Gene was smoking again, sitting on the roof. He had been smoking more and more ever since Melfina had left to live with Suzuka. It was getting unbearable to go more than 12 hours without another smoke.
Still, the night was nice and the stars were bright and any day now he'd have enough money to go back into space with Jim.

Jim climbed up on the roof to sit beside Gene. He was 16 now, his hair still shaggy around around his ears.
He sighed.
"Gene. Smoking again? Shouldn't you be looking for work?" He asked.

Gene looked over at Jim and snorted. "Hey buddy." He replied. "Naw. Work will find me." He grinned and held out his pack of cigarettes. "Want one?"

Jim scowled. "Gene, you lazy b*****d." He said unhappily. "We need work you know. We'll run out of food." He said. "And no thanks. No cancer for me."

Jim coughed, waving the smoke out of his face and sighed.
He stared at Gene for a minute and ran a hand through his hair. He forced himself to smile at Gene. "There."

"Good boy." Gene laughed and pulled Jim into his lap,laughing as the cigarette hung out of his mouth. "How have you been, kid?"

Jim sighed, crossing his arms over his chest and huffed. "Stressed. We need work, we need food. And all you ever seem to do is smoke and drink."

Gene laughed and stood up, pulling Jim up to his feel with him. "You are a worry wart, Jim. Keep this up and you'll be a wrinkles old man by the time you're 20."

Jim huffed. "Yeah, yeah." He muttered. "Whatever Gene. I'm hungry. Can we go eat? There's no food in the kitchen."
