Not all magic is good, and we can't stop the bad, but we can teach you to defend yourself with the good.

User Name:LilyHermioneChapman
Teacher name:Daniel Blackburn
House:Gryffindor
Age:27
Description: User Image
Blood: Mix, father a muggle born mother half blood.
Wand:13 inch, Hickory, Hippogriff feather.

History: Daniel was born in Sweden, but when he was 2 his family moved to a small house in the muggle outskirts of London and that's all he has ever known. He was an only child but it wasn't for lack of trying. His parents had tried for 6 years before Daniel came along, and they tried as hard as they could to give him a little brother or sister to grow up with but it was no use. Instead Annabelle and Richard Blackburn had just Daniel and were very grateful for him so worked on raising him the best they could, making sure he had everything he needed, and taking care to let him grow up being polite and respectful but also knowing how to get what he wanted out of life. Daniels father believed firmly in the saying 'spare the rod spoil the child' as he had been raised with a father that believed it. His mother on the other hand believed firmly that freedom and liberty was a reward and privilege needed to be revoked if abused. As a result Daniel was accustomed to being spanked by his father and grounded by his mother whenever he was in need of discipline. From infancy he was taught to always be completely honest in all things, respect all authority and women, never touch another person unless he was helping them with their permission, to never quit, and to always put his school first.

Daniel's father had been sorted into Ravenclaw during his Hogwarts years and wanted his son to know all he could. Therefore he enrolled Daniel in the local Elementary school and encouraged him to always try his best. He was pleased to learn that Daniel had his brains as well as his love for school. He was less enthusiastic when he got a phone call from Daniel's school when the boy was in 2nd grade saying he had been suspended for fighting. Richard and Annabelle owned Flourish and Blotts and they had worked out a schedule that left Richard working from 8:00-1:00 and Annabelle from 1:00-6:00 each doing the shift Monday through Saturday and closing the store on Sundays saving that day for family. Since it was 1:30 when the school called it was a fuming Richard that went to pick up his son from the front office where he learned that Daniel had overheard a boy in his class making fun of a girl in the 1st grade. Daniel had stepped in to tell the boy to back off only to get shoved and laughed at as the boy went back to the girl. With the blood rushing to his head from anger Daniel decided to take action and the next thing he knew the two boys were rolling on the ground fighting. Daniel's magical abilities had given him the upper hand and he wound up wailing on the boy until the recess aid separated the two and took them to the office. Daniel was heavily scolded for fighting and when he got home he received a hard spanking and his mother told him he was grounded until his suspension was up, but he was also prided for defending the girl even though he knew it would probably land him in trouble. The girl rewarded him with a kiss the first day he was back at school and Daniel knew that it was all worth it.

While Daniel's father had been in Ravenclaw, his mother had been sorted into Gryffindor. Daniel has his father’s brains, but his mothers love for life and it's this reason that he enjoyed being in Gryffindor so much. His mother had always enjoyed finding new kicks out of life and so did Daniel. This is why he out riding one June morning when he was 10 and came across an old coal mine that had closed years before. There was a sign in font of the opening that said it was closed due to hazardous circumstances and nobody was allowed within 10 feet of it. Ignoring the sign Daniel tied his horse up to a post 5 feet from the entrance where she could graze for a bit and he entered the mine. After 20 minutes of exploring Daniel had had his fill and was on his way out when he tripped and as he hit the ground the mine started collapsing around him. Terrified by the sounds and knowing that he master had not returned his horse started whinnying and making such a racket that the old man that lived a few Meters away came out of his house to see what was going on. Seeing the horse by the mine and hearing the crashing inside he ran back into the house and grabbed a flashlight before running to the mine and yelling inside to see if anyone was in there. Daniel replied back saying he was hurt but not seriously. He just needed help finding a way out because his light had been broken in his fall. The old man entered and after only a few minutes of following Daniel's voice he found the boy and helped him out. He scolded the boy and told him that he had been very lucky not to get killed. Daniel listened to the old man lecture him about the dangers of the mine and youngsters not being able to read these days, and if they could read they were too disobedient to care and that if it had been him he would have been over his Pa’s knee with his britches down before he was even out of the mine. Daniel listened respectfully and thanked the old man for his help as he apologized for the trouble. He had a limp to his walk and his clothes were torn and dirty but otherwise he was fine. When he went to mount his horse though she took off without him and he wound up having to accept a ride home from the old man. When the beaten old blue ford pulled into Daniels Driveway both his parents were waiting having seen the horse come back some ten minutes earlier, and upon site of their sons condition asked what happened. The old man lost no time in telling the parents exactly what had happened with the cave in and the sign that Daniel had ignored and then the spooked horse running off. Richard thanked the old man for helping his son, and ensuring that Daniel had made it home safely. He then assured the man that Daniel would be punished. Sure enough as soon as the old man drove off Daniel was brought inside and before his mother was allowed to patch him up Daniel was given a good hard spanking with a scolding that lasted all through it and the rest of the day as well as being grounded for 2 weeks.

It was this same spirit that got him through Hogwarts, but he grew to be a favorite of many of the teachers quickly and he was the Gryffindor with the fewest letters sent home each year. Daniel was always top of his class, and in 5th year he made Prefect. 7th Year he became Head boy and although those three years were tough he never gave up trying his best. After he left school Daniel went and worked in his parents store before taking a year to travel the world where he met a young witch from the United States by the name of Sabrina. She caught his interest and even when he went back home they stayed in touch. At 21 he talked her into moving to London and the two got married when he was 22 and had a baby girl 18 months later. Today he has his oldest Samantha who just turned 5 in July, and twin boys Paul and Joshua who are 2 years old. His wife is also just had another baby named Abbey in January. He had been working his parents store with Sabrina at his side but in December two years ago when his old friend Conan Dasklin called him up and told him he was having even more trouble than usual holding onto a DADA teacher and asked him to take the position starting right after thee break. Daniel took it knowing he had never really liked running the store and this would still be a stable job where he could support his family even if they were farther apart. He had always thought about going back to Hogwarts, but never got the courage to apply. He now returns for his third year as the professor much to the astonishment of most of the staff and students. Daniel has not liked the scatterbrained Emily Wixom being Deputy Headmistress, and is slightly annoyed that the girl is being made Headmistress, but after the Hogwarts attack he realizes that she is stronger than she seems. He knows his anger is mostly jealousy, but he knows he can't handle it. He is excited to be training young Nathanial Ramiro in the Defense position.

Personality: Daniel is strict like his father, but also fun loving like his mother. He is always trying to think of ways to liven up boring lectures but if you misbehave he has no problem coming up with swift punishments. He is also a very fair person so he'll give you a chance to explain if you want, but unless you have a very good excuse and a witness the most that will do is possibly lessening a punishment. Daniel believes in rewards as well so it's not uncommon for him to either give or take house points depending on your actions. Daniel is also one to give out detention and extra work like its candy if you're misbehaving so watch your back. He's strong both physically and mentally so you are not advised to start fights because he can and will finish them. You can often find Daniel laughing and enjoying life, but he also knows when to be serious and he will always demand the respect he deserves as a Professor.

This past year was extremely hard on Daniel. With being the Defense Professor, Head of Gryffindor, an away father with an expecting wife, it's definitely taken it's toll. Daniel decided that it would be better for him to just step down as Head of Gryffindor this year, and try not to make himself go insane. When he heard Emily was going to start going through training to become the Headmistress, he had at first been angry. She was so young, so high strung, so scatterbrained, so lenient... she couldn't be Headmistress. Then he thought about what all she really does, and decided that it's just more power to her. If she wants to fry her brain and become a resident in St. Mungo's pysch ward before she turned 25, she could just go right ahead. He doesn't exactly approve, but he won't say anything as long as she doesn't pull extremely stupid moves that could put the students at risk, and so far, he's seen that she is actually very careful when it comes to things like that.

Classroom Rules

Come Prepared:
This class is very rigorous and I expect you to step up to the plate by being prepared. This means that you have your book at ALL times. Those in the older classes will not need their books a lot but they are expected to carry them just in case and there WILL be book checks randomly. If a student of any house or year is caught without their book it will result in a 1 on my discipline scale. If it's repeated in a week that student will move up each time but it starts over each week.

Talking:
You WILL NOT talk while I am speaking, or during my tests. If you have a question or comment you WILL raise your hand and wait for me to call on you. If you fail to do this you will receive a 1 on my discipline scale and if you do it repeatedly through the week it will go up each time. You will start over with the start of a new week however.

Passing Notes:
I had better not see a single note being passed in this class. The only time you would need to pass notes is during a lecture or test and I won't allow it. If I catch you I will take the note and read it to the class. Whoever I took it from and whoever it was getting passed to will then receive a 1 on my discipline scale to increase EVERY time I take a note no matter the time frame between. Even if you did not write the note and are just passing on because you're in the middle you will be punished as the sender. If the note is offensive to anyone it will be jumped to a 2 on the discipline scale and it will be given to EVERYONE involved. That is whoever started it to MY knowledge, and EVERYONE who has hand writing on that piece of paper. If it's during a test it will be counted as cheating and EVERYONE involved will receive a 5 on my discipline scale and a 0 on that test.

Magic:
The ONLY spells you are to use are those I have told you to. If I have not told you to do magic or a certain spell and I see it you can bet that you will IMMEDIATELY find yourself stunned and getting a 5 on my discipline scale. You will also have your wands confiscated to be picked up at the end of your detention that night. That means that if you can't serve it with me that night you won't get it until you can serve with me.

Fighting:
Fighting will get you stunned and an automatic 5 on my discipline scale. If it's with your wand you will lose your wand until the end of the first day of detention with me. Just like for magic without permission.

Homework and Tests:
I give a lot of homework and I expect it to be done the next day. I will collect it at the beginning of the class and if you don't have yours you will receive a 0 on the assignment and a 1 on my discipline scale. As for tests, they will be given every second and fourth Friday of the month. They WILL be comprehensive for that year unless you are in the O.W.L. of N.E.W.T. level in which case they will be comprehensive for ALL years. If you are caught cheating you will receive a 0 on the test and a 5 on my discipline scale.

Tutoring
All tutoring is by appointment. If you feel that you need extra help contact me and set up a time so that I can help you. If I feel you need extra help I will come to you and tell you to come to tutoring. If you don't come I will consider it a neglect and you will receive a 3 on my discipline scale.

Foul Language:
I don't hold with foul language and if I hear it you will get a 2 on my discipline scale. It's disrespectful to those around and it's a very immature way to handle things.

Detention:

Detention is not something I take lightly. If you have it you deserve it and I won't go easy on you. You will sit with me for 1 hour doing whatever it is I have come up with and I can tell you now it will NOT be lines. If you are late to a detention I will not accept you and it will be considered skipped. If your detention is considered skipped I will consider it a neglect and you will get a 3 on my discipline scale.

Tardies and Absences:
Don't even think about it. You know your schedule and I expect you to keep it from day 1. First years, ask for help if you struggle because I will not be lenient. Your entire body is to be in a chair behind a desk BEFORE the tardy bell rings or talking to me. If this is not the case you WILL be considered tardy and receive a 2 on my discipline scale unless you have a note. If you miss my class you have until before class the next day to get a note in my hand or it's a neglect and you will get a 3 on my discipline scale.

Discipline Scale

1. Verbal Reprimand and a loss of 5 house points.
2. 1 night of detention and a loss of 5 house points.
3. 5 nights of detention and a loss of 10 house points.
4. 2 weeks of detention and a loss of 20 house points.
5. A month of detention and a loss of 50 house points. 6th and 7th years will be removed from my class.

My grading scale, is very strait forward and basic. As you have already seen, I believe in homework, participation, and exams. Those will be the 3 components to your grade in my class, and be warned that I don't offer extra credit. I think that it is a cop-out, and a waste of my time. Therefore, you are advised to get every point you can. I also do not accept late work, so make sure you keep up. If you are failing my class and you are a 5th year or below, you will be expected to come to my office every day during my detention hours to work with me. If you are a 6th or 7th year and are failing my class, you have either talked to me, I've had compassion on you, and you are working with me every night during detention, or you have been kicked out of my class. 5th years and below, if you fail to come to my office during detention hours and you're failing my class, you will receive a detention and loss of house points. 6th and 7th years, if you fail to come to my office during detention hours without valid excuse, you will not find your name on my roll come class the next day. You will find my grading system below, and keep in mind that part of participation is being prepared for class.

Getting into my class is quite simple if you know how to read an follow directions. This is the simplest part of my class, so if you think that sending in a proper application is too much too handle, then I am afraid that you are barking up the wrong tree, and need to find a different Defense Instructor.

To apply for my class, take the form below, and put it in a fresh owl. This has all of the information I want from you, and you are to use these to create an application that you will write in letter format. That means that you start with 'Dear Professor Blackburn,' and end with 'Sincerely' followed by your name. The middle will also be in full sentences. Remember that we are trying to be professionals here, and you are capable of these simple steps correct? From there, entitle your letter "Application for Defense" and send it to my secretary LilyHermioneChapman. I will then look over your application and send an owl back to you saying if you have been denied or accepted. If you are denied, you can reapply by figuring out what you did wrong, fixing it, and sending in a new application, in a new owl.

[size=10][color=housecolor]Dear Professor Blackburn,

My name is ____________, (I want your first and last name, as well as your middle initial) and I am a ____ year in the house of _____________. I wish to take Defense because ____________________________________________________. (If you say that it is a required class I will deny you. This should be a few sentences explaining why you are interested in the class, and not just a few words). So far in my Defense training I have learned (Once again should be a few sentences instead of a few words. Tell me what you have learned). ____________________________________________________. I really like __________________________________________, but I don't like ________________________________________. (Make sure to keep it course related). I have read and understand your rules and expectations, and promise to adhere to them, or suffer the consequences. I understand what it means to be prepared, and will do my best to succeed, and learn as much as I can in the upcoming school year.

Sincerely,

The names below are the names that I recognize as my students. If your name is not here, then you do not belong in my class, and if I see you, I will report you to my secretary LilyHermioneChapman, and you will be placed in detention. To get your name to appear here you must have sent me a proper application, and had it approved. If your name should appear here, but it does not, kindly send me an owl and I will fix it as soon as I can.

Klára entered the classroom cautiously. She was a bit late, but it didn't look like anyone else was there, so she wasn't too worried. She found a seat in the back of the classroom and pulled her notebook and a quill from her bag. Klára hated quills, much preferred pens, but this was a wizarding school. So she used quills.

~Daniel Blackburn~

Daniel entered the classroom feeling greatly relieved. It was his first period of the day, and he knew he was facing the 6th and 7th years. However, he didn't have to worry about being Head of Gryffindor. He didn't have to think about the idiot students getting into trouble and getting sent to him. He felt kind of bad that some new chick had to deal with it, but at least it wasn't his responsibility. For once he was understanding exactly the kind of pressure Emily must be feeling.

When he entered his classroom he was pleased to see a student already there. He smiled as he walked by. "Good morning Miss Myšková. How are you this morning?" He knew it was slightly kind for him, but he was in a good mood. It didn't mean he was going to take a bunch of kids goofing off. It didn't mean he wasn't going to make them work. He just wasn't going to be a full stick in the mud. As long as they behaved themselves properly he didn't see any reason to go off on them. Unless they ruined his good mood. Oddly enough the N.E.W.T. students had a knack for doing just that.

Klára looked up from where she had been doodling little flowers in the margins of her notebook pages and smiled at Professor Blackburn. It wasn't without some surprise, however; usually the professor was a bit of a grouch, but hey, maybe a new year meant a fresh start for everyone rather than just students. "I'm just fine, Professor, and yourself?" she asked, instantly going into her polite repertoire of conversation vocabulary. She had spent the summer developing a full vocabulary of polite sentences, to ensure that she could nicely answer to anything anyone said to her. She had had a lot of free time over the summer.

Seth flopped into his seat with an exhausted thud. He had been unable to find the DA classroom in a timely manner, and was forced to conduct a high-speed circuit of the fifth floor to find the right room. He slid his notebook onto his desk, opening it to a random page. The page had a sketch on it. A sketch, lovingly rendered, of himself looking off into the distance, quite unaware of the attention being paid to him by the artist. Seth turned quickly to a blank page, looking pained. "Chi must have done that in Cairo..." He muttered, trailing off. He bit his tongue and stared at the floor in silence.

Klára closed her notebook as a boy walked into the classroom and sat down. He wasn't really all that close to her, but she got paranoid about the things she drew in her notebook very easily. Plus, he talked to himself. It was just a little thing, but still.... She shook her head and looked up at the boy. She might as well be nice to him. Even though, in her mind, she was being nice, she was actually being quite rude. "You've been to Cairo?" she asked without thinking about how he probably hadn't meant for anyone to answer him. She bit her lip. Wow, that was rude...

Alex walked into the room sporting the sour expression she had picked up in History. She still wasn't happy she had been punished because of something the idiot Gryffindor had done. She quickly scanned the room. Seeing that Klara was sitting by herself, one seat from the isle, Alex slid in beside her. This would make it impossible for Colt to sit beside her. Sure he could still sit in front or behind her, but she could handle that better. He also wouldn't be stupid and try and talk to her too much in Blackburn's class. Alex didn't think he would want to get a detention every period the first day back. He was crazy however, so she guessed she would find out. Alex unpacked her bag and decided that since she was going to sit by Klara, she should at least say hi. "Morning." She muttered quietly, not truly in the mood to talk.

Seth turned his head in a suspicious, angry snap, arctic eyes zeroing in on Klára, an aggressive retort fired up and ready to go. However, when he saw exactly who he was talking to, he forgot all about it. "Y-yes. I've been to Cairo several times. Lived there for a while as well. It's a nice town if you know where to look." He was trying very hard to remain nonchalant, but between her long brown-blonde hair and her olive eyes he was finding it difficult to stay focused. Fact of the matter was, she was about the most beautiful girl he'd seen. And he'd seen a lot of them.
"I'm Seth Norton," He said, extending a hand across the isle. "What's your name?" Esrath poked his head out of Seth's collar, curiosity piqued by his friend's sudden change in demeanor.
