User Name: mitsukochan33
Teacher name: Ember Brocksby
House: Gryffindor
Year: Divination Professor
Age: 25
Description: User Image
Blood: Pureblood
Wand: 11 and 3/4 inches, rosewood, dragon heartstring

History: Born in Manchester, England to a pureblood family, Ember has not had a life filled with struggle and strife. Her mother and father are both the Heads of two departments at the Ministry of Magic, so they live in a very comfortable, well-furnished home. Ember has never suffered from hunger or cold, and anything she ever wanted she received. Ironically enough, she was not a spoiled brat. She was fully aware that she had it made compared to her friends at school, but she never let that get to her head, much less the fact that she had magical powers. She found it cool that she could perform magic, but it never crossed her mind to allow that to swell up her ego and make her feel superior to her classmates.

At the age of 11, Ember received her letter of admissions to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was ecstatic to finally begin her magical education, although she was sad and scared to be away from her parents for so long. They reassured her that all would be well and cheered her up with the fact that her younger sister, Emma, would be joining her at Hogwarts the following year. And so, Ember departed for Hogwarts excitedly, wondering which House she would be sorted into and hoping to make friends once she was sorted.

To her joy, Ember was sorted into Gryffindor House. She quickly found that Gryffindor was her home and made friends left and right. As a result, she had boatloads of fun throughout her seven years at Hogwarts and was deeply saddened to be graduating when the end of her seventh year rolled around. She headed off to the Ministry academy that trained and educated future educators after graduation and immediately saw that teaching was her life's passion. She dreamed heavily of returning to Hogwarts to teach, but upon graduating from the Education Academy, there were no open positions at Hogwarts, so she ended up moving to France to teach at Beauxbatons.

During her second teaching year at Beauxbatons, Ember received the worst news of her life; her younger sister, Emma, had been tortured and murdered by a band of rogue wizards. She rushed home to attend her sister's funeral and be with her family during that difficult time. She returned to Beauxbatons within a week, but at the end of the Fall term, she quit her job there and returned home to England for good. Her father had told her that her mother was not doing very well since the tragic loss of her second daughter, so Ember stayed home with her mother to take care of her and help her overcome her great loss.

While at home, Ember came across an ad in the Daily Prophet that stated that Hogwarts was looking for a new Divination professor. Ember rushed to apply for the job and was ecstatic when she was hired on the spot. Divination had been her favorite subject at school, so she was thrilled to be able to teach it. A few days later, she was contacted by Hogwarts and asked if she wouldn't mind taking over as Head of Gryffindor House along with teaching Divination; they explained that the current Head was feeling too much pressure juggling the job with teaching his class, so they needed to find a replacement. Ember jumped at the opportunity to oversee her old House, and for the first time since her sister died, she was able to smile freely again. Her attitude infected her mother over the summer, and she was very happy to see her mother also smiling again and looking much more alive than she had been in about 7 months. Ember had much to be happy about: her mother was getting better, her father was finally happy again, as a result, she was alive, and she was finally going to achieve her dream of teaching at Hogwarts.

Personality: Ember is a happy-go-lucky free spirit. She rarely lets anything bring her down and is usually found with a smile. Her bouncy nature sometimes irks others, since they can't understand how she can always be so energetic and upbeat, but she just lets their comments and opinions roll off her back and keeps on doing whatever it is she was doing before their opinions.

Pet: None

Position: Divination professor

Other: Ember is originally a blonde, but she decided to die her hair red and black to reflect her name and also because red and black are her two favorite colors.

Behavior

In my class, I will expect you to treat me with the utmost respect and keep the rowdiness and silliness out of my classroom; there is a time and place for horseplay, but class is not one of them. Along with treating me with respect, I expect you to respect your fellow classmates as well. Remember the golden rule and live by it; it is the best way to ensure that you will not violate my rules or offend anyone else.

Homework and Tests

My class is a fairly simple class in the sense that there is not a lot of homework involved. I will give one or two essays per week, usually on a Friday so you can reflect on what you learned during the week and reinforce the material much better. I will also hand out 10-question quizzes every Friday to assess your knowledge of the material thus far. There will be three tests during each term, along with a final examination at the end of each term. I expect all assignments to be turned in on time; late assignments will be deducted 20 points for each day that they are late.

Tutoring

It will be difficult to teach you how to use your Inner Eye to properly See into crystal balls, but I will be more than happy to teach you how to read tea leaves and such if you are having much difficulty with some topics. Simply come by during my free periods and I will be glad to assist you.

Absences and Tardies

My policy for absences is quite simple: I accept no absences unless you have a written note from a professor, parent, or the matron in the Hospital Wing. All other absences will be assumed as cutting and will be awarded an automatic week-long detention and 10-point deduction from you respective House. As for tardies, I will deduct 5 points from your House for every minute that you are late. If you are more than 5 minutes late, you will receive an automatic week-long detention. The assignments and lectures missed during any absence or tardy will have to be obtained from other students. If a test is missed, you will receive an automatic T for it, unless a note is provided explaining the absence.

Detention

As stated in the previous section, detentions will be awarded to any unexcused absence or tardy, or any excessive tardy (exceeds 5 minutes in lateness). Detentions will also be given out if you disrespect me and/or one of your peers, fight in class, or otherwise show disregard for my rules and the classroom. I am a nice person, but I have no problem sticking a month-long punishment on you if you play around and act up in my classroom frequently.

~Kathryn J. Yelsah~

Kathryn entered the Divination room with about 5 boys surrounding her. All 6 of them were laughing as the boys tried to show off for her. She was thoroughly enjoying the limelight, and class was the farthest thing from her mind. She didn't notice the new Professor standing at the front of the room, but continued to chatter with the boys. They had all quickly changed their schedules so that they could be with Kathryn, and now they weren't just Hufflepuff boys. Some of the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw boys had seen her the night before as well, and at the first possible instant they went up to her. Everyone was shocked that this was once the shy little Kathryn Anderson that hadn't been able to speak in class without stuttering. Now however she was flaunting like a peacock, and enjoying every moment of it. Her father had pulled her aside last night to warn her to be careful, but she had just shook her head and ignored him. What was there to be careful of? So long as she behaved herself she didn't see anything wrong with flirting with these boys. She was 14 afterall. Surely she was allowed to experiment a little and figure out which boys were worth her time and which weren't.

Ember Brocksby

Ember took several deep breaths as she stood in front of her desk at the head of the class. Alright, this is it, she thought to herself, trying to talk away the nerves. Your first day teaching class at Hogwarts...and being Head of your old House. Keep it together, Ember. The students won't respect you if you run out of here screaming in terror. She laughed once to herself at her own joke, but she knew that it was definitely an option to just run away from the nerves. Why was she even nervous? It's not like she had never taught before. She had taught brilliantly at Beauxbatons; why shouldn't it be the same here? She figured her overly active nerves were due to the fact that she had finally landed her dream job (and then some) and was hoping really, really hard not to do anything to screw it up on the very first day of teaching. Now to keep her cool in front of the students...

Ember heard laughter and loud chatter from the stairs that led up to her classroom, and her stomach did a flip of anticipation as she realized that the first students were about to walk into the classroom. The door opened, and a girl walked in, surrounded by 5 boys. Well this girl certainly was popular with the guys. She could see why, though; the girl was blossoming beautifully. Ember said nothing to their volume of conversation, choosing not to say anything until the bell rang for class to start. She took a few more deep breaths and took her remaining presence in the classroom as a good sign that she would be able to make it through her first class. She wouldn't shout victory until the class ended, though; she didn't want to jinx her luck.

Kayleigh Ackerman

Kayleigh walked into Divination right behind Kathryn Yelsah and her male entourage. Kayleigh had always liked the girl--despite her constant crying fits and timidness--and always talked to her whenever she could, but Kathryn was starting to wear on her a bit with the annoying fact that all of the guys were fawning over her. During the other terms, they had never so much as looked at her, and now they all fought to impress her. Kayleigh had to admit that the girl really had gone through a huge change in her physical appearance over the summer (good-bye shy, little girl body, hello teenage-vixen-in-the-making), but she found it very hypocritical of everyone--male and female...especially male--to all of a sudden want to be Kathryn's best friend (and/or much more) when no one bothered to talk to her since her arrival at Hogwarts. Kayleigh rolled her eyes and sat at the front of the class, saying a polite, "Good morning, professor," to the new Divination professor, whose name she still was not quite familiar with. Kathryn and the guys guffawed loudly behind Kayleigh, causing her to roll her eyes once more; couldn't they keep their volume down in the presence of a freaking professor? Kayleigh knew that had this been Professor Yelsah's class, Kathryn wouldn't dare be so loud (and obnoxious) or allow herself to be surrounded by guys. When Professor Yelsah was able to see this current sight of his dear daughter, Kayleigh was sure Kathryn would end up quiet again for a very long time.

Kathryn heard the bell and tipped her head back once more, laughing at something one of the boys had said. Her blond hair danced in the sunlight as it bounced from her laughter. Then she looked at the boys and told them class was starting. Really she didn't want class to start, but she really didn't need to get into trouble. As soon as this woman in front of her realized she was the daughter of Johnathan Yelsah, she would inform him of whatever trouble Kathryn was causing, and Kathryn would get it good. It would be worse if boys were involved. Kathryn dug into her bag and quickly realized she had forgotten to pack an ink bottle for notes and such. Quickly tapping Kayliegh on the shoulder she smiled slightly embarrasses. "Kayliegh, I'm sorry to bother you, but do you have an ink bottle I can borrow? I'm such a scatter brain I forgot to pack one. I promise to pay you back." Kathryn really hoped that the girl would bail her out. She really didn't want to have to go through a day without ink. Next period was her fathers, and she couldn't share ink, and couldn't not use it. She wouldn't have time to run all the way to Hufflepuff tunnel to fetch it, or she'd be late. Kathryn would rather take the punishment for not having ink than for being late to her father's class on the first day of school.

Kayleigh turned to face Kathryn as she spoke to her and asked Kayleigh if she could borrow some ink for the day. Kayleigh felt like being mean--for once in her life--and just not letting Kathryn borrow some ink so she could learn her lesson and be responsible. Kayleigh knew that was unnecessarily spiteful, however, so she sighed internally while nodding at Kathryn and responding, "Sure thing." She fished her spare ink bottle out of her bag and handed it to Kathryn with a small, fleeting smile, then turned back to face the professor just as she began the lecture.

Ember Brocksby

Ember heard the bell ring and took a deep breath while closing her eyes in an effort to focus. She exhaled and opened her eyes, beaming at the class as she greeted, "Good morning everyone. I am Professor Brocksby, and I am the new Divination professor." Ember looked around the room, still smiling, and continued speaking. "Welcome to Divination, the study and art of predicting the future using everything from crystal balls to tea leaves. I will try my best to make this as fun a course as possible since most of the work will be hands-on; it's very difficult to predict the future using an essay, wouldn't you agree?" She paused and gazed around the room, hoping that she wasn't boring her students just yet. "Today, however, we will be doing something quite dull. I want you all to read the first chapter in your textbooks and write me a chapter summary on it. I know, it sounds like busy work, but the first chapter outlines pretty much all of what we will be doing in this course, so I want you to know what to expect before we do anything fun. In other words, I don't want you to go into this blindly. Now, the first chapter is pretty long since it briefly summarizes the ideas and procedures behind the methods we will be using in the class, so if you don't finish reading the chapter in class, feel free to finish it tonight and turn in your chapter summary first thing tomorrow morning, okay? Now if there are no questions, please turn to page 5 and begin reading. There will be no need to talk." Ember smiled at the class once more before turning and walking to sit at her desk, taking a deep breath to calm her nerves. She did it; she spoke to the class without vomiting or collapsing. She hated giving them such dull work to do on the first day, though. She really wanted to launch right into the fun stuff, but she had to make sure they all understood how everything worked and why things were done the way they were.

Kathryn smiled gratefully at Kayleigh when she lent her the bottle of ink. "Thank you." She muttered quietly since the teacher had started. Kathryn knew that Kayleigh didn't have to do this. She could just make Kathryn go without ink for the day since she was stupid enough not to pack it. She was really glad she had lent it to her though. It would make the day a lot simpler. Kathryn let these thoughts chase around in her mind as Professor Brocksby started talking. When they were told to read chapter 1 and summarize, Kathryn couldn't help the groan. Really? Read and summarize? Could it get any more boring? With a sigh Kathryn dug into her bag and heaved her book onto her desk as dramatically as she dared. It wasn't a heavy book, but Kathryn seriously didn't want to do this. Who in their right minds read and summarized text books? Oh wait, her father. Then again, she wasn't entirely convinced he was in his right mind. At least not all the time. More like most of the time. These thoughts made Kathryn smile, give a soft giggle, and shake her head to shut herself up again. Then she heard that chapter 1 was long and opened her book. Sure enough, it was 20 pages. Kathryn let out another groan and slammed her head onto her open textbook on her desk. "I should have taken Care of Magical Creatures." She muttered. She didn't entirely mean this, but right now she thought it would be a good switch. Course she wasn't taking into account she didn't like big animals with magic abilities, and the fact that Mary was in that class. Any time away from Mary was worth it.

Kathryn had lifted her head and flipped to the start of the chapter. She was digging in her bag for parchment when Professor Brocksby said they didn't need to talk. Her head snapped up in protest. "Just like my father." she muttered crossly yanking the parchment out of her bag violently. They couldn't even talk to each other quietly as they worked? What could they have done to piss her off so early? Why did she have to go punishing the entire class by making them read 20 pages and summarize silently. At the mention of it possibly being homework Kathryn had straitened in her desk again, but slammed her head on her text book once more. She knew she was being dramatic, and she prayed the woman didn't call her on it, but Kathryn seriously felt like throwing a tantrum right now. It was the first day back. They were going to get something similar from her father next period. Professor Travis was teaching Charms now, and by the look of the summer assignment, they would probably get something similar there as well. She also wouldn't put it past Blackburn to give them a bunch of homework. In fact, she could almost guarantee he would want the first chapter of the book read by.... TODAY. Kathryn slapped her hand to her forehead and muttered "Idiot." How could she have forgotten he usually wanted the first chapter read before they even got to class. Same went for her father, and Travis, and who knew what else? Oh why had Kathryn been so lazy over the summer? She had known that they were going to get hit hard the first day. Her father had warned her. He had drilled her every day to see what she had been studying. The last week of school they had gotten into an argument because Kathryn hadn't touched her new textbooks. He had been livid, and Kathryn had grabbed her Transfiguration book. She had made sure to read the first chapter of that, but then her father had cooled down, and the rest was forgotten. With that Kathryn started reading the chapter as fast as possible. There was no way Kathryn was going to sit in the common room all night doing homework. She had to finish as much as she could in class.

Ember Brocksby

Ember heard the blonde girl sitting next to the redhead mutter some comments a few times, so when the class was silently doing their assignment, Ember walked over to her and asked, "Is something wrong? You kept groaning and muttering stuff. What is your name, by the way?" Ember could learn names quickly, but that was once she heard them at least once. She had never heard the blonde's name, so all she could do was address her namelessly. All she knew about this girl was that she seemed to really hate Ember right now for giving them such a dull assignment to do on the very first day of class. Ember had heard every word the girl had muttered, so she wasn't feeling too warmly towards the girl either. She waited for the girl to respond to her two questions before saying anything else, however.

Kayleigh Ackerman

Kayleigh shook her head as Kathryn theatrically took her book out and muttered asides under breath after Professor Brocksby gave instructions for the day. Kayleigh had to agree that it was a very dull and hefty assignment for the first day, but she understood Professor Brocksby's reasoning behind it and knew that she would be very grateful for it once they really started using all of the knowledge that they would gather that day from that chapter. Couldn't Kathryn understand that, too? Kayleigh was surprised that she felt so negatively towards Kathryn all of a sudden when she had always been the girl's friend, but the girl's new attitude was really wearing on Kayleigh. When she saw Professor Brocksby walk towards Kathryn and ask her what was wrong and what her name was, Kayleigh knew that the professor had heard Kathryn's asides and was out for a bit of blood. Making sure to look as if she was concentrating hard on reading the chapter, Kayleigh listened as hard as she could to hear what Professor Brocksby would tell Kathryn.

Kathryn had started working quietly. It was just as boring as she had thought it was going to be, and it was tedious. She had finally shut up and accepted her feat however, and was on about the 4th page when she heard the Professor speak again, but this time she sounded as if she was addressing someone in particular, and she sounded extremely close. Swallowing as fear started to settle in, Kathryn slowly set her quill down and looked up at the Professor. She heard her ask if she was alright, and then ask her name. Her name? That couldn't be a good sign. She suddenly felt her mouth extremely dry, and incapable of speech. She took a moment and swallowed trying to get her mouth working again, the entire time looking up at the professor. It wasn't the normal terrified look Kathryn had worn her entire life previously, but you could tell she was more than slightly uncomfortable. More than most students in her position would be since Kathryn was still Kathryn. She was still easily intimidated by those bigger than her. Especially if they held a position of power. This woman before her was a Professor, Head of Gryffindor, and could talk to her father who had even more power. "H-hello. I-I'm f-fine." Kathryn stuttered. She heard a few snickers from those around her and her face paled even more. "I'm sorry about the complaining. I'm just lazy and stupid." It was said slowly and deliberately as Kathryn forced herself not to stutter. She figured that if she was completely honest, she would fare better than if she tried to beat around the bush and come up with some stupid excuse. She was also used to her father, and he got the cold hard truth like that out of her all the time. "My n-name i-is K-Kath-Kathryn." She finally had to blurt out the name she was stuttering so bad. "Kathryn Yelsah ma-am. I just scored detention didn't I?" It was said quietly and Kathryn lowered her head to her book once more. It wasn't going to be fun to explain this to her father.

Ember's eyebrows rose when she heard the blonde tell her that she was Kathryn Yelsah. So this was Jonathan Yelsah's daughter. Well Ember had not gotten a good first impression from the girl at all. "Much to your surprise, no you did not score a detention," Ember replied cooly. "However, you're more than welcome to withdraw from my class and enroll in Care of Magical Creatures if you don't think my class is interesting enough or worth your time. I know both professors would not mind having you in their class at all." Ember knew she was being slightly cruel to Kathryn, but she really had felt hurt when she heard the girl mutter about wanting to take Care of Magical Creatures instead of Ember's class. Ember felt so nervous about her class, and hearing that one of her new students would rather be somewhere else made her question her quality as a teacher. Maybe Kathryn hadn't meant it the way Ember had taken her comment, but she couldn't help but feel snubbed and inadequate.
