrin

O, the happy things that populate our collective dreamland!

(Re: bandwidth, our site's pretty dead outside the radio.blog isn't it? We really should get about revamping it, but we're all so distracted. gonk )

For seriously. I'm starting school again on Monday...but...AT LEAST I'VE BEEN DOING SOMETHING. lol

And yes, my imagination is running wild with thoughts of what happiness such a lawsuit would create. Which leads me to wonder, how is it that bands like these haven't gotten sued in the past? Especially Orange Range. They should be lucky to keep their heads above water, but somehow they're completely unscathed? Is the Japanese record industry just that lackadasical about plagarism, or are people just not paying attention?

Or, in the case of Orange Range, the labels have enough money to keep the issues under wraps and out of media attention. Paranoid about the world I may be, but this doesn't seem to be one of those mass cover-ups I fear. Running out into the land of speculation, I'd say it's probably safer to assume that they're judging the abuse of other's copyrighted works in the same manner that most of the fanbase sees it: influence, not infringement. I guess on the behalf of Orange Range, it was a smart move of theirs to put Kirikirimai on the Fantastic Four soundtrack, if only because the artist they were imitating was Japanese and not American.

Though honestly, if the rest of it were brought to the attention of the artists on this side of the ocean, I have a feeling that there would be some retaliation.

I'm curious to see what's written in Orange Range's liner notes....since, y'know, I'm not too keen on dropping cash on a band that doesn't amuse me in any way. Perhaps someone in this guild has copies that they're willing to scan for us? (Unlikely hope, I know.)

Back in the days when God ruled over earth with his legions of Dinonauts, music wasn't freely distrubuted through the magical Intarweb. Satan Records held a demon's share of the music market and stole the joy of listening to music by demanding payment. In the beginning, one's first born child as sacrifice was enough to appease his appetite but as the industry swelled, he needed something more useful: money.

Before the magical Intarweb, we lived in constant oppression, didn't we?
