A Yemeni child bride forced into marriage has died from ruptured sex organs.

Ilham Mahdi al Assi, 13, died Friday in Yemen’s Hajja province hospital from a hemorrhage of the sex organs, according to the Shaqaeq Arab Forum for Human Rights, a non-governmental organization that supports a ban on child marriages.

The young girl was wedded five days prior to her death in a “swap marriage” in which the brother of the bride also married the sister of the groom, AFP reports.

Controversy heightened in Yemen recently over a law banning child marriage in the impoverished country through setting a minimum age of 17 for women and 18 for men. Many of young Yemen girls are married off even before puberty.

The human rights group said Ilham’s death was a “flagrant example” of the opposition of a ban on child marriage, which is “killing child females.”

How very, very sad. It’s a sick world out there.

I saw this a couple weeks ago.
I don't know where to start. I don't understand what kind of man it would take to do that to a female and not get that he was causing serious harm. Perhaps he didn't know better. I don't know but it's sickening that women, girls, females all over the world still die in situations like this that don't protect them or their sexuality. It's appalling.

it's not Islam's fault, but that of a barbaric bedouin culture predating the Prophet.

female circumcision or clitoral mutilation is another joy of that culture.

Sick and Twisted Barbarians... that's all I can say for those people though I shouldn't insult them.

Whatever happened to respect for females? They are not property.

The sad truth is that not all cultures believe that, and no amount of persuasion is going to convince them to change a lifetime of social programming. Religion and Politics form entire cultures, and are nearly impossible to change.

once again my belief that we are ultimately doomed to destroy ourselves finds more reinforcement.

There are no words strong enough to express what I feel. It sickens me to think about the whole thing. I know intellectually that it takes time for a culture to change and hopefully rid itself of horrors such as this, it doesn't help overcome the feelings I have for this horrible event.

Wow, that's just........terrible. Sick. Could be here all night thinking of more words, but I think those two were enough to get the picture. Let's all hope that these cultures will one day learn to value the ideals of equality and respect someday.
