I love wifi and want it at my house. I live out in the country though, and no one I know has it, so there is no one that I personally know to ask my specific question. And I know absolutely nothing about routers or any of their tech talk. I did buy one with built-in DSL, though. So, if you're using a wifi router with built in DSL at home, please answer a question for me.
My question is: Being it hooks into the phone jack, do you have to pay your phone company extra to use it?
I already have DSL with AT&T, but I want to have wifi instead of just this plug-in thingy they sent me (what is this thing called anyway?). But I didn't know the router had to be plugged into a phone line...

I've had dsl for a very long time, and I can tell you that no, you don't pay your phone company, only your ISP.

And as a side note, I belive that little plug in thing is simply called a phone jack.

It actually depends much on your phone company. Internet does cost extra no matter where you are. But having a wifi router and using wireless could or could not cost a extra fee tacked onto your internet fee.

using a wifi router does NOT effect your phone or internet bill in anyway. It is a simple hardware add-on. I don't know about having one though. It definatley gives slower internet than a direct plg in, but many routers allow you to have both the router running and a plug in to 1 or more computers, so the ones plugged in get the full internet speed but the wifi still exists. There are 3 primary routers, b, g, and n. b is the worst, g is faster and works with both b and g recievers, n is the fastest and works with all three. keep in mind your computer/printer/other device has to have an n reciever to get n speed. if you have a g reciever on the deice, it will still get internet wirelessly from the n router, but will only use as much speed as a g router would put out
