In a town so small one secret could change everything, forever
The setting is a small American town down in south called Gatlin. The town is run by the older generations who do not welcome change. They are the mothers and grandmothers and the rule with an iron fist. I will give some background on the characters in the book just so you are slightly familiar with it, though they won't play a major role, this role play will have a story line all its own and be propelled forward by you rpers!
Here are some things you should know:
Lena Duchannes: She is sixteen and managed to avoid her "claiming" by blocking out the moon because of her powers. She moved to Gatlin to live with her Uncle Macon in Ravenwood Manor where he was to protect her. She'd moved around all her life and lived with her Gramma and never got to experience anything "normal." She wears a large chain necklace filled with different things like a po top, a thread from a sweater, and a button. All the things on her necklace are reminders of when she was happy. Her mother is named Sarafine, who is the most powerful Cataclycst. Lena has gone through a lot in Gatlin, from members of the DAR trying to get her kicked out of school after she broke a window, because of her powers, to managing to avoid her "claiming" where her mother showed up. She is dating Ethan, who, for some reason can communicate telepathically with her and they share a deep connection. Up until her sixteenth birthday, Lena had no idea who her mother or father was, then she learned her mother was Sarafine, the most powerful Dark Caster, and that Sarafine killed Lena's father.
Ethan Wate: Is a very smart sixteen year old boy. He loves sports and can't wait to get out of Gatlin. His best friend is named Link who is a drummer, though his band sucks. Ethan is six foot and the star of the basketball team. His mom died about a year ago, she got into an accident. His mother, Lila was a Civil War enthusiast and she and her best friend Marian published a lot of books on the Civil War and the war's weaponry. Ethan's father is also an author. After his mother's death, Ethan's father became a shut in, always in his study claiming to be working on a novel. Ethan would only see him for a few minutes in the morning, other than that his dad stayed in his study. Ethan started to have dreams in which he saw a beautiful black haired girl, and then on the first day of school, there she was; Lena. They are dating and Ethan will do anything to protect her. Sometimes, though, he doesn't know when to drop a subject and he often times does the opposite of what Lena asks him.
Amma: Amma is the authority in Ethan's house. She's raised him as her own since he was little. She's been working for the Wate family for many, many years. She is highly superstitious and often times plants little charms and voodoo dolls around the house for protection, she can also talk to the spirits of her ancestors, often times asking them for help and guidance. She is also a huge crossword fanatic and often times she spells out large, complicated words. She would do ANYTHING for Ethan and his father, yet she is extremely strict with Ethan. She knows all about the Casters and in fact, she and Macon are...working together, as much as she doesn't like it, she does it to protect her boy; Ethan.
Marian: She was Ethan's mother's best friend. She is the head librarian in Gatlin and Ethan always calls her Aunt Marian. She is a graduate of a highly esteemed university and is fifty times more intelligent than everyone in Gatlin, minus Macon Ravenwood and Ethan and his family. She also knows about the Casters for she is also the head librarian of the Lunae Libri, which is the Casters library and it holds all and any books dealing with Casters.
Macon Ravenwood: Is the town shut-in. He has gotten a bad rap all over town because he never leaves his huge plantation. He has a huge wolf-dog, which he actually uses to "spy" on everyone because Macon is an Incubus he cannot go out during the day. The dog's name is Boo Radley. Macon's real name is Melchizedek. Macon took in his niece Lena so that he could protect her from her mother. He kept a lot of secrets from her, but it was for her own good. Macon is always impeccably dressed and also as brilliant, if not more intelligent than Marian. Macon is very well refined and hates the people of Gatlin, they're all useless and dirty and single minded, but he is bound to Ravenwood Manor. However, Macon is no longer alive, he was taken in place of Ethan during Lena's claiming.
Ridely: Lena's cousin who is Dark, she is a Siren and almost killed Ethan once.
Aunt Del (A.K.A. Delphine): Ridley's mother, she is Light and a Palimpsest. She is confused all the time because of this, and she's also hurting because Ridley is Dark.
Reece: A Sybil, she hasn't been "claimed" yet and she is also Aunt Del's daughter.
Larkin: He is a Illusionist. He loves to creates Illusions of snakes, he is also something of a bad boy. He is always wearing a leather jacket and likes to change various parts of his body into snakes. Everyone just recently discovered he was dark, becuase of the illusion he was using. Son of Aunt Del also.
Barclay: He is Larkin, Reece, Ryan, and Ridley's father. He is a Shifter and he is Light.
Ryan: She is only ten years old and so they don't know what her powers are yet.
Lunae Libri: The Caster's library. It's only open on the holidays which the normal Gatlin County Library is closed. The Caster's Library is found under the DAR headquarters and it stretched beneath the entire town of Gatlin. There are dozens of tunnels that lead to all kinds of places. Marian is the head librarian and she is bound to help whoever asks her no matter what. She makes the mistake in telling this to Lena and Ethan. It is extremely easy to get lost in The Caster's Library because it all looks the same. Since it only opens on certain days there is no way to get someone out if they didn't make it out before closing time, which is dawn. Also, time passes in a whole different manner when you're in The Caster's Library. It can seem like hours when really it's only minutes, so you must watch the clock or your watch closely. There is an illusion hiding the entrance of the library, it looks like a normal cement wall, but if you were to touch it, nothing would be there because it is only an illusion.
The Book of Moons: The most powerful spell book for Casters. The Book does not give freely, it must take something in return. It is what cursed the Duchanne's family. Lena's great, great, great, great, great aunt used the book to try and bring her lover back to life during a raid in the Civil War, but it didn't work because Genevieve tried to cast the spell when there was no moon which if for workin Black Magic and a half moon is for workin Light Magic. Since that night the Duchannes have been cursed.
DAR: Daughter's of the American Revolution. This is basically a group of all the mothers who "run" the town. You are not allowed to be a member unless someone in your family was a confederate solider. They are basically the lynch mob. They will do anything to keep their town the same and they shun newcomers. They are led by Link's mother, Mrs. Lincoln. They are the people who start rallies if so much as a single little thing is changed in the town. They organize events, such as reenactments for tourists. They even tried to get Lena kicked out of school for good because she was new and she was different.
Ravenwood Manor: One of the oldest buildings in Gatlin. Ravenwood is a huge plantation. It looks dilapidated and run-down on the outside, but once you step inside you are blown away. Ravenwood takes some getting used to because it is rarely ever the same. It shifts and changes all the time, most times depending on Lena's mood or any particular way Macon wanted it to look. It also works in an odd manner. There are no servants, everything appears and happens with simple commands, for example, if you ever wanted something to eat or drink, you think it and say "kitchen" and it will appear before you. Around Halloween time, which is actually a Caster holiday, though it has a different name, the inside of Ravenwood turned into what looked like a medieval castle and just days before Lena's birthday it turned into what looked like a prison, and Lena was even wearing an orange jumper.
Sisters of the Confederacy: These are actually three, very, very old women who live together. Ethan spends Sundays with them and often refers to them as being his Aunts, though they aren't. They're hilarious and they forget a lot of things. They've outlived all their husbands and act, basically, like any crazy old lady would. They know a lot about the people of Gatlin and they have no problems sharing what they know, though it's tough to get them to stay on topic or for them to remember what they started talking about. They are highly religious and never miss a Sunday in church, ever.
