Honestly, I remember a time where natural disasters were reported on the news only around five times a year. But lately I've been hearing something everyday! Volcanoes in Iceland, Snow-pocalypse in New York, Meteorites in the mid-west [I SAW THAT s**t], and earthquakes EVERYWHERE. Kinda freaky when you think about it. Is this a sign of the end of the world [as we know it at least].

And please dont make a reference to 2012. That theory is a bunch of BS, and the movie was just a joke [a very funny one at that].

The 'increase' in earthquakes isn't really an increase. According to (insert name for people who study the earth and stuff like that) the number of earthquakes we've had this year is normal, they are just hitting in more populated areas, which makes it seem like there are more.

The freak snow storms, I think, are a way of Mother Nature saying "screw you global warming theory." xD

As for the volcano and meteorites, I have no explanation at all.

What's this about meteorites? biggrin I haven't heard of this one! I wish I can catch an awesome meteor shower at least once in my lifetime.

And what Charms26 said: the earthquakes are pretty normal, just bad luck on where they are. ^^ And global warming's a good reason for very cold winters, too. But I believe the winter storms and the very likely high hurricane season is because of El Nino. Along those lines... I haven't kept close track of it since I stopped taking my geology classes.

Personally, I don't think we're getting more, just that our ability to report and spread information is just getting THAT much better. I mean, the more technology we have, the easier it is to find out what's happening in, say, China, the moment it happens. In the mid-1900s, that was unheard of. There might have been hundreds of natural disasters we never heard of.

That being said, if the world does end, it's not like we can do anything about it so why worry? wink

Hey I don't know. I mean in ancient Rome they said Rome would last 1,200 years. They lasted 1,229. Twenty nine years off? Thats all? Maybe they could be close. Or the family line died. Whatever it was, I believe its like 1999 to 2000.

LOL! It's because of global warming. We've set Earth's weather patterns out of whack because of all these factories, burning fossil fuels, and all other kinds of pollution. WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED EATING SOMETHING THAT HAS A WRAPPER, THROW IT AWAY NOT ON THE GROUND! I've seen where it ends up and it's not pretty.

News; A giant ash cloud has caused all of British airspace to be closed off, the ash cloud is from a volcano in Iceland and this is the first time all flights have been blah blah
Me; Hm. Giant ash cloud. Quite an interesting Geographical matter.
Mum; The world's coming to an end.
Me; obviously.

-Couple of days later-

Airports; (s**t we're losing money D: ) well, perhaps we were wrong and planes can fly through giant clouds of tiny glass particles after all...
Me; Perhaps the world's not ending just yet.
Mum; Eh, won't be long.

^ That was literally our conversations, in a really calm voice and every-day kinda tone. xD

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.__There are completely logic reasons for all of these. As Music-chan said, "I don't think we're getting more, just that our ability to report and spread information is just getting THAT much better." And as was also already said, earthquakes are happening in more populated places.

That Haiti earthquake? Would that have happened in the middle of no where, in a modernized location inside the USA, or at least someplace at least with decent building codes, I doubt many people would have given much thought and hardly anyone would have died. In the Chile EQ, I'm seeing mostly a report of 214 people dead and Baja California's having a total of two. Both were larger than Haiti's.

As for meteorites, they hit earth all the time. /: At least once a year a shower occurs and its nothing big. This is just like every other one. Just as with the "snow-pocalypse," except not every year. So it hasn't happened recently, big deal. It has happened before and it's no different.

The volcano on Iceland, Eyjafjallajokull (that's a mouthful), has been going on for about two months, and it's nothing that amazing. It's a shield volcano, as far as I can find. Have you SEEN Hawaii's Mauna Loa? >_>; I think she speaks for herself.
Shield volcanoes can erupt for a long, long time without being violent and then ALLL OF A SUDDEN, BAM. HI THERE. Or it could sit quietly, bursting it's bubble some time after.

Nothing is any different than before. Earth is doing what she does best. And global warming totally isn't real or at least out fault. l:<

I think that sums up this long, long post...

the other thing is media sensationalization. news stations will look for anything to do a story on, and if they can have many stories branch out from one event, they'll do their damnest to get them all. tragedy is their fuel <.< this, of course, is coming from someone who wanted to go into the journalism field (and still kinda wants to, but thinks the library field is more her).

point is, i don't think the world's going to end anytime soon -.- it's just paranoia influenced by the media.

Haha xD Thanks.
It gets weirder when my brother and dad are there. That's kinda normal.
^^;

Also on topic sort of:
Whilst I do see the solid evidence there is for global warming, part of me entertains the idea it's part of the world's natural cycle. Like when the ice age happened and ended and stuff like that. 'Cos sometimes we forget the world is a living thing just as we are.
Of course I have no evidence for this whatsoever. Just a whimsical thought floating around in my brain~
