A point of contention among the Atheist community, do we "target" all religious people or just the extremists, the Fundies, and the ******** honestly TRY to be nicer to the moderates I meet than the Fundies. I try to show more tact, more respect to their beliefs, and more patience. But believing in watered down bullshit is still believing in bullshit, and moderates provide cover for the extremists.
How do you guys feel?

I sorta agree, sorta disagree... I mean, I give ALOT of slack, seeing as I'm a gay guy in a Catholic house hold, went to a Catholic school, and have religous friends from several denominations... I don't hate anyone or even pity them that much, especially as my boyfriend is agnostic. I have no problem with it, I understand that it means something to them, and as long as they leave me alone I'm happy to do the same.
It's the people who shove it in my face that I have an issue with. Even sometimes "moderates" feel the sympathetic need to "educate" me about the condition of my soul. That gives me the shits, and I'll often start blasting them and their stupid litle religion... evil
But, on a whole, I try not to "target" anyone, and I think athiests should stay away from that attitude... I mean, there are athiest extremists who I'd love to put in a blender too, they're just as painful as the religous ones. I mean, we believe in nothing, generally, so why discriminate at all?
^.^ And who the ******** are the Fundies?

I'm sort of torn between either ignoring and tolerating them and desperately wanting to educate them. It's so hard though since, of course, if you ask them to read a certain book or something they'll just scream no because they don't want to read such "satanic jargon." rolleyes Honestly though I only had one friend who is actually a church going christian and has read the bible 6 times now and still believes. (how???) We're really good friends besides this fact so we just... don't talk about it. sweatdrop

I'm honestly not sure. I don't even know if she believes in some sort of evolution or if she completely takes genesis as fact. She's rather intelligent though (she read it the first time at age 8 and the bible is no easy picture book lol). From what I understand, she reads it for inspiration. She once told me that reading the bible is like having a conversation with god because, to her, it's his words that she is reading.

haha yeah, i know right. i think what they mostly did was take out all of the old time language and made it more grammatically understandable for kids. i opened it one once and read a random page and that's what it seemed like to me. It's all still the same slur of make believe.

It depends on the subject and what the "moderate" is saying. Generally, I let personal beliefs be personal since personal beliefs never harmed anything. My issue is moreso with organized religion rather than personal religious beliefs, and how people use organized religion to further their own beliefs. This having been said, I do not cut anyone slack simply because they claim to be "moderate" - my case in point is gothic_sweetheart, who here to try telling me that Theo van Gogh's murder was somehow justified and that "he should have known better". She has since made numerous claims that she does not condone the actions of the extremists...yet rather than recant her statement she is trying to defend it and decry Theo's criticism as false - funny enough, she has provided little evidence to back up her claims that Islam is not misogynistic in nature, which was the issue over which van Gogh got killed.

I say we should all respect everyone's belief. Our patience level should differ with the person. Those who attack us constantly should receive little to no patience. But everyone must understand that there is a difference between confused arguing, and attacking.

You know, the ones that go "Church is awesome!" and the topic is on about it but when you put in your input about church by saying you have never been inside one, someone has to go
"You don't need to just say your an Atheist man. That's not cool."
