My manuscript has a significant number of phone calls, walkie-talkie conversations, and other kinds of exchanges where both of the speakers are not face to face. Throughout it so far I've used a system of formatting the 'offscreen' speaker's words in bold without speech or quotation marks, but since I'm quite far into the story by now, I want to format it correctly.
Does anyone know how this should be done?

I know of no reason for it not to be formatted like a normal conversation. Whether an inch or a football field away, speakers get quotation marks when speaking. Same with megaphones, and by extension, phone calls; speech is speech, no matter the medium.
