I know you don't use your own character, and you're forced to use preset armor and weapons.
But do you atleast get anything for playing?
Can you keep your carves? Get tokens or something, maybe?
Or is it purely for the sake of having local play?

If you are refering to the arena then you get coins from whichever monster you beat. For example, if you beat a Great Jaggi, you will get a G Jaggi coin which can be used in making armor or weapons.

Well, split-screen arena specifically, but yes.
That works, I guess.
Atleast I can work towards my Guild Armor that way.

Split-screen itself is arena exclusive only. You cannot go on Village quests or Town quests.
The carves you get are only Mega Pots sadly. But the reward for slaying the beasts are coins, like in MHFU.
You can also use "your" character, dependant on the situation.
If it's your Wii you can character select your own character. Whilst the other player has to have saved Wii character data on their Wii-mote.
Vice-versa dependant on who's Wii.
Use MonsterHunterWikia to see if Guild Armor requires coins to make. Otherwise it's just to learn and have fun.
