Shirow strolls into the class room wearing black and blue leather catsuit with biker boots. She wasn’t dressed much like an instructor but either way she heads straight for the front of the class. At the console at the front she logs into the Garden internal network. She stands there fixed on the console screen in silence punching keys looking for her notes. When she finds them she quickly reviews them then lets out an almost silent sigh before pulling the zip of her catsuit down to just above her cleavage.

She looks up and around the classroom,
“Hello, everyone. For those of you not aware, I am Instructor Shirow and I’ll be taking this class in Guardian Force Summoning. As you all should be aware this class is not mandatory. But I recommend you attend.

First off, I’m not fussed if you turn up to my class late. Just don’t disturb the class when you do come in. My classes are pretty informal, so, feel free to ask questions when you have one. And don’t worry there are no stupid questions, we are all here to learn. ”

She types a number of keys on the front console before continuing.

“My classes are purely theoretical; we will eventually be covering everything regarding GF and human pairing. So, even if you haven’t yet been paired, it’s not a problem you can still attend this class.

Now down to today’s lesson. Today, I’ll be covering the basic fundamentals of GF/human pairing. When you are paired with a GF you will fall into 1 of 3 categories;

Type 1: you have trouble summoning your GF. They seem to come when they summon or they come sporadically. If you fall into this category you will probably benefit the most from these lessons.

Type 2: you have no problem summoning your GF. These individuals as soon as they are paired are able to summon their GF. Now if you fall into this category you may find these lessons a tad bit boring.

Type 3: you have no problem summoning your GF but there is something wrong with connection between host and Guardian force. This is a very difficult category to identify, as there aren’t any external symptoms. Type 3’s appears very much like Type 2’s sometimes for many years. But Type 3 pairings can sometimes cause insanity in the host. I will be covering this category in a bit more detail at a later date.

Any questions so far?”

Alexei was, of course, early for class. He was never late now that he'd figured out where all his classes were and how long it took him to get to them. That was just the sort of student he was - keen and diligent. He sat patiently waiting for the class to start, with his hands folded in front of him on the desktop.

He was particularly keen for this class, since he'd just received his first Guardian Force - Hades.
'Just remember,' Hades had said dourly as Alexei walked to class, 'I'm not your pet, I'm a very powerful - and sentient - companion.'

"Yes, of course, Hades. I tell you right now, I am have very much respect for you," Alexei replied as he walked in and sat down.

Back in the present, Alexei immediately raised his hand.
"Miss Shirow? Is this Type 3 pair possible to happen if GF has not been paired for long time? Hades is something out of practice."

'Tell the whole class, thank you so much. Why don't I tell them about how you cried yourself to sleep the first night after we paired?'

"Because they can't hear you," Alexei replied coolly.

'...I could find a way.' Hades said spitefully. Alexei knew Hades wasn't actually mad - in fact, he was just as worried about his host going insane as Alexei himself was. Surely, no GF wanted a crazy master.

Despite not being enrolled, or even needing to take the class, Aki had decided to pop in to Shirow's lesson on this particular day. After her experience at the Galbadian Research Facility, she was determined to make an effort to learn more about her GF's. Truthfully, she hadn't taken a course involving GF's since her first year at Trabia, many years ago. The instructors usually found her particular situation too unusual, so nobody questioned Aki when she stopped taking the Summoning and GF classes.
She had creeped in early, taking a seat at the back. She didn't want to make the students nervous, so she had sat quietly and to herself, waiting for the class to start.
When Shirow enters, she greets her with a smile, but keeps quiet and listens intently.
"Well, I'm certainly type three, aren't I?" Aki says to herself.
"That you are. Though the crazy was your own doing," Bastet says, surprising Aki with her jest.
She had never really gotten along with Bastet, so it was strange to hear her teasing in a friendly way. Aki can't help but smile to herself.

Xero opens the door and walks in,excited to learn about GFs as he just happened to aquire one. He gave a little wave to the other students and a nod to the headmistress and took a seat to the right of the classroom. "I'm not too sure about me maam,I've never summoned my GF yet." He took out a notebook and a pencil to scratch notes and listened.

She doubles checks the rotas on her console then looks over to Alexei, "Alexei, isn't it? The answer to that question isn't straight forward."

She clears her throat before continuing, "You see, as type 3 are very hard to identify. By the time they are identified the host is pretty much on the edge. And if something isn't done quickly it can go bad very quickly.

Because of the difficulty identifying this type externally, we only find out after things go wrong. Which makes extensive studies into the duration and severity of the negative effects all that more difficult. Unfortunately, certain factions in this world have developed drugs which will create and/or forcefully speed up symptoms

Before the host and GF can be paired, there is an extensive period of compatibility studies are done. But they aren't perfect, mainly due to sheer number of factors to consider. But what it boils down to is how strong you are mentally. And no-one can hold resist forever.

But fear not, medical research has improved greatly and many of the symptoms are treatable. Sometimes a separation is necessary for the healing process. Remember, a human mental strength is about 100,000th times less than a GF mental strength. The reason we don't all go insane is the GF's ability to restrain themselves from flooding our minds. The magnitude of the difference between GF and human statistics are mind blowing. Which I will cover in more detail later on.

That's not a problem, Xero. You'll soon know when you come to summon for your first time. I'll also covering that but later on. Any more questions before I continue onto the next topic?”

"Yahoo!" There was a loud yell from somewhere outside the classroom, followed by rather loud footsteps as someone was running down the hall getting closer and closer to the classroom. It was only moments later Shiro came bursting through the classroom door, rolling once before coming to stop on one knee. "Sorry I'm late Professor, I still haven't got the layout of this place down."

"THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOT HAVING THE LAYOUT DOWN AND HEADING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION." "he's right for once. you should have just asked someone." The Brothers said to him, shaking their heads in disapproval.

"Oh? I'm pretty sure it was you two who encouraged him to go challenge more monsters in the training center rather than try and at least learn the basic structure of the Garden." Ifrit growled in, causing the brothers to grow silent. "Stop fooling around young human, the class has been interrupted enough already."

"Yeah yeah I know. Anyway sorry teach. I didn't miss anything did I?" But before he could get an answer Shiro was already jogging to the nearest open seat, jumping into it in an exaggerated manor and almost kicking the student sitting next to him.

Caine found himself in a similar situation as Shiro. He had gotten lost on his way to class and showed up moments after his classmate with a sheepish grin.
"Sorry I'm late, I'm new here," he says, slinking through the door and sitting in the closest seat.
When he is settled, he looks up at his instructor with a smile, which immediately turns into a grin.
'Damn, she's pretty fine for a teacher,' he thinks to himself.
Caine looks around the room, his grin growing as he does so.
'There are a LOT of fine ladies in this room," he thinks, crossing his arms and leaning back casually in his chair.
"I have a feeling you're going to get punched by the end of the day," his GF, Lilith says.
Caine's smile falters, and he glares at nobody in particular.
"Thanks for the support..." he mutters, rolling his eyes.

Alexei shifted his body to the left as Shiro came tumbling into the seat next to him. He gave his friend an exaggerated nod and turned back towards the Instructor.
'Don't worry, I'll try my best not to drive you insane...' Hades told his master, causing him to shiver involuntarily. He still wasn't used to having Hades in his head, and a chill ran down his spine every time the Lord of Death spoke.

"One more question - sorry - If host and GF pair before com...pata-bility study," he said, gesturing with a hand towards Shirow to indicate his repeating of her wording, and having a little trouble with the larger English word, "can this still be done to predict maybe-problems?"

By 'maybe-problems', he clearly meant 'potential complications', but those were English words he had yet to familiarize himself with, and so it sounded a little awkward, but the meaning was mostly apparent.

Alexei turned his head and smiled as he listened to Hunter.
"Thanks, for offer, but is okay. I am already getting help."
Alexei had been spending a lot of time with the young SeeD Adara since he arrived, and she'd been reading poetry with him to improve his English literacy.

He appreciated Hunter's offer, but he didn't want to get overwhelmed. He didn't want to admit it, but it was also a pride thing - Alexei hated not being great at something, which was why he always pushed so hard and was constantly asking questions.

"alright man, I might go to the Training Center after class to train, want to join me Alexei, I could use some help getting ready in case of the SeeD exams" Hunter could use the training so he could be ready for the SeeD Exams again, he got lucky in the prelim Exams and wants to do better in the real thing

She waves the late students into her class.

"I don't know how to say this any other way. So, I'll just spit it out." Shirow looks over to Alexei before continuing, "Unfortunately, the compatibility testing won't bring up possible complications. But that doesn't mean you'll all go insane. Type 3s aren't that common. So, don't worry."

"There are numerous research papers which conclude that complications in the pair are mainly due to the host ability to channel the GFs raw power. Let me explain, humans and GF both reside on this physical plane and the astral plane.

On this plane their bodies are not true representation of their power. To gauge that you must do a comparison on the astral plane. A normal human has an astral presence about the size of a 2litre bucket. A GF on the other hand has an astral presence about the size of Esthar City.

This abundance of astral energy is why GF have almost super powers in this plane. But pairing with a GF means our bodies must cope with channelling their energy during summons. Don’t be afraid we don’t channel all of it or our bodies would turn to charcoal. We channel only enough for them to make the leap into this plane. Complications happen when you summon you GF, you body can only channel so much energy much like a fuse.

But unlike a fuse we don’t have a stamp on the side of our heads letting us know how much energy our body can take before cells start to burn out. You’re probably going to ask so, if cells burn out you must be able to notice them. The short answer is no.

When you pair up with a GF, their energy is always present in your body. The amount is considered to be residual but it is large enough to alter your bio-chemistry. In other words, burnt out skin, lung, heart cells are quickly regenerated. The only cell type that can’t regenerate are brain cells. And if you burn out enough brain cells you will suffer psychological episodes. And we simply don’t have the technology to identify or cure these problems.

That’s one of the reasons Garden has a strict age limit. Because your bodies and minds are young that recovery from pairing will be quite easy. The older you are more likely to suffer these effects more often. That’s not to say you’re immune if you’re under 21."

"Well that explains a lot..." Aki mumbles to herself.
"Yes, but I think our situation is a little different. Not one of my previous hosts went crazy," Bastet replies.
Aki raises her hand and pipes up for the first time.
"Instructor Shirow, What would you think are the long term effects of, say... leaving your GF junctioned for a long period of time... as in, years? Many years?" she says, seeming both eager and somewhat nervous about the answer.
"Fine, do not believe me. But I assure you, if you go crazy it is entirely your own fault," Bastet says.
"You've already driven me crazy a number of times, in case you had forgotten...." Aki mutters, slightly pained at the memories.

"Sounds good," Alexei told Hunter quietly before turning his attention back to Shirow. He didn't want to speak out of turn while there was a lesson going on.

Alexei understood the root of the Headmistress' question - that day during weapons training that she'd nearly decapitated them all was something he always worried about in the back of his mind whenever she was around. Logically, he knew she wouldn't go into a frenzy at any moment, but he still had a healthy nervous feeling around her.
