mine isn't really a request.i need tips on how to kill my first rathian.
You've probably already moved past this, but I'll type out what I know anyway.
Apart from charges and bites, Rathian has a few attacks that you need to watch out for:
She will perform a counter-clockwise tail-whip similar to the Qurupeco. This attack is always done twice, and with practice can be evaded at close range by rolling under the tail. There is also a safe spot right under the chest/neck area where a hammer or lance user can deal serious damage in a short amount of time.
She can perform a backwards somersault, lashing anything directly in front or behind her with a poison barb on her tail. She will hesitate and back up for a brief second before performing it. The best place to be in order to dodge the attack is to either side just about 1 roll distance away. This attack can still get you if you are too eager to get in a hit, as the tail swings under her after the initial spin. When raging, she can perform this attack twice in a row and even when in flight. There is only a split-second tell that shows that she is going for a second flip. Even with her tail-tip missing, this attack can still poison and still has 2 parts, although you'd have to be right under her to be hit by the stub.
Rathian is the first of 4 monsters in Tri that can grab you. To break free, rotate the left analog stick and press the attack buttons repeatedly. A purple pop-up bar will act as a progress bar. During this attack, if you cannot free yourself, she will bite you 3 times and then do a somersault attack, poisoning you and taking a sizable chunk of health, if not knocking you out cold. You can escape immediately easily by using a dung bomb while pinned or if your team causes her to stagger.
Rathian breaths fire, shooting fireballs in either a single aimed shot or a 3 shot spread. Staying inside near her chest/neck area and slightly off to either side will keep you safe from harm. When raging, she will focus a large fireball toward the ground directly in front of her, causing a sizable explosion. The best thing to do in this situation is to learn the attack's area of effect and stay out of it. An indirect hit can be blocked and, if close enough, the initial fireball can be blocked as well, preventing the explosion and leaving her open to counter attack.
