I probably shouldn't have read this book at such a young age, but alas I did. It is by Lorenzo Carcaterra and details how a random prank lead to disaster for himself and his three friends when they were children in the 1960s. Their actions lead them to be sentenced to spend time in a correctional facility which changes their lives forever.
To let you know how young and innocent I was when I read this, I did not know what the word "rape" meant at the time. Yes, it is true. My copy of this book is one of those well-thumbed victims of repeated readings. I've read it at least five or six times. It was one of those cases where I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie, and the movie does it justice even with the small changes.
I was also so obsessed at one point that I wrote a poem based upon the story. I still have it too.
