Shaolin kung fu is a generic term covering multiple styles of martial arts taught at the traditional Shaolin Buddhist temples. Legend has it that the basics of these martial arts were brought to the temple millennium ago by Bodhidharma, who saw that the monks living in the temples were falling prey to bandits and corrupt government officials. He taught them the fundamentals of meditation and physical exercise, which they then expanded upon.
The traditional art of Shaolin is Five Animals Kung Fu, also known as Hung Gar. The different temples train different varieties of the five animals, but the core set that is acknowledged by all styles are Crane, Snake, Tiger, Leopard, and Dragon. Also taught are the Monkey, Mantis, Long Fist, Short Fist, Scorpion, Eagle, and Five Families styles, and a wildly varying and exotic set of weapons from the simple waxwood staff to the complex mechanical flying guillotine.
Traditionally, only Chinese people were permitted to study at the Shaolin temples. This changed with the advent of Communism in China when Kung Fu, which had been suppressed by prior governments was revived and revitalized as part of China's historical revolution. For the first time, outsiders were permitted to study at the temple, much to the objection of the oldest of traditional masters who resented the government's butting in to religious affairs. In the modern day, any person who is willing to pay can study at the Shaolin temple and learn the basics, though the masters will only teach advanced techniques to proven students.

Consider this you're first and last warning ... you risk banishment from this guild ... another post like the above ... and I will go to Sacred (though I could easily do it myself) ... and we will discuss your fate ... That being said ... play nice ...

Let us all calm down. I meant no offense in supplementing the history of the fine martial arts of the Shaolin temple, nor was I attempting to steal anyone's thunder. Indeed, I am happy that someone created this topic, even if it did not necessarily meet the initial guidelines of how these martial style topics are supposed to be posted. You are quite right, I have never studied any of the Shaolin martial arts except for a three-month study on Shaolin Northern Long Fist. However, I do believe in extensive research into all martial arts including their history, and the summary that I posted was no cut-and-paste from Wikipedia either.
So I apologize, Sayian, for stealing your thunder, and I thank you for opening this topic, even though it had a rough beginning.
