Iljimae starring Lee Joon Ki and Han Hyo Joo
Led by megastars Lee Joon Ki (My Girl, Time Between Dog and Wolf) and Han Hyo Joo (Spring Waltz, Shining Inheritance), this well-known drama was a smash hit in 2008, with ratings in the high 20%. Lee Joon Ki won two drama awards for his performance as the titular hero. A fusion historical drama (much like Hong Gil Dong) set during the Joseon dynasty, it tells the story of a figure of legend who rose from humble beginnings to become a hero who fought for the poor and robbed the rich - a man known only as Iljimae.
When his father is killed as a child, Yong takes to the streets and becomes a beggar, searching all the while for what remains of his family. When he finds his sister again, only to see her executed before his eyes, Yong embarks on a mission: revenge. Tattooing himself with the black emblem he saw on the sword of his father's murderer, he sets out on a life of crime. Relying on skills learned from his foster father, a small-time thief, he robs corrupt government officials and gives to the poor, leaving behind each time a painting of a plum tree branch.
Soon, the people embrace him, nicknaming him "Iljimae" for the branch he uses as his mark. When he stumbles across a conspiracy having to do with his father, Iljimae decides to use Eun Chae (Han Hyo Joo), the daughter of a government official, to get the information he needs. He doesn't plan on falling in love with her, however, and soon finds himself torn between his life-long mission to attain revenge and protect the poor versus his forbidden passion for a woman who knows him only as "Iljimae".

This is my first korean drama and by far one of my favorites. The only thing i have wrong with this is: Why diddint Iljimae take his mask of!? XP. I also think the ending is horrible! All in All, its a great korean drama!

I couldn't believe it either. BOTH times she tried to take it off, he stopped her. I mean, really? And after the second time, there was the cut to black so you didn't know if she took it off, then it cuts to the meeting between Yong and her, and she acts as if she knows he's Iljimae, then we find out she DOESN'T. How confusing is THAT?! And at the VERY end, it's, like, 3 years later, and she asks about Yong. Why the heck would she do that? She pretty much despised Yong. He was a nuisance to her. So why is she asking of HIM, when she could be asking for ILJIMAE? I mean, it doesn't make any sense. She'd only ask about him if something good happened between the two. Lie she found out he was Iljimae. But it doesn't tell us that!
And the ending left me kinda empty. I wanted more. And there wasn't any more. So I was at a loss as to what to do, literally. After finishing the final episode, I just sat in front of my computer for the longest time, trying to wrap my mind around the ending. The entire drama just wasn't long enough. 14 episodes will NEVER be enough.

After a while all of the episodes started to blend into one. XD I can't give you an exact one. Though, I did like it when Bong-sun realized that Yong was the boy she knew as a child. The way she acted after that was just adorable. I nearly cried when she disguised herself as Iljimae to help him escape.

I cried too, but not for the fact that she died, just because she did it to save Iljimae, and besides, at the scene when her father supposedly killed her it started buffering and i saw the sword go under her hand. XP

XD Heh. Anyways. Was it just me, or is the actor who played Iljimae, Lee Junki, really cute? What I don't understand is how no one could recognize him as Ilimae. I mean, his hairstyle is pretty unique, don't you think? And his eyes, too. They're not exactly what you'd call normal Korean eyes. Meh.

Jumong was long (81 episodes), and this was way too short, the ending was horribal, and of course, i don't think i will ever stop lamenting over why he didn't take his mask of! I started watching the sequel but i don't like it that much, because it begins in modern times.

Don't hate it just cause of the ending! It was really good! They wrapped up the ending as best they could, but it'll never be enough. It never is. It'll always be like that for every drama.
And Return of Iljimae isn't that bad, actually. After getting past all the modern stuff and actually getting into the drama, it was pretty good. The narrating is kind of annoying, though. But it's pretty good so far. It's not even a sequel to Iljimae. They're totally different stories. Two different versions of the same character.

They usually just use the same names or actors from the first movie. Some sequel are not that bad, but some are plain terrible, ( I have a couple in mind) This one i guess is in the "not bad" section.
