Canis lupus arctos
The Arctic wolf is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus). In other words, the Arctic is a Gray Wolf that inhabits a certain geographic region. It is simply a geographic race of wolf. Its habitat is the high Arctic, the area north of the North American continent. There, they eke out a living on the large islands in the Arctic ocean. Located between 70 and 75 degrees north latitude, Arctics live above the Arctic circle, which is only 67 degrees north.
The Arctic's world is bleak, frozen, barren, and pitch black 24 hours a day for about five months of the year. Harsh winds blow almost constantly, with wind chills reaching -100 degrees Fahrenheit (-73 degrees Celcius). The tallest plant in the summer is six inches high, the nearest tree more than 1,000 miles to the south.
Arctic wolves are specially suited to their environment. With smaller, rounder ears than other wolf subspecies, shorter muzzles and slightly shorter legs, Arctics decrease exposure of their extremities to the cold. Often weighing more than 100 pounds, Arctics concentrate their body mass efficiently for warmth. Often sleeping in the snow amidst brutal winds, these wolves seem undisturbed by their environment. Their only noticeable discomfort may be squinting as they walk into the storm. White or off-white in color, they are vaguely distinguishable in winter months from the surrounding glaciers and snow.
Since prey is not nearly as plentiful as it is for other wolf subspecies, pack density of Arctics is very low, usually being one pack per 100 to 800 miles. Although Arctics consume both Peary Caribou and Arctic Hares, Musk Oxen are their main prey. Herds of up to 30 oxen roam constantly over areas as large as 1,000 square miles and wolves must follow. Backing into a large circle, with calves huddling between adults, the giant oxen form a strong defense and often, wolves are at risk of serious, even fatal injury as they kill in order to eat and survive.
What most definitely sets Arctic wolves apart from other wolf subspecies is their temperament. Arctics are known to be much more accepting of humans than other wolves. The reason for this is widely agreed upon. Since Arctics are so isolated from mankind, they have been disturbed less, hunted less, and have not suffered the cruel persecution at the hands of humans that other wolves have. Consequently, be it for better or worse, they have not yet learned to fear people to the same degree that other wolves have.
