Sponge Cola is a Filipino band comprised of Ysmael "Yael" Yuzon (lead vocals and guitar), Christopher "Chris" Cantada (vocals and drums), Erwin "Armo" Armovit (lead guitar) and Reynaldo "Gosh" Dilay (bass), all hailing from the Ateneo de Manila University.
Formation:
During High School of the years 1998-2002, Yael met Gosh through the school's theater guild, Teatro Baguntao. Yael was already known then as a solo performer (kaya pala hayup sa PR tong si Yael), but decided anyway to form a band with Gosh and two other co-actors. The group, then called "Sponge" after R.S. Surtee's Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour, won in several high school competitions which began the buzz not just in their school but other campuses as well.
Behind the name "Sponge Cola":
Some of the members of the old lineup left and were replaced by Chris and Armo, the guitarist of Sponge's brother band Rampqueen. Raymond Fabul another batchmate, began to manage both Sponge and Rampqueen. However, they found out that a Detroit grunge band had already claimed the name Sponge. "But we wanted to keep the word Sponge in our band name because people have already associated us with that name," Yael said. "So we decided to add 'Cola', since it's an easy enough word to remember." Sponge Cola, was officially born in summer 2002.
Publicity:
They came up with a self-titled EP in the last quarter of 2003 containing five original songs: "Lunes," "A Tear," "Saturn," "Cigarette" and "Jeepney." The two songs penned in the vernacular were what made the band catch the public's attention. "Lunes," written by Gosh, begins with a catchy bossa nova-esque beat that suddenly shifts to a heavy rock riff, a nuance in arrangement which surprisingly served the song superbly. Second single "Jeepney" was written by a classmate for a school project back in 2001 and is a reminiscent piece on young love during simpler, happier times. The song showcases Yael's vocal range; that is, his uncanny ability to shift from mellow to screamo.
Through this EP, Sponge Cola was able to get extensive airplay from several local pop and rock radio stations, which helped broaden their fan base across the nation. A bootlegged copy of their version of Madonna's "Crazy For You" even ended up on the Internet and became so big an underground hit, some listeners believed it was a Sponge Cola original. Though this misconception has been instrumental in increasing Sponge Cola's popularity, the band has since aimed to transcend the stigma of being a cover band. They pushed their original songs to the forefront, and public response to the band became better than ever; the magic had already begun.
Debut Release:
Sony Music Philippines managed to sign the boys for record distribution and now release Sponge Cola's full-length debut album, entitled Palabas, thus dubbed in allusion to the band members' theater backgrounds. The album features a definitive voice in unadulterated rock, reminiscent of 90s Alternative but mixed with enough sing-along pop sensibility-as based on the band members' individual influences.
Popularity:
During 2004, their songs "Lunes" and "KLSP" gained popularity and ended up in most radio stations' charts during that period. Also, "Jeepney" became popular in the beginning of 2005 along with their own version of "Crazy For You". With the uprising of Filipino Rock in the middle of 2005, Sponge Cola gained even more popularity from listeners with their song "Gemini" and especially the emo-alternative rock song "Una".

oo! maliit talaga si yael! hehe kilala ko yan eh! langya, andun ba naman ako sa bahay nila, tas bumaba na naka-underwear lang! hehe kapatid kasi sya ng classmate ko at student ng mom ko sa ateneo. well, kahit na ganon, ayoko ng sponge. hehe
pero di ko sinasabi kay yael. haha alam lang ng kapatid nya.. 3nodding

bembrown ok naman ang format. pero share ko lang... anliit pala ng yael na yan! gulat ako! kala ko kahit paano, hindi siya vertically challenged... kaloko talaga pictures... sana ako mag-mukhang guwapo naman... lol liit nga! amputi pa, amf... hyriz, why dnt u lyk dem? curious lng... nakita ko xa! hinalikan ko pa!!! sweatdrop tpos... uh... lumabas kaagad ako sa dressing rum nila... xd eto yung palaging kinukwento ko, noh kuya bem? xd

oo nga, kung alam nyo lang kung ilang beses ko na narinig yung kuwentong yan ni kimitots... stare jowk! lol
ako, sa totoo lang, di ko rin gusto spongecola. pati na hale.
pero not enough to diss them like the way i diss cueshe. kahit paano mas matino naman yung dalawang ibang banda na yun kesa sa kanila.

bembrown oo nga, kung alam nyo lang kung ilang beses ko na narinig yung kuwentong yan ni kimitots... stare jowk! lol ako, sa totoo lang, di ko rin gusto spongecola. pati na hale. pero not enough to diss them like the way i diss cueshe. kahit paano mas matino naman yung dalawang ibang banda na yun kesa sa kanila. uu, paborit story ko yan eh! xd
right.... hale and sponge cola are amateurs, i agree... but i like their lyrics... poetic... give them time anyway... bago pa lang cla eh... 1 or 2 years, who knows?

ewan! haha wirdo ko ba dahil 'di ko sila gusto? pakiramdam ko kasi ang pogi rock nila eh. hehe ewan! basta di ko lang type. hehe nakita ko pa si Yael kanina (jan 29) sa ABS suot yung tigger kong shirt! argh! di na nabalik saken yon! hehe buti pa yung shirt ko, sikat na. hehe blaugh
mas gusto ko si Yani kesa sa kanya! haha
