Besides the three forms of writing (kanji, hiragana, katakana), Japanese is sometimes written in Romaji. Romaji is primarily used for the convenience of foreigners. With Romaji, one can read Japanese without knowing any Japanese writing system. Although there are several systems of Romaji, the most widely used is a modified Hepburn system.

All three types of Japanese characters are designed to be written in vertical lines, from right to left, but they can be written horizontally as well. Years ago, almost all Japanese writing was vertical, but the horizontal style has slowly become more popular since it is easier to include Arabic numerals and passages from other foreign languages. However most newspapers still retain the vertical style.

Romaji is the easiest way for beginners to learn Japanese. Once you have gotten familiar with Japanese in Romaji, then you can begin to break up the syllables into Hiragana characters, and later Kanji.

Romaji can be found on your keyboard as I'm sure you know, as it is made up of our american letters. However, it does exclude some letters, such as "x", which you will notice over time.

Using Romaji as a beginner seems to be more detrimental to your learning than anything. Learning Hiragana isn't too difficult and can be done in around a week or so. The syllabary helps with pronunciation as well.

I have to agree with kay2kay. Learning Romaji is a crutch. It is best to go straight into learning hiragana and karakana. It is much better in the long run. That way once you have hiragana and katakana learned you can start on kanji which is SO important.
