The mages’ wing in the castle of Athlenis. Filled with ordered vials, tomes, and on the rare occasion, a creature or two. Everything was scrupulous, people milled about, performing spells, enchantments, making new weapons and substances. Professionalism at its best, and something that King Alaric could boast about to his heart’s content.

Now, let me take you past all this, past the potions, and essences, and incense, and that little imp in that cage over there, and into the living quarters, which takes up one turret of our fair castle. Up here, rooms cordon off, all neat, all tidy, and all normal. Take the stairs to the very top, to a door. Open it.

Inside, you shall find – or at least it will be the first thing you will notice – paper. Scrolls littering the floor, in messy piles as if someone has tried to organise them, but mainly strewn about aimlessly. Try to read one. Even if you were able to read magical tongue, it would be a mean feat to decipher. Look past the paper to find a lot of charred marks, and behind that, a cobweb or two. A table in a corner is filled with potent substances, and a large bookshelf is haemorrhaging its contents onto the floor. The bed is unmade, not that you can see it under the rubble of magical paraphernalia, and the only clear space is a marginal area around the fireplace, where a large cauldron sits. There is a small plant upon the windowsill, which seems to be well cared for, surprisingly. Obviously the room’s owner has a soft spot for gardening.

This room belongs to the head mage of Athlenis.

Nephele, a woman, seemingly in her early twenties, was sat upon a pile of parchment. She ran a hand through messy forest green hair (she had been experimenting again), before standing. Her hair gave her an elfin appearance, and her face was fair, with a youthful, childlike quality to it, that made her eyes sparkle with an inner mischief. She wore a brown cloak, under which she wore a deep green robe, and upon her feet, sturdy brown boots, although they did not seem a stranger to scrapes and holes. Well, it wasn’t the worst thing she was accustomed to wearing, and indeed her co-workers must be quite thankful for her current ensemble (and indeed, her current form).

She made her way out of the door, plodding almost childishly down the stairs, exiting the turret and finding herself in the main research chambers. She sighed heavily, placing her hands upon her hips, and muttering one small word to the group.

“Bored.”

The mages, quite used to their boss’s display of her current state, carried on their work as normal. The head mage began to plod among them, peering over a few cauldrons and vials like a curious child might do when finding out what someone is doing. On a few occasional moments, the woman placed her finger into a few concoctions, sniffing (and even on occasion, tasting) what was being made. “Needs more cottonwart”, or, “cast an ice spell on it” would be the reply, before Nephele would move on, still muttering the same one syllable word.

“Bored.”

It was clear to see that Nephele Jocasta Aurelius wasn’t exactly normal. But, it was also clear to see that this strange individual was remarkably…

“Bored.”

Welcome to the Kingdom of Athlenis. Not that this should be a welcome to you, as seemingly, you must have lived in the Kingdom for most of your life to be given the job bestowed upon you, or at least be of considerable talent.

Your job? You are a newly appointed apprentice of the Mages’ Wing of Athlenis. Renowned throughout the lands as a seat of innovation and learning, the Mages’ Wing is responsible for quite a lot of the new cutting edge medicines, weapons, and technology we see around the Kingdom today. If it has magic, then you can be sure that the Athlenis mages had something to do with it.

As such, this sounds like quite a prestigious place to be employed. Not only does the King’s treasury pay you a large sum each month, but also you are quite comfortably bedded in the wing itself. Therefore, why are you, of all people, chosen to join its ranks?

That’s because of your boss. Nephele Aurelius is a mysterious woman, with very many unknowns to her. And if she wants you, then she shall have you, e you of great skill, or none at all in the sorcerer’s arts.

Perhaps you shall learn of her secrets? Perhaps you shall fail? Perhaps you shall die at the hands of a volatile cauldron? Perhaps you will find your home in other parts of the castle, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the coveted princess, stolen away from the world by a silvery veil until her wedding day.

That said, it seems there is much in the castle of Athlenis to discover. When can you start?

---

This role play, although set in a normal castle setting, is a bit different to regular role plays of its nature. Throught the course of the story, small events shall happen, sent by me to the heads of each of the aspects of the castle, for them to initiate in the role play. For example, the guards may have a tournament, and the royalty may have to entertain a particular foreign guest. Therefore, please remember that if you take a leading slot, activity will be needed from you.

Username: beckithewatermage
Name: Nephele Jocasta Aurelius
Age: It is truly unknown. Nephele always says it is rude to ask a woman her age, although it has been forgotten how long she has been around.
Race: Yet again, this appears an enigma. Due to her certain, shall we say, eccentricities, any particular race, or indeed what race she may have originally been, appears a mystery.
Kingdom: Where she originally comes from is unknown, but it is known she has been a citizen of Athlenis for a long time.
Position: Head Mage
Power: Nephele is a jack of all trades. Who knows what she is truly capable of?
Personality: Like herself, Nephele’s personality seems subject to change. Often she can appear quite upbeat, eccentric, and childish, at other times, she may not even emerge from her room, and will go into a complete state of melancholy.

Her moods can be unpredictable; not even the eldest mages in the wing have learned how to predict them. The only thing they have figured out is that if her hair is burgundy, she may be prone to a bout of depression. And throwing things.
History: Nephele is a constant in castle life, although her true story appears unknown. It is said that she arrived one day, out of the blue, and has been the head mage ever since.

It is clear that the woman possesses considerable skill in the magic art, although how much is not known. Some say that her power must have changed in some way, for she certainly does not appear to be human, or possess many key human traits. Whether the power inside her is good, or maligned to evil purpose, none can tell.

However, none really do know. Although talkative, and rather nosy to boot, Nephele appears to play her past and her true self quite close to her chest. No one has ever unravelled her mystery, or at least not yet.
Appearance: This appears prone to fluctuation, ranging from a small child to even an old woman with bright orange hair. Her wardrobe is quite as fluctuating, and malfunctional.
Other: Prone to gardening and cats.

Username: MercenaryGrax
Name: Jural Keni Kurosagi
Age: 33
Race: Human
Kingdom: Athlenis
Position: Princess' Personal Guard
Personality: Jural is a fairly kind man due to how he was raised. He is respectful towards others and treats almost everyone kindly. However, he has one major fault that tends to get on the nerves of some people, namely the princess herself. This fault is simply the fact that he can overreact when somebody comes too close to the princess even if they happen to be a friend of hers.
History: Jural grew up in the castle with his mother and father. He has had a pretty good life and was well looked after by not only his parents, but by the servants as well. Jural was always so friendly with everybody and would often pretend he was fighting off demons and other such creatures with an imaginary sword so that he could 'protect' those he cared for. When his father noticed how enthusiastic Jural was about serving his kingdom, he began to train Jural in the ways of combat and swordfighting. This made Jural feel so proud and he eagerly studied under his father, picking up on everything at an alarming rate that shocked nearly everyone. Everyone that is except for his father who could see his potential from the very start.

During his teenage years, Jural was accepted into the castle guards and eagerly did his duties every single day without complaint. Upon reaching the age of 27, Jural was assigned to guard the Princess herself. This duty was one he had dreamed of ever since he learned that his father had been the king's personal guard for quite some time before his death. Proud to serve the royal family in an even better way, Jural eagerly protects the princess to this day. As he's watching over her, he is constantly reminded of his father and feels proud to be called his son each and every day.
Appearance: Jural Keni Kurosagi
Other: Jural wields two longswords that he has named Swift & Blaze. The reasons he gave them these names is unknown to most people. However, if you were to ask him, he would simply explain that they are specially enchanted blades and leave it at that.

Username: MercenaryGrax
Name: Nela Undi Salagi
Age: 15
Race: Elf
Kingdom: Kulika
Position: Apprentice
Personality: Nela's a kind young man. However, he doesn't talk much and he can be really shy around some people, especially those he doesn't know. Nela is very intelligent for his age, but because he rarely talks or tries to show off what he can do, this side of him is barely known.
History: Nela lost both his parents at the age of 6, but he was quickly adopted by two friends of his family. They were so sweet to him and helped him through the loss of his parents. As time went by, they taught Nela many things, but certain things he picked up on by himself. One thing that fascinated him most was the topic of magic. He kept to himself mostly so he could research that topic and study as much as he could. At times he would practice magic, but without proper guidance some spells went a little haywire.

After reaching the age of 14, Nela started to try and use what little magical talent he had to help the people he knew. Oftentimes things just wouldn't go as planned and he caused a number of accidents, resulting in things being thrown at him or him being assaulted for his mistakes. All he wanted was to learn more and more about magic, but the more he tried, the more he realized that without a proper teacher he would not be able to practice it as he wanted. When he was brought to this new kingdom, Nela was excited about all the magic he could see throughout the kingdom and quickly became intrigued about the masters behind such wizardry. He really looks up to the head wizard and wants to make her proud of him.
Appearance: Nela Undi Salagi
Other: Nela keeps a pet parakeet that he lets sit on his shoulder whenever it wants. For protection, Nela also keeps a small dagger attached to his hip by the belt.

Username: ox-Kirata-xo
Name: Antoinetta
Age: 31
Race: Elf
Kingdom: Athlenis
Position: Queen
Personality: Known as a warm queen, Antoinetta is just as the rumors proclaim. She is understanding and kind. She truly cares for the people of her country and will stand by them. Because Antoinetta was brought up with such strict rules she has a curious and rebellious side. She loves to try and see how far she can push the limits without having them snap. Also, she is known for having a stubborn personality, probably due to the fact she was brought up as a Queen and tends to like having things her way. In a sense she's like a cat, she can be warm and affectionate, curious and playful, yet when need be, she has claws, and she's not afraid to use them.
History: Antoinetta was born from the little elven kingdom Helious. Born as the only heir, she was brought up to be respectable and regal. From the moment she was born she was taught that she would be married off to a prince to strengthen her kingdom. So for the first 16 years of her life she has been instructed how to walk, talk, think, dance, sing, entertain, and act like a Queen. She also learned about military strategies, magic, and politics and social standings. She was well rounded in most everything a Queen needed to be, so when it came that she could no longer learn any more from the teachers in Helious she was sent off to Helious.

It was just after her 13th birthday that she met her husband. They married right away and she once more dived into lessons on the politics and things of the sort for her new role. Because Athlenis is a more human ran society there were a few things she still needed to learn. And then she had her first child right away, soon followed by a second. The fact she had two children so young is in fact common, being of elven lineage their bodies mature quite quickly, making her suitable for child birth at such a young age.
Appearance: Antoinetta
Other: She is often found twirling and dancing down the hallways humming, whistling or singing a tune. She also enjoys popping by the mage's wing because of her interest in magic.

Username: AqwaGaurdian
Name: Amara Dellos
Age: 26
Race: Human
Kingdom: formerly from Delfina, currently Athlenis
Position: Mage
Personality: Amara is one of those people who can say pretty much anything and explain it in a way to make you believed it. She’s a very charismatic being, though she’s far from being everyone’s best friend. She bases her entire perception of people from the first meeting, often deciding whether or not she likes them or not before they even speak. Loyal to a fault, once Amara is on your side nothing can make her leave or doubt you. But such high-quaily devotion is hard to earn, and so far very few people have been able to attain it.
When the situation become stressful, Amara often become blunt and sarcastic. She hates being put on the spot and will often throw some sort of insult, or worse a spell, at anyone who tried to. She almost never apologies for anything she dose, because she never dose anything she doesn’t believe in.
History: The second daughter to the king’s third concubine, there was nothing much in store for her back home at Delfina. A patriarchal society, there was no way for Amara to ever inherit the throne and she never had any desire for it. The only function in society that she had was to be shown off as one of the kingdom’s many jewels and perhaps to be married off to a prince of one of the lesser kingdoms. This was not the life she wanted and she made it known to her father, the king.

The man sighed and rubbed his forehead when his daughter spoke to him in his study, sending her off with the promise that he would think about it. Amara had always been one of his favorites of his many children, and he had intended to make sure she be married off into a rich family so that she could live happily ever after. But it appeared that he would have to find something else to make her happy. He pondered what to do for many weeks before deciding he would sent his thirteen year old daughter to Athlenis to become a mage.

Even at the early stages of life, the red headed child had always shown great potential for magic. The advisors themselves often told the king that he should educated the princess in the arts. They claimed that it was probably do to the foreign blood of her mother and the King had merely shrugged it off. After all, he had already planned out her life so there was no reason for her to be taught. But now, with the relations between Athlenis and Delfina being so good, he could sent her off to live the way she wanted without worrying about her well being. Amara agreed readily to the plan and was soon off to explore the world beyond the harem’s walls.

The moment that the princess meet Nephele, she decided that she liked her. As years went by and Amara went from apprentice to mage and she was content with her life. One day, after a rather interesting experiment by Nephele, she found herself laughing at the results while others fled for their lives. It was that day that Amara realized that she trusted the woman above all else, having faith that she wouldn’t do anything that would kill them all. Vowing to follow the woman till her last breath, Amara offered to help clean up even after the mage threw a chair at her. She really loves this life.
Appearance: Amara Dellos
Other: Unlike Nephele who seems to be able to do anything, Amara focuses on one area of magic. Even in the other kingdoms and in distant lands, she is considered to be one of the best when it comes to elemental magic. She even invented a technique that give the element a solid form and free will. But it was soon deemed to be dangerous and was hidden from the world. Amara is still allowed to use the technique but she is forbidden to teach anyone else about it without permission from the elders.

As he wandered through the streets of the city on his way to the castle, the young elf male couldn't help but smile and admire all the magic at use. "Levitation, various ice magic mixed in to create those ice sculptures, fire magic was used to create that..." Nela couldn't help himself as he commented on what he knew was used to make almost everything he saw. "Sadly, I can't do any of it just yet. Why was I called here? I'm just a nobody that keeps screwing up all my magic spells. Now here I am in the Kingdom of Magic, moving into the castle no less."

The young elf had been having thoughts like these since he first received the letter telling him that he had been invited to join the most amazing mages in the world. As he approached the castle steps, Nela's eyes wandered up the castle walls, taking in its grand design and all the beauty this castle offered. A long sigh escaped him before he stepped forward and presented his letter to the guards. "I have been invited to live in the castle and study as a Mage's Apprentice." Those were the only words he spoke as one of the guards snatched the letter from his hands and read it carefully, line by line.

After a moment, the young man's letter was returned to him and the gate was opened for him. Stepping through, Nela walked up to the castle's steps and closed his eyes. "Please, please don't let this be a dream." Opening his eyes again, he breathed a sigh of relief and approached the castle doors. Shoving them open, the young elf stepped inside and peered around. When the doors closed behind him, Nela jumped slightly and began to shiver. "I don't belong here. I really don't belong here." He muttered to himself as a lovely maid approached him.

"Hello there. May I be of service to you?" Upon hearing the woman's voice, Nela's face brightened considerably and he rubbed the back of his head nervously. "Y-Yes please. I've been invited to live in the castle and study as a Mage's apprentice. I'm not quite sure where I'm supposed to go." Nela handed her the letter for her to examine. Upon reading it, the maid turned and beckoned the elf to follow.

After some time, the maid finally stopped in front of a door and Nela looked around for a brief moment. "This is the Mages' Wing isn't it? I can tell." Nela grinned a bit as he entered his room and looked around. Inside there was a variety of magical tools and tomes lined on shelves. It looked like basic apprentice magecraft to Nela and he was happy for the chance to learn it all properly now. Turning, the elf bowed to the kind maid before he began to place his belongings where he felt they belonged. When he had finished, he lay himself down upon his bed and smiled as he closed his eyes. "I'm home."

Hazel eyes stared out of the window eagerly, although not much could be seen through the film of dirt and grime upon the pane, as she was not a very cleanly individual. However, the view was adequate enough to at least see vague figures down below and aside from the milling of guards and groundskeepers, all seemed rather normal today. But Nephele did not want it to be normal! She gave a slight squeal of childish impatience, beginning to tap her foot ever so slightly as she waited.

Today was the day her new apprentices arrived! She had been waiting for this for a long time, waiting for her hand picked individuals (well, not necessarily that hand-picked, she had written to random addresses), to arrive, make their way to the castle, and…

Become her new pets! No, that wasn’t right. Apprentices! That was the one.

Discontented with standing around and looking out of the window, the head mage began to move, skirting her way to the door with the agile skill of a dancer, for navigating the debris was no mean feat. She then began to prance down the hallway, before descending the stairs to the main mage dormitories. A door was knocked on here, a door there, as she continued her movement. If she was going to suffer with boredom, then her mages would do so with her.

“Wake up!” came the call as she continued onwards, “rise and shine! Wake up now and I shall cook us all breakfast!” A few screams of horror came from a few of the rooms at that, although she carried on unfazed. It was safe to say that Nephele was not exactly well versed in culinary expertise, and nearly all could recall the last time she tried to fry an egg.

Bounding her way down into the main research facility, she perched herself upon the side of a cauldron, swinging her feet idly, before checking her hair. It was still green today, and slightly messy, as usual. She liked green. It rather symbolised the day, fresh new shoots joining their department, to finally blossom. Or blow up. That hadn’t been a very good day on her part, especially when her fellow colleagues made her clean it up. Well, she supposed it had kind of been her fault…

Nephele began to hum to herself, waiting for the first unlucky few to join her.

Nela had been one of those who groaned at hearing the head mage calling out to him as she knocked on his door. However, his groan was not out of fear of her cooking. His groan was due to the fact that he had barely fallen asleep and already he had to wake up and head down to get some breakfast. "Ugh. It was such a long walk here. Couldn't I have been allowed to sleep just a while longer?" Nela complained as he dressed himself, gathered some of his magical supplies, and made his way out of his room, down to the main research facility.

Once there, he stared at a few other groggy mages that looked as if they were frightened of something or someone. Looking to where their gazes were set, Nela smiled as he recognized the person almost immediately, regardless of her appearance. "Master Nephele! I am so happy to meet you! I'll gladly share in any breakfast you make!" At hearing this, Nela noticed that nearly every mage in the room, including those just arriving, stared at him in disbelief. Looking around at each of them, the young elf frowned a bit and tilted his head slightly. "What's the matter? I've always wanted to meet the Master and if she's cooking then I'm very happy to accept. I know that whatever she makes will be wonderful! She is a genius after all!" Nela said in a matter-of-factly sort of tone.

Nela stepped closer to the Master Mage and bowed low to her. "I am so pleased to meet you Master. I hope that as your new apprentice that I will not let you down. Though I must ask something of you." Nela frowned slightly as he looked into her eyes. Bowing low, he took a deep breath to help himself build up the nerve to ask what he wanted. Letting it out slowly, Nela closed his eyes and smiled a bit. "Master, why did you pick me to be your new apprentice? I've screwed up every spell I've ever tried to cast! I can't make a decent potion, I keep blowing things up, I-I..."

Nela couldn't stop himself from dropping to his knees and bursting into tears, his face falling into his hands. "I thank you from the bottom of my heart Master Nephele! I've studied magic for so long, but without proper teaching I haven't been able to do anything right. Please, please teach me! I'll work as hard as you want me to and even harder than that! I won't let you down! I promise you with everything that I am that I will never let you down! And should anyone ever try to disrespect you or your name, I will stand up for you and prove to them that you are a true genius worthy of being called the best in the world!" Nela looked up at her again through his tears and smiled brightly. "Thank you Master."

Antoinetta

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars...?

Antoinetta woke late, she liked to sleep in whenever she could and the maids could never bring themselves to wake her. She stretched and gave a yawn. Looking to the spot on the bed beside her she noticed it was empty. Her husband must be up and running already. She pulled off the covers and stood, giving her legs a stretch too. A maid popped her head in after hearing the shuffling noises. Antoinetta turned to her and smiled, "Ah,right on time dear, could you draw me some fresh linen? Something flowy and loose for today." She asked, she felt like just relaxing today, nothing was supposed to happen asides from a few Mage apprentices coming. Antoinetta watched as the maid nodded and scurried off to one of the large dressers in the room to fetch the desired items.

Heading over to a table with a mirror she grabbed a hair brush and started to comb out her brown hair. Once she deemed it appropriate she added a few peal hair clips and pinned some up and some down. And by the time she finished that, the maid had came back with a simple, yet elegant sundress. The maid quickly helped Antoinette change and then bowed before running off to do another job.

Antoinette left her room to venture the halls, perhaps to get some breakfast, or perhaps to meet the new mages. She didn't know just yet.

Amara Dellis

For those who hadn refused to wake up when the Head Mage called out to them soon found themselves forced out of bed but minutes later when a large explosion shook the entire magic wing of the castle. A loud, feminine “I told you so!” Could be heard echoing down the corridors. Such sounds were not uncommon in the mage’s wing of the castle since many of the magic users liked to experiment. But it was almost a crime against nature to cause such a ruckus so early in the morning. The slackers all opened their doors to glare at the duo who were currently walking down the hall before slamming them shut.

“Okay okay okay…I give.” The male said as he brushed the soot off of his clothing. His was covered in the black stuff, but somehow his companion had managed to remain perfectly clean. The female next to him smirked and flipped her hair over her shoulder. “And?” She cooed at him. “…and you’re the master elementalist and I will never doubt you ever again.” The male said rolling his eyes, “Now will you get this stuff off me? I rather look clean when I die from food poisoning.” He muttered. Even from one of the workrooms they could hear every word that Nephele said.

Satisfied that her ego was successfully stroked, Amara waved a hand in his direction. A small hurricane formed around the male for a couple of moments before dispersing. Looking down at himself, he nodded and grunted his appreciation. Amara smiled at his before heading towards the main research facility. Once she got there, she was rather surprised to see an unfamiliar elf boy crying in front of the head mage. “Great…looks like they’re already one begging for mercy. Nephle what did you do to the poor boy?” She the first part had be muttered to her companion who chuckled before disappearing.
