Ba Sing Se's outer wall is the city's thickest layer of protection. The Wall is huge. Easily a hundred meters tall and perhaps thirty meters thick, it is the largest man-made structure in the world. The Wall encircles all of Ba Sing Se, along with the vast agrarian zone and a medium-sized lake. It is considered indestructible and is commonly drawn on maps as a terrain feature. In fact, it has only been breached twice: once by General Iroh, once by the drill.

Between the outer wall and the inner wall of the city is the agrarian zone, a large underdeveloped area that holds wide open plains of land, used mainly for agricultural purposes. Despite its vital wildlife and crops resources, the agrarian zone's primary function is serving as a massive land buffer between the outer wall and the inner wall, where all of the Ba Sing Se residents dwell, widening the gap between invaders and citizens if perchance the outer wall was ever breached. With a self-sustaining supply of food and added protection from siege, the citizens of Ba Sing Se are capable of maintaining daily routine, if not thriving, in the midst of even the most critical of wars.

It was about midday, judging from the height of the sun, and one old man was walking towards the gates of Ba Sing Se. The man was shockingly well built for his age, as if he was in the prime of life still. His strong arms were pulling a heavily loaded cart behind him on the rough dirt roads. Though, for some reason they seemed a bit smoother after he passed. This was the oldest merchant in the world, Greg Boulder. His wares were nothing special, but he could deliver to any town, and that brought him business.

Stopping for a moment he wiped some sweat from his brow. He had been walking since early morning, and Ba Sing Se was just ahead. Under normal circumstances he would walk right in and head for the marketplace, but he had been having troubles with earth nation soldiers lately. Messengers, the thought of them made him laugh. Silly little men who thought themselves important, because they carried a message from the king. The very idea was inane.

Finally he decided to just bite the bullet and walk in. Grabbing onto his cart once more, he walked towards the gates. Ba Sing Se had always been one of his least favorite stops. Both because he could never get through without the king demanding an audience, and because he had to go through countless checkpoints to get his goods onto the trains. And then there was the train ride. Honestly, he couldn’t stand the place. He would be in and out about as fast as he possibly could. Upon reaching the gates he groaned. There were the usual guards, who he motioned to hurry up and check his cargo. But there was also something worse. A messenger was standing there, they must have been waiting, as the man seemed to be walking towards him.

The guards standing on their post at the gates of Ba Sing Se see a man approaching with a cart. As the man got closer with his chart and the guards checked what was on it, they allowed him to pass.
The messenger that was standing there was about to approach the merchant, when the captain of the post recognized the merchant and walked towards him. "Hey, you merchant! Or should I call you Greg?" the captain asked and waited for an answer. He heard the king was trying to get back someone that was very strong to the army, as he recognized the merchant he thought it could only be him.

"Call me whatever you want, but I'm going about my business, not yours." Greg grumbled at the man, lifting his cart and pulling it towards the open gate. Seems like whenever he came here someone just had to stop him. He didn't care either way, just wanted to get on with his work and be done with it.

"Heh...Well Greg, it seems that there is a letter for you from the king as you probably noticed, seeing this messenger looking at you the whole time. Well whether you will read or not I will just give it to you so he will get out of my post." with that said the captain of the post put he letter from the king on Greg's cart and returned to his post.

"I can guess what it says, and I'm not interested." Greg muttered. He was thankful that the man hadn't pushed the matter, and honestly slightly shocked. None the less, he was not a man to try his luck. With a nod to the guards he continued on his way through the gate, and towards the train station. The trains annoyed him, being the only way in and out of town. One of these days he was going to walk straight from the gate to the city, and pave a road as he went. The thought put a smile on his face, nobody would dare stop him if he tried, they might even name it after him. Boulder road... Nah, sounded more like a road block than an easy route to travel.
