Through my card searching, I will notice a card that just grasps at my attention and I will declare it the card of the week! I will do my best to keep it in standard for the sake of making it helpful for those playing in standard tournaments.

All I have to say is Landfall + counter = Win.

If anything, Overgrown battlement is a nice cross of Llanowar Elf and Wall of Wood. Play 4, and each of them becomes much more. Being a green player, I might run a playset in a nice Aggro deck in need of something sturdier than Lawnmower Elves.

I, for one, am looking forward to the Defender "sub theme" in Eldrazi, "REVENGE OF THE WALLS" *insert sinister laughter*

The only downside is that the only way your opponent is gonna let you keep that stuff on the field is if they are running mono-green. Everything else has to much removal for you to rely that much on the board (hell, i have trouble tryin' to keep my lanowar/arbor elves out...)

If they want to PtE/Cancel/Fireball/Doom Blade my walls instead of my other creatures, personally I'm all for it. I'd rather have tons of removal targets than just a few threats.

I am digging the defender subtheme, and especially this card (as if I needed more ways to ramp...). It's pretty much a strictly better version of Vine Trellis. You picked well for Card of the Week, Link.

Well, I want to do this card of the week thing differently than others. Most tend to ephasize the rare/mythic cards, and those are supposed to be good, so I was hoping to bring out more of those nice commons/uncommon cards from the shadow of the others. Every now and then, I will give some of those rare/mythics the medals they deserve, but I think it's nicer for those with big game and small wallet to see how far these cheap cards can go. Thank you.

The card on it's own is good, don't get me wrong, i just think the defender theme is kinda ify. But then agian i haven't seen all these guys, so maybe i'm missing some awesome card that ties it all together.

Well, you have to realize that the defender subtheme is something that we don't really see too often. I, in part, want to see where it goes.

One thing I've noticed with the already spoiled walls is that they're making walls legitimately dangerous instead of just a nuisance, such as Rage Nimbus. Not only dangerous, but useful, such as a white Wall of Blossoms (Wall of Omens...that I, personally, am excited to eventually be able to play). There is also at least one card (a common) that will allow the walls to attack as well.

So are walls now considered to be defenders? Like I don't catch on to those subtle rule changes very quickly, was pissed when I found out Silence had to be played before the opponent drew for it to be effective, as the card could have mentioned that it could only be played during the upkeep.

If they have the keyword 'defender', they cannot attack. If a wall (which is now just a creature type) didn't have defender, it could attack as well. I still kind of just use 'wall' as a catch-all for anything that can't attack sweatdrop

Silence doesn't have to be played during the upkeep. It is an instant after all, meaning you could play it whenever you want. You just can't use it as a counter. I don't understand what you mean by 'to be effective' there.

Well, at FMN, a friend of mine tried to play Silence after his opponent drew, and the judges (it took four different ones before he finally gave up arguing) said that after the oppenent draws, the "ball has already been dropped"... Or something stupid like that.

I don't agree with it, but after talking about it to a bunch of the people I play with at school, they all said that was the rule. I think if that was the case, it would say it on the card, but supposivly there's a big book of rules for all sorts of cards out there.

Maybe the judges and all my schoolmates are wrong, who knows? But that's a lot of people to be wrong, and I can't find anywhere online to find out the truth.

Was your friend trying to stop a spell from being played by casting Silence, or were they just trying to set it up so their opponent couldn't play spells for the turn? Besides, if it was meant only to be played during one's upkeep, they would have made a clause about it either on the card or in the rulings. Sure, his opponent's turn had started, but I don't see what the difference is, since Silence can't prevent one from untapping and drawing anyways. The opponent could play instants in response to Silence, which would resolve first and therefore not be affected by Silence, but anything else would be too slow.

I decided to spend almost two hours yesterday looking up the answers. I went to the official site, and then went to the "judges" forums. I was half right, as were the judges from the tournament. It turns out that once it hits the main phase, whichever players turn it is has priority. Meaning, if I play Silence on my opponent after he drew and went into main phase, he can still cast any ONE spell before mine can react, as he has priority. So he can still summon a creature, but then my Silence is placed on the stack afterwards. Now, he can play instants or cards with flash/split-second to respond to my Silence, but after everything resolves, he can no longer play any other spell. Thanks for encouraging me to clear it up by searching frantically for the answer.

Another week another card, what you think?

Yoke is an okay limited removal, especially if you ran Devour, or maybe Bonesplinters in a Sealed game. I never personally got to use one, but hey I have like 5 so I might put them to work someday.

I like the flavor however, and I love making funky little decks using my commons. I could see this in a deck around Nantuko Husk/ Vampire Aristocrat being useful. Yay Casual!
