Only folklore music I know from America are Camptown Races, Clementine, Do Your Ears Hang Low, Home on the Range, I've Been Working on the Railroad, Michael Row the Boat Ashore, My Bonnie, Row Row Row Your Boat, Shenendoah, Skip to My Lou, and Yankee Doodle.

Yeah, not very exciting folk music at all IMO.

With the exception of Shenendoah, they're all mostly songs that children in America learn as a young kid in elementary schools. xD

Mine here in Canada would be Nisga'a - Look up on youtube!

Ring around the Rosie! Song kids sing while playing sometimes - hold hands and walk/skip in a circle then fall down at the end.

Song from Britain from when the plague hit.

There are loads of other songs like that, some of which are a bit more creative, poignant and overall less childlike. We don't really have a culture that encourages the preservation of folk songs beyond childrens' songs.

A lot of American folk songs are of more recent origins - many are protest songs. There are also a lot that are either religious (think Gospel music) or influenced by religion ("Simple Gifts" comes to mind; it's an old Quaker song but not explicitly religious).
Country music definitely has some strong folk influences too.

There's another thing I've read about but never encountered - songs (especially nursery rhymes, lullabies, or other childrens' songs) that most people now think are gibberish, but are really derived from songs from other parts of the world, in other languages.

I saw a documentary once about an African-American family that was able to trace their origins back to a particular tribe in Africa based on such a song. They had no idea what the words meant, but it had been passed from one generation to the next since their ancestors had been brought over as slaves. That song allowed them to go back and visit with the tribe their family had originated with.

The African-American Family case was really interesting...I think they were really excited when they found their ancestors' tribe....
And about Children's song...There s a song that children sing here while they're playing and It's completely sounds gibberish But some say It has French or Polish roots...

I second the thought that America really doesn't support the idea of folk music. The only thing like that around here is some older people who play polka music (this area is mainly German ancestry with some Czech and Irish thrown in).

I did happen across this compilation in the local library though. The folk-songs are (supposedly) from Scandinavia.
LINK

I plan on buying it eventually. I really like Tuulet (The Winds) -by- Tellu the best.

wow sounds great...
I have never heard any songs from Scandinavia(Except Alexander Rybak - Fairytale which is actually a pop song...)
It sad that I can't buy 'em ...(You know Amazon or any other selling Sites doesn't have service in Iran Because of Sanctions and stuff)
