"I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses...I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."
--Severus Snape (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chapter 8 )

User Name: mitsukochan33
Teacher name: Annaliese Zanbrecher
House: N/A
Year: Potions Professor
Age: 26
Description: User Image
Blood: Pureblood
Wand: 12-inch, blackthorn, thestral hair

History: Annaliese was born in Emden, Germany, a town in northern Germany that lies close to the border with the Netherlands. Her family was wealthy, but they opted to not live in a major city like Berlin or Munich simply because they did not want to bring attention to themselves because of their magical abilities. They lived a very posh lifestyle, filled with luxury items, plenty of acquaintances, and spoiled children. Annaliese was the eldest of three and the only girl. They were all equally spoiled, although that did not prevent competition and tantrums from occurring when one of them would get something that seemed better than the others'. The house (though "mansion" would serve as a more accurate description) was void of love and warmth as a result, since everyone was focused on money and other material things.

Annaliese's parents were fans of the Dark Arts and sent their children to the Durmstrang Institute of Magical Learning as a result. During her years of study at Durmstrang, Annaliese found that she enjoyed potion-making and decided to become a potions professor upon completion of her magical education. She would be delayed in fulfilling her dream, however, after brothers, Klaus and Anselm, killed their parents in an effort to gain their hefty inheritance several decades early. They were caught and sentenced to death by a magical tribunal, using the Dementor's kiss as the weapon of choice for their death. Annaliese watched her brothers' execution emotionlessly, for she agreed that everything they were suffering while the dementors kissed each of them was well deserved after what they did to their parents for such a selfish reason. Annaliese was left to finish her final year at Durmstrang with no family at all, although she had tons of money from her inheritance, so she filled the void her parents and siblings left her with items, much in the same fashion she had been taught as a child.

Because of her cold, loveless upbringing, Annaliese did not have much of an inclination towards love and romance. As a result, she went through many different men without ever feeling anything deeper than attraction towards them. Only one man was able to make her feel love for the first time in her life, and he ended up completely crushing her very core. Emerich and Annaliese became friends during their final year at Durmstrang. They kept in touch after graduating from the school, and soon, love blossomed between the two. Annaliese fell hard, since she had never loved anyone before. The two had the typical whirlwind, fairy tale romance, full of flowers, dates, and trips to Emerich's beach house. They planned marriage and children, and all seemed right in their world. This world imploded after one year of being together when Emerich confessed to cheating on Annaliese with more than a dozen women and revealing that he did not love her any longer, that he felt absolutely nothing for her. These revelations completely destroyed the very human, caring person that Annaliese had become while with Emerich. She became more cold, ruthless, and selfish than before, no longer even mildly optimistic about anything.

Five years after her personal tragedy, and two years after teaching Potions at Durmstrang, she was offered a position as Potions master at Hogwarts after the school heard about her outstanding talents in the subject. She figured she was due for a change in pace and scene, since she had not been to too many places that stressed anything other than the Dark Arts. She is curious to see how her job at Hogwarts will turn out and whether or not her students will learn from someone well-versed in the Dark Arts.

Personality: Annaliese is a very introverted woman, not very social, and very serious. She has a very jaded view of the world and has a hard time dealing with people who are always optimistic. She has experienced a lot of pain in her past, so she trusts no one and often lashes out at those who try to help her. As a result, she is actually very vulnerable, despite her cold, indomitable exterior. She is a proud pureblood and has no qualms about expressing that pride to those around her. She will not talk down about muggle-borns, nor will she insult them, but she wishes everyone could be pureblooded.

Pet: Brown pygmy owl (pictured) named Fritz

Position: Potions Professor

Other: Annaliese can be viewed as the female version of Severus Snape (personality-wise). She has the same serious demeanor and dark wit that Severus is well known for, along with a preference for purebloods she can't help.

Rules

Attitude:
You will be expected to be on your best behavior. I will not tolerate any slacking off or goofing off. I expect that you will treat me with the utmost respect. If you choose to treat me or other students with disrespect, you will be punished severely. Remember that if you come into this class and have the right attitude and do what you are expected to do, then you will have absolutely no problem in my class. I bid you good luck with this and the rest of your studies this year.

Homework/Tests:
There will be homework every class period. These will usually be essays based on whatever potion we work on that day, with their length determined by my mood and how badly you all behave. The better your behavior, the shorter the essay; the worse your behavior, the longer the essay.

There will be 3 tests each term with a comprehensive final at the end of each term. Pay close attention when brewing your potions and writing your essays; you will need to know how to concoct your potions formidably enough to pass the course and be able to explain why certain steps and ingredients are necessary.

Tutor:
I have set up times for every period that you will be able to come in and ask me any questions about a lesson. There will be times where I will be busy during a tutoring period, so a note will be placed on the door informing you of such an absence. Please do not schedule a time because you want to get out of a class; I will find out.

Absences and Tardies:
To be blunt, there are no absences in my class, much less tardies. A tardy guarantees you an automatic detention, with an unexcused absence granting you at least a month's worth of detention, along with a visit to your Head of House. Absences may only be excused by the matron in the Hospital Wing or by your Head of House. In other words, the only acceptable absences should be serious illness or a family tragedy (no, your sister's dress robes ripping do not count as a family tragedy).

Classes

These are the classes that I offer to students. Please join only the classes that your year corresponds to. I will not let anyone into more advanced classes.

Potions Level I: This is for the first years. They will be taught the basics of Potions. Terms, easy ingredients, and some simple potions will be the bulk of the workload.

Potions Level II: This is a class for the second years. They will look at a little more advanced stuff. The instructions and ingredients will be harder but only slightly.

Potions Level III: This is a class for the third years. They will look at potions with a little more power, but just barely able to affect a dog or medium-sized animal.

Potions Level IV: This is a class for the fourth years. They will look at potions that will affect humans but not harm them. They will also learn beginner O.W.L. level potions near the end of the year.

Potions Level V: This is a class for the fifth years. They will look at potions that will help them with their O.W.Ls this year.

Advanced Potions: A class for the sixth and seventh years. This is for all the advanced people that have finished all the other Potions courses. They will focus on N.E.W.T level potions.

~Laura S. Brechkovsky~

Laura walked into Potions, and took her normal seat at the very front of the classroom. She was once again the first one in the room, but this time she felt slightly guilty. She had a week of detention for leaving her sister already, and yet she had gotten out of History, and away from her sister, as quickly as she could. There was one thing soothing her however. Laura was fairly sure that Viktorya would not try to play games with Zanbrecher. Laura had no idea how Viktorya felt about Zanbrecher, but she knew for a fact that the woman was not an easy one to get along with, and she wouldn't play games. She also knew that Viktorya knew that because Zanbrecher had taught at Durmstrang. Viktorya's precious Durmstrang. She was therefore able to push the guilt out, and the only thought she had right now, was to pray that Viktorya didn't sit beside her. Pray Viktorya had a brain because Laura knew that if the girls were together, there was no way to avoid making Professor Zanbrecher angry, and Annaliese Zanbrecher was one Professor that Laura did not want to anger. Even speaking in Russian would prove a failure since the main language at Durmstrange was Russian, so Zanbrecher was sure to know it. Before Laura took her seat she stood at the perfect position of attention, and firmly stated "Good Morning Ma-am." To Professor Zanbrecher. She then slid into her seat and immediately started pulling out the materials she needed. As her classmates started filing in around her she could hear the shocked mutterings about how she had broken, and how funny she was acting. She did her best to ignore it however. The comments stung, but it was nothing she had to be afraid of. She was used to being talked about and made fun of. Right now all she cared about was killing the devil that claimed to be her sister. She couldn't do that however, so she would just have to sit quietly and ignore everything. Block it all out.

Harvey Wilkinson

Harvey walked into the Potions classroom right after Laura, still wondering what Viktorya had told Laura. He wanted to ask Laura about it on their way to Potions, but he chose not to because of Laura's obviously dark mood. He sat down on Laura's right side and took out his cauldron and textbook, then turned to Professor Zanbrecher and greeted, "Good morning, professor." Harvey sat quietly after that, knowing that Laura wouldn't say another word, and not wanting to anger Professor Zanbrecher either.

Viktorya Brechkovsky

Viktorya stormed into the Potions classroom, not turning to even glance at Professor Zanbrecher. Viktorya couldn't get over the fact that the woman had left Durmstrang to come and teach at a school full of mudbloods and half-bloods. Viktorya felt completely betrayed by her once favorite teacher. She walked to the back of the classroom and sat down on the bench, not bothering to take out her materials like the rest of her peers were doing. She placed her right cheek in her hands and glared at the wall to her left, feeling very unwilling to follow any directions this traitorous professor.

Annaliese Zanbrecher

Annaliese was happy to see her fifth year students walking in, despite the mercurial mood she had been in since the summer. She greeted Laura with a smile, unable to help herself since the girl always carried herself more formally than even Jonathan Yelsah did. She also greeted Harvey when he greeted her, glad to have two Prefects sitting at the head of her class. When Viktorya walked in, however, Annaliese felt another surge of happiness, since the girl had been one of her favorite students at Durmstrang. The girl walked by without a glance at Annaliese, however, and Annaliese's face fell. Why did the girl ignore her completely? Annaliese knew that Viktorya had thought of Annaliese as her favorite professor; had things changed for the girl in one year?

~Laura S. Brechkovsky~

Laura couldn't help the relief that flooded through her when Zanbrecher gave her a smile. She sat bolt up right, and looked strait forward. There was no way she was going to let Viktorya ruin her favorite class. Laura had no idea if Zanbrecher knew that she was Viktorya's twin sister, or that Laura even spoke Russian at all, but that wasn't important. All that mattered was that Laura was in Potions, and that meant she was in a place that she loved, and her sister couldn't get to her. She was even more happy when Viktorya took a seat in the back of the room. Already the tension was starting to ease, and Laura just sat in anticipation to see what Potion Zanbrecher would have them create today. She hoped it was complicated. If it was complicated she would be able to completely lose herself, and all thoughts of sisters and detention would completely disappear.

Annaliese Zanbrecher

Annaliese heard the bell ring and tried her best to push aside her questions about Viktorya's behavior and concentrate on the class she now had to teach. "Guten tag, everyvon, und velcome to Potions. For zose who do not know me, I am Professor Zanbrecher, und as you can tell from mein accent, I am not English." Annaliese was surprised that she managed to make a joke--however minute it was--since she had never really made a joke in front of any of her students before, except at Durmstrang when it had been at the expense of one of the students. Trying her best to keep up her stern face so as to scare the students into submission, she continued, "As zose who have had mein class before know, zis is no easy course und I am no pushover professor. Zis is an O.W.L course, so I expect most of you to provide me vith a different level of maturity und an increased appetite for learning. You are two years avay from leaving zis school und beginning your chosen careers in ze magical vorld, so now is ze time to begin preparing for zem." Annaliese paused to let this all sink in, hoping that she was pushing them to begin thinking that it was time to get serious about their schoolwork, since the first 4 years of their magical education were usually spent having fun, except in cases like Laura and Harvey. "Now, you all know mein class rules, so I vill not repeat zem all, except zis von: zare vill be no tolerance for tardies or absences except vithout a written note from a professor." Annaliese paused once more, then continued on. "So let us begin today's lesson. Today, you vill be responsible for preparing a Confusion and Befuddlement Draught. Can anyvon tell me vhat zis is und vhat it does?"

~Laura S. Brechkovsky~

Laura was perfectly strait in her chair the entire time Zanbrecher was speaking, and she held on to every word. She had had the woman before so she knew all of this, but she didn't want to miss anything important. It was just how Laura was. When she started into the lesson Laura became even more attentive if that was at all possible. She was at the perfect position of attention while sitting. One hand gripped the quill, poised ready for notes, and the other lay flat on her thigh, fingertips just touching the knee cap. When asked what a befuddlement draught was, Laura's hand was in the air quicker than light. This was her best class, and while Zanbrecher might not be as gracious with house points as others, here was a possible chance for Laura to win back some of what she had lost. When the Professor called on her Laura stood up and went to the perfect position of attention before replying "A befuddlement draught is a potion that confuses the drinker, and can make him or her wreckless, and or impulsive. 3 of the main ingredients are scurvy grass, lovage, and sneezewart." With that Laura took her seat once more and returned to her perfect position. There was no doubt about it. Laura wanted to study potions when she left Hogwarts.

Annaliese Zanbrecher

Annaliese nodded and smiled briefly at Laura as she answered the question, then said, "Perfect answer, Miss Brechkovsky. Take 5 points for Ravenclaw. Now, for homevork tonight, I vant you all to write me a four-foot essay on Befuddlement Draughts, due first zink tomorrow. As usual, please include zare uses, ingredients, und effects, along vith ozzer facts you can find. Any questions on ze assignment can be directed to me during ze lesson. Besides zat, zare vill be no need to talk during your brewing, und I vill not be shy about giving detention if I catch somevon talking. Now, gazzer your ingredients und begin making your potions." Annaliese watched the students as they got up with many scrapes of chairs and benches, making sure no horseplay or fights broke out around the ingredient cupboard. She kept a close eye on Viktorya, watching for any changes in mood or other signs that would tell Annaliese why the girl was ignoring her completely.
