Razorball
Sci-fi Roleplay

Introduction

You'd be surprised how much the world has changed since the 2012 apocalypse scare. To begin, on December 21, 2012 nothing out of the usual happened. A few nobodies went postal and killed a handful of co-workers, ex-lovers and life-long rivals and bullies but other than that, it was just another day.

Six years after 2012, we sent a team to Mars. They walked around a little, looked at rocks and did some test then returned. Thirteen years after that, we established the first ever Mars colony of sixty specialist from a range of different fields. The colony was occupied for the planned six month term, then the team returned to Earth, leaving the structures behind.

For the next sixty years, tiny populations of between thirty and ninety were sent to Mars to live on the colony, so test and expand the structures. Two years later, a small hotel was opened and regular people were able to walk on the Red Planet for a mere eight billion dollars a head. Six billion for a child.

Of course, during the many years of Mars exploration, there were many advancements in nearly every field back on Earth. Computer, transportation and medical technologies being the most important among them. It was 2093 and many aspects of science fiction had become science fact.

It was in 2144, that the final piece fell into place, which completed our transformation from Sci-fi to sci-fact.

First Contact.

However, it wasn't as depicted in most books or films. There were very strict laws that prevented either species from remaining on the others planet or vessels for an extended period of time. Such was the protocol that all space-faring species had to adhere, under galactic law. They gave us very little in terms of technology. Hints, tips, suggestions. They wanted us to discover what they had on our own and eager scientist back on Earth would have it no other way.

By 2216, Humans roamed the cosmos as freely as any other. They traveled to distant galaxies, discovered and documented brilliant phenomenas and learned and evolved in ways authors of times passed could never dream. However, it was when the infinite possibilities became everyday, mundane tasks that Earth as we knew it became very much like a chapter out of a sci-fi novel. . .

The sport known as "Razor Ball" had become very popular, very quickly. Traditional sports were great for high school kids and folks who willingly lived in the past, but for many people, young and old, living in a world of such excitement and endless possibility, something more was required.

"Razor Ball", in it's most basic of game-types, was a very simply game to understand. On each side of the field, there were scoring zones. In the middle of the field, there was a ball and scattered across the field were the participants. The objective to the game was to retrieve the ball and deliver it to the scoring zone on the opposing side of the field. The round began with each teams on their own side and ended when one team scored or ten minutes had expired.

Sounds harmless enough, right? Well, that's where it gets very unoriginal. Each team are equipped with weapons. Some game leagues allow only melee weapons, others only ranged. The most popular league allows participants to use either ranged or melee or nothing at all. The sport, as you can very well imagine, is not the safest of sports. A player who last for more than thirty games are often considered legends, however, there have been more than a few players whole lasted but a single game who have also gone down in Razor Ball history.

However, all of the players are nothing more than a clever script running on a powerful computer which operates a synthetic body. They have a single objective; to win. Some try to kill the opposing team while others try to get the ball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for spectators, it wasn't very long before even the extreme game of Razorball became everyday and mundane. After a while, the scripts that ran the AI became too well adapted. Rounds were won and lost in a few moments and entire teams were slaughtered by the same tactic employing the same attack. There was only one way to make the game more dynamic, more entrancing, more. . . Human.

The very first All Human Razor Ball League was established in 2229 and began broadcasting in 2232 when appropriate law changes were made which allowed human participants to willingly put their lives on the line to compete in an insanely life-threatening sport. In a matter of days, teams were assembled. Players signed up for a variety of reasons. The fame, the fortunes and some simply to kill without repercussion. The players ranged in size, shape, race and species, from the seven foot plus tanks to the lithe four foot runners. Plays were drawn up and executed, players adapted and responded appropriately, always changing, always learning. The problem had been solved and Razorball quick stole back it's titled as the most entertaining game in the Milky Way.

Today, the galactic qualifiers begin. Which team will rise to the top and which with die in a gruesome, yet sickly satisfying manner trying?
