Screaming Is Bad For The Voice... So, today as I was channel flipping, I noticed a discussion focused around tattoos on Tyra. So, I became interested and stopped to watch, only to find out that most of it was based around people who got name tattoos (mostly of 'significant' others). Most of these people had, since getting that tattoo, had broken up with that person, and of course, regretted ever getting it. There was even a couple on there. The man said he really wanted the relationship to work, but felt he couldn't be with a woman who had another man's name on her skin. Tyra ended up arranging for a free tattoo removal for her.
She also had on Lulu, one of America's Next Top Model former contestants. She has a tattoo of her girlfriend's name, above her boob. After being asked about it, it came out that they hadn't even made it to the two-year mark in their relationship, this is Lulu's first girlfriend, and the tattoo had been done while they were on a 'break' from their relationship. She also admitted that she hadn't really thought it out, and getting it done had been a bit of an impulse.
It got me wondering, why is it that so many people don't seem to seriously think out their tattoos? It makes no sense to get a boyfriend or girlfriend's name tattooed onto your body. Tattoos are very obviously permanent, while a relationship is not. If you break up, which is very likely to happen, you'll always have that name there, unless you get it covered up with a larger tattoo, or pay a lot of money to have it removed. Even if you get married, getting their actual name isn't a good idea, because many marriages end in divorce anyway.
I think the only time getting a person's name tattooed on you is justifiable, is if they're directly related to you, or if it's a memorial tattoo, and even then, you could be a little more creative and get something besides the name itself.
In my humble opinion, in 95% of cases, name tattoos just look downright tacky. It's better to get some sort of image or something that reminds you of them, rather than their name.
Anyway:
What do you think of name tattoos? Do you know anyone with one? If so, who's name is it, and do they regret getting it? Would you ever get a name tattoo, and if so, under what circumstances?
And well: Discuss!
...But It's Good For The Heart

HAHA, Ohhh such an old topic.
I knew a girl back in highschool who was dating a guy much older than she was [and I was already a year older than her]. He had her name tattooed down his forearm in large Old English type font. I think their relationship was about... 2 years old? And there was apparently a lot of emtional abuse throughout it. BUT OFF THAT TOPIC. They broke up and he always tried his best to try and get her back. . . But never succeeded in doing so.
It's just a really bad idea ><; I know a couple; they work with my Boyfriend. Instead of getting each others initials [which I think was their original idea] the girl pretty much told him they had to get matching BUTTERFLY TATTOO'S ON THEIR HANDS. No lie. My boyfriend and other people at work always made fun of the guy for it. Mostly because they'd been in their relationship for only 2 months before doing this. xD
I told my boyfriend I wanted matching tattoo's with him. Though it'll mostly likely be something along the lines of a Star or something. [I say star because we do both love Astronomy]
Otherwise; Name Tattoo. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN talk2hand

My back piece was designed by my now ex-boyfriend when we were in high school together. I hardly ever see it since it's behind my shoulders, but when I do, it reminds me of our fun times we had as kids, not the few hours it took us to break up. It reminds me of 6 years of commitment, dedication, fun times, and love. While it lasted. I don't get angry when I see it, it doesn't make me sad. If it were his NAME, I think it would be a different story.
There's actually a supposed "curse" associated with name tattoos. If you get your SO's name tattooed on you, you WILL break up violently within a year at most. I've seen this happen.
A girl I used to work with was going out with some dude from another part of the store. One month after making the boyfriend/girlfriend official, SHE GOT HIS NAME TATTOOED ON HER TRAMP STAMP. His name was Evan. Short name, big ol' tramp stamp. Within two weeks, they were broken up and never spoke to each other again. She was fired shortly after the breakup because she refused to show up because she might see him in the next department over. I saw her a few months after and she had a HUGE rose/tribal/thorny vines cover up.
So that just goes to show you NEVER get a boyfriend's/girlfriend's/husband's/wife's name tattooed on you. BLOOD, you can, for some reason. Your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparents, niece or nephew isn't included in the "curse".
On the subject of memorial tattoos, I hate seeing someone name in Old English script, then some HUGE black and white Celtic cross, then their birth and death dates underneath it. It's SO tacky!!! Get something cooler, like their favorite animal, favorite flower, favorite thing tattooed on you instead. I had a conversation on Gaia once about memorial tattoos. His friend died of a drug overdose, so he was going to get a giant syringe tattooed on his arm to remind him of his drug days too. I said "Why get the image of what KILLED him? Get something that reminds you of his life." Like if his favorite thing to do was pluck a guitar, get a guitar. If he loved to play video games, get something related to that. Get something that reminds you of the GOOD times with the parted person, not what killed them or reminds you of their death.

I agree with the memorial bit. This is why my dads memorial was his favorite blue Fender Strat guitar, and on my wrist next to it it says "Fender Strat Cat" instead of his name, because that is what he was (his best friend of 15 years called him that at the memorial and I loved it, fit him perfectly)
As for names and what not, I do believe in the curse, I would never do that. My friend and her husband have matching tattoos, she has Princess Peach on her ankle and he has Mario on his calf. If they ever got divorced it wouldn't bug them because it would remind them of the 2+ years they were married straight out of high school..and the fact they are ALWAYS playing video games.

I don't really like name tattoos.. I always wonder what would happen if those people break up.
I don't believe in the curse.. but I wouldn't want someone elses name on my skin forever.. what if the marriage or relationship fails?
The most I could do would have a name in binary code or something.. I used to want a lot of stars and for one of them I wanted it to have binary code of my ex's name (this was while we were dating) and looking back on it now.. it still wasn't an awful idea.. I mean if you break up with them it's easy enough to just fill in the star. XD
I still think matching tattoos are better then name tattoos for couples; as long as it is something that both people like.. instead of just one..
Nothing will ever beat this name tattoo though..

I'm guessing her name is Brenda?
I went to church with a guy who had MALICE tattooed on his back. He became a Christian and him and his parents were giving their testimony (he used to be in prison) and his mom was all "Hopefully we can at least get rid of the "M" and he'll find a nice girl named Alice" rofl

Like, if someone hangs themselves, and you get a memorial tattoo for them, don't get like, a noose on you or something. You should be remembering the good days and whatnot. Also: I'm perfectly fine with stuff designed by an SO or a friend. Or matching/pair tattoos. Stuff of that nature. But names are just so Ughhhh gonk .

What do you think of name tattoos? I personally would never get a tattoo of the guys/girls full name that I was dating. I do, however, have a tattoo that signifies my family. It's my initial (L), my daughter's initial (A) and my ex fiance's initial (C) going around the tips of a star. It's something that I'll never regret getting because no matter what we'll always be a family. It signifies a great period of my life.
Do you know anyone with one? Yeah. A couple of my aunts and uncles have them. One of them is recently divorced.
If so, who's name is it, and do they regret getting it? Their significant others names, and I'm not sure if they regret them or not.
Would you ever get a name tattoo, and if so, under what circumstances? Like I said earlier, never a full name. The only other name tattoos that I'll get will be my future children and/or family members (grandparents).

I'd never ever obtain a tattoo with my lover's name on my body. Not even a tattoo designed by them or matching of any sort. Because relationships are not forever and at times they can be painful reminders of what you had. If I were to get names tattooed on me it would be of my family or offspring.

It does suck being with someone who has tattoos about previous relationships. My bofriend has TWO tattos about his ex -_-' That dumbass really thought it was a good idea at the time. He was 16 years old and he thought he was going to stay with her forever. Its not her name but those words in his arm and leg are for her. Sometimes I like to tease him.
I think its a bad idea to tattoo something about a boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife. Relationships end, tattoos don't.

My mom has my ex-stepdad's name tattooed on her ankle. It's a Pegasus holding a banner with his name inside. She does heavily regret it, because yes they are now divorced. She always wears jeans or some form of pants, so no one ever really sees it so I guess that's a good thing, but still the thought of having it on your body..unpleasant. I don't think name tattoos are a good idea (with the exception of memorials, etc.), but if you just HAVE to get something that represents a significant other, get a symbol or design that can easily be told to have a different meaning if you both break up.

As the end of the day, even a married couple who have been together for over 20 years don't know what the future's going to hold.
I think getting someone's name on your skin; a significant other, a friend, or even a relative is just stupid because you can't know for certain whether or not you'll fall out, or if something else will happen to breach that relationship that you have with one another.
Even if it seems like a great idea at the time, more often than not it will just serve as a painful reminder.
As Ghost said, avoid names and get a symbol, or something similar if you really want a tribute to someone on your skin. I'm not even that keen on any tribute to anyone but yourself, personally, but at least if something were to happen, you can associate said symbol with something else.

I agree with name tattoos... it just depends on whose name it is.
I already have one, but it's my brother name. I plan on getting tattoos for my mother, father, grandmother that passed away, and grandfather that passed away.
Would I ever get a tattoo for a significant other? Yeahhh... great 40-year marriage anniversary gift. He he.
