You should know what a volcanic winter is by now if you are on this site. If not, read this article, I don't feel like explaining it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_winter
Time for the good stuff, surviving this most likely of apocalypses.
If you fear death and the end of the world, stop reading now.

That fact is, under Yellowstone National park is a super volcano, when it erupts, it will plunge the whole world into a volcanic winter, losses will be massive, there is no doubt, but will you be part of that loss. We might find out in your lifetime, it's overdue for an eruption.

First thing is first, establishing a base. You should find something that is easily defended against opportunists, and insulates and holds heat well, you're going to need it. For food, take what you can get, heat it over a fire if you have to, because everything is going to cold as hell, possibly frozen, even the canned food. There is no time to be picky either, preference doesn't matter

Time for weapons talk. Melee weapons are the best bet of the common man, not a lot of people are good with firearms. And, considering how much volcanic ash will be free floating, and how cold it will be, firearms will be susceptible to malfunction. So grab that axe and get the hell out of dodge.

Location, Location, Location. Your going to want to go to a high altitude, very high, above the ash if you can, so head for mountainous regions, they will be treacherous, but if you can find a good plateau with an easy way down, your in business. If mountains are not an option for you, go to a place that is densely populated with buildings, it will block a good amount of wind making for a bit warmer climate, and there will likely be plenty of supplies for the taking depending on how far into the apocalypse you are.

I have to disagree with you there. Despite it's uses for chores, a crowbar is a bad long term weapon, the hooked end will get caught and snagged a lot, it's main purpose is leverage for prying, while it's make for that is great, it is too off balance to use as a long term weapon, also, it's very heavy, I don't see anyone using it effectively for long periods of time.

the crowbar is not heavy be sides the end will not break and it is good for prying doors

for use as a weapon, yes, the crowbar is heavy, and I never said it would break, I said it would get caught on things, and I made point of the fact that it's good as a tool, just not the best choice of weapon.
