Sometimes you have to kind of die inside...

'Why are we here again?' None of the group seemed to have spoken, but the only human out of the three gave a small frown as she looked up from the small computerized screen in her hand. "I told you already. There's a museum with a lot of different fossils from extinct pokemon and they have a space exhibit that I want to see." She seemed to be addressing the smallest of her two companions, a Lucario. The Aura pokemon's expression was skeptical. 'There's an entire space station in Mossdeep, and we've seen that more times than I can count. What's the difference?" The trainer seemed floored for a moment, then her frown became a little nervous. "I just want to see it," she muttered stubbornly, crossing her arms. The Lucario only gave an exasperated shrug. After trudging through the Viridian Forest, none of them were really in the mood for wasting energy on arguing. The pokemon within hadn't been much of an issue. It was the fact that the place was a virtual maze that left them mentally exhausted. At least Seiko and Kanoro, her Lucario, did. The Scizor that accompanied them seemed no worse for wear. Which was to be expected, as Cavalier rarely ever showed discomfort if he happened to be feeling any. He showed no intention of adding on to the discussion, so when the others fell silent it stayed that way for nearly ten minutes before Seiko looked back up from her PokeNav. "The map says it's really close. We should be seeing it any second." Less than thirty seconds later they turned a corner in the neat dirt road and buildings came into view. 'I guess even you can read a map correctly even once in a while,' Kanoro interjected smugly. Seiko only grinned and quickened her stride, eager to get into town.

The place was small. Smaller even than home, which was enclosed by water and the fact that there was only so much space for the population to expand on Mossdeep. But Pewter City was bright, clean, and Seiko found she really didn't mind how small it seemed. She had never done very well with large or overly populated places. Lilycove was the only exception, as she had been there so often that she knew practically all of the full time residents that lived there. "Alright, so do we go and get a room at the Center now? Or go by the museum first and worry about a room later?" Seiko mused quietly, still walking purposefully down the path leading through the neat little buildings. 'It's still the middle of the day. I vote museum first.' Kanoro glanced up at Cavalier, who gave a short nod in agreement. "I concur." Seiko beamed, hitching her backpack further up onto her shoulders. "Sounds good! The museum is deeper in, the map says right in the most northwestern corner of the city."

Sometimes you have to kind of die inside...

It took approximately five minutes to find the museum, even with Seiko's horrible sense of direction. It was almost completely on the opposite side of the city from where the three had arrived and entered, yet the small size of the city made that irrelevant. A normal person would have been able to easily navigate their way through without the use of a map. Unfortunately, this was Seiko leading the way. Seiko, the one who somehow constantly mixed up north and east on the directional compass. If Cavalier hadn't spotted the building they had been aiming for through an alleyway between two buildings, Seiko would've very likely led them all the way to Mt. Moon. They came up short when they reached the front, a sign informing them of an entrance fee. "Hmmm...I wonder if I have to pay for you guys, too. I only have so much money until Mom said she could send more." She slid her backpack from her shoulders to the ground, crouching there to rifle through its contents. Cavalier was studying the building closely, seemingly thinking about something. He said something that Seiko wasn’t able to catch, as she was still so focused on fishing out her wallet. ”What’d he say?” ’He says he’ll stay outside for now. Doesn’t want to knock something over on accident.’ Seiko gave a distracted nod, arm buried up to her shoulder, before a grin broke across her face and she successfully pulled out her worn pocketbook. ”Alright, so $50…I’ll bring $100 just in case they charge for pokemon, too,” she muttered to herself, pocketing the amount necessary and stuffing the rest back to the bottom of her backpack. She stood again and made to swing it back over her shoulder, but hesitated a moment before turning to Cavalier. ”Could you watch this while I’m inside?” she asked the bug pokemon, hefting the accessory in one hand to show what she meant. He gave a tight nod, reaching forward to take it from her and gingerly clamping one of the shoulder straps in one over large pincer. Seiko smiled thankfully, rolling her shoulder as she closed the distance to the museum entrance. Kanoro followed closely behind her, and Cavalier merely took a seat in front of the same sign from before with his wings buzzing softly behind him to cool the still, slightly warm air. Being a half steel type made him prone to overheating in warm weather such as this.

As soon as trainer and pokemon stepped into the museum, they were hit with a blast of cool air that sent chills up Seiko’s arms. Sure it felt good after being outside most of the day, but the drastic difference in temperature made it feel like an igloo in here. ”Welcome!” Seiko startled and spun around to face the woman behind the front desk who had just addressed them. ”Ah, yeah, uh…one p-person please?” ”Thank you, that will be $50.” Seiko shot a nervous look at Kanoro as she counted out the bills, wondering if she should have mentioned him coming along as well. It would be awful if she just assumed he could and was wrong. Being escorted out by security didn’t sound pleasant. Thank you very much. Enjoy your visit!” Seiko smiled uneasily, taking a slow step towards the exhibits as she watched the attendant at the desk for any negative reaction. When it seemed that the woman didn’t even realize Seiko or Kanoro existed anymore, the trainer grabbed the Lucario’s wrist and quickly pulled him inside. ’Couldn’t you have just asked-?‘ ”Shh!” ’…You realize you’re the only one that can hear me, right?’ Seiko flushed with embarrassment, looking nervously at the rest of the patrons inside. None of them paid the two any mind. "Yes I know that. I was just...I couldn't think with you talking to me!" 'You were panicking. Again.' He gave her a pointed look, making her face redden even more. Thankfully he looked away only a moment later. 'Nevermind. Come on, we might as well do what we came here to.' Seiko nodded quietly, turning away from her pokemon to peer at what seemed to be a large skull through a thick layer of protective glass. She looked curiously to the bronze plaque screwed into the exhibit’s base. ”Kabutops, huh? I think that was mentioned in the evolutionary theory book I saw the other day…or was that Kakuna? Kingler?’ She wandered almost aimlessly around the first floor, stopping to study anything that caught her eye or was even just oddly shaped. And there was a plethora of those. The Aerodactyl skeleton completely amazed her, and she spent nearly an hour trying to measure its wingspan with her own hands. She knew of pokemon that were much larger with a much more impressive set of wings, but this was her first time up close to one. Even if this one was very much dead.

The second floor wasn’t anything new. The space station in Mossdeep was much more impressive, but it was still nice to simply look for the sake of it. It made her a bit homesick, overall. ”Alright come on. We’ve been in here for nearly four hours. Cavalier is going to start wondering what we’re up to.” Kanoro had been following her more or less throughout the building, not sticking to her side but keeping her in sight. Seiko tried smiling at the lady at the front desk as they left, but it came out as more of a strained grimace. She heard Kanoro snicker behind her. Cavalier didn’t seem to have moved the entire time they had been outside, and Seiko wondered if he just might be asleep. He got up quickly enough when he heard them approach, so she supposed not. ”Was the visit satisfactory?” ”Yeah, looks like she saw whatever it was she wanted to see.” The Scizor nodded stiffly, politely handing Seiko her backpack. ”Ah, thanks.” Her eyes scanned their surroundings as she slipped the bag back over her shoulders. She frowned slightly, and Kanoro nudged her in the hip. ’What is it?’ ”I’m just thinking.” Her frown deepened, then she sighed. ”I’m thinking about sleeping in the Pokemon Center tonight and I really don’t want to. Is that weird?” Kanoro shrugged, looking amused. ’For you? No. Not in the least.’ Seiko had the grace to look a little sheepish at this comment, her fingers fidgeting unconsciously. ”Could we just start moving on to another city, maybe? It’s not that late, we can make it pretty far before it gets dark.” She twisted around to pull her PokeNav out of a side pocket, scrolling the screen around nimbly with her fingertip. ”I don’t want to go back through Viridian Forest. So our only other choice is Mt. Moon, I think. No, wait, and Diglett Tunnel. That takes us to Vermillion City. It seems there’s a large harbor there for cruise ships. One of them even goes to Johto!” Seiko brightened visibly. ”Let’s go there! Looks like Diglett Tunnel is much easier to navigate than Mt. Moon anyways.”

Rich Maynard
Pewter City Gym Leader
"A quote? But... Quotes are for grown-ups!"

"Rich, we're here!"
"Yay!"
The minivan opened.
"Now, young man, please be back by supper time, and I've packed you a nice healthy snack--" The aunt was interrupted. "I know, auntie! I'll be good! I'll beat up miserable trainers and tear apart their dreams, one by one, making them cry for eternity!" The boy yelled. "But honey, you forgot your-- Oh, never mind." She drove away. The boy was excited. "Oh, hehe. I'm so excited!" The young boy screamed. "Togepiiii~" The pokemon jumped.

They waited...
And waited...
And waited...
And waited...
Then they went to the restroom...
And they waited...
And then they went to the restroom, again...

"Come on, why isn't anyone coming? It's been 2 minutes already!" The Togepi shrugged.

"I know! We'll play the abc's game! A is for Abomasnow... And T is for... Trainer... Okay, let's have all my friends!" He released 4 pokemon out, and all sat next to him. And all 6 of them, waiting, played. It was easy to keep the child occupied, as he had 4 pokemon to share his love with.

Of course, the time came when they were just so bored, they couldn't take it anymore. They wanted to battle. And the challenger would have to be good, or else he would be mad.
He saw a small, purplish, balloon, with a yellowish "X" shape on it's mouth.

"Loon? Loon! Looooon~"

The songs must have attracted the Driflloon.

"Wow, look everybody, it's a Loon!" He cried.

"Drif?" The Drifloon was confused. What was a Loon?

"What? A Loondrif? Wow, I want a Loondrif!"

"Drifloon?" The pokemon heard the word "Want", and readied a curse.

The kid and his pokemon, screaming, ran inside. The Driflloon chased them around the Gym, knocking down the giant building blocks everywhere.

"AHH! RUN AWAYYYYYYY!!!" Then they kept running, and ran into it again. "Uh, POKEBALL! EAT THAT LOONDRIF!" The pokeball came rushing towards it, but it deflected it.

The Drifloon remembered something a while back, a balloon man giving out balloons, and they popped, or floated away. He thought these were other Drifloon, being hurt. He teared up. "Don't cry... I'll, um... Take care of you! Yes, do you want to be my friend?" The boy showed affectation towards the Drifloon. "Drif..." The Driflloon nodded. "Ok, Loondrif! I caught... A LOONDRIF!" The Drifloon nodded, and all the pokemon but Drifloon got in their pokeballs.

And they kept waiting.

"Raptor?" The Staraptor cam out of it's pokeball. "Staraptor, I wanna go somewhere. Can we go to Pallet Town?" "Rap-tor." The Staraptor nodded. "Maybe there, we can find some trainers, right?" The Staraptor flapped his wings, and picked up the boy. "Whee~" He smiled.

[Rich to Pallet Town]

"And, just remember, I'm like, the only kid my age who is a gym leader, so... Yeah!"

(Rich back from Pallet Town)

As they soared through the air gracefully, (well, the pokemon at least) the child and his pokemon landed on their feet onto the ground. "I guess we gotta wait for some trainers, now. Unless we get a call from someone, we gotta stay put here. Maybe it'll be funner to make some cookies and poffins! And remember, we're gonna have to prepare for anything that gets hit at us, cause this is gonna be fun. And the good thing about being the first gym leader is, that if they get scared and go home, we'll get to battle them and not the other gym leaders. Plus, it's our job to protect the champion's position, just like Brock did. I remember when Brock retired from his job... Quite young, right? Well, let's do this, for cookies!" All the pokemon cheered, and they entered the gym.

"So, everyone, our next fun-filled place is this "Fun-Chia" City!" Little did he know, it was pronounced Fuschia City.

(Back AGAIN from Pallet Town)

Mounted off his Drifloon, the air was a little fierce. The only way Rich knew was because of putting his finger in his mouth, waving it in the air. Sitting on the bench in front of the Gym, his Aunt and Uncle approached.
"Hey, son."
"How was the first day?"
"Hi, Mom and Dad! It was... Well..." He explained that he traveled to about 5 towns.
"WHAT?!"
"Son, we told you--"
"Don't worry, I'm okay! I met Professor Oak, and I got a new friend!"
"Well..."
"Next time, tell us. Now, any challengers?"
"No, sadly. But I think I will have some!"
After chatting, they left, with the boy with his Drifloon.
"Anyone who challenges me... I'll crush them. And hard."

User Image User Image "Neyva...I don't think we're in Johto anymore..." The words gasped out of Dr. Lestrade's mouth as the pair of Rocket Admins stumbled down the hills that surrounded Pewter City. "Of course we're not, you twit. Your damned map led us the wrong way and now we're days, if not weeks off course." Neyva with a hint of anger. Gregory had been disappointing her lately. "I still don't understand what you said about new leadership..." Gregory mumbled underneath his breath. Neyva glared at him before explaining herself, "Giovanni's gone. We have a new Leader. You can't play the 'old friends' card anymore, Gregory. That's my point. The sooner we get back to Johto the quicker we can explain ourselves." Now while Neyva did come off cold to most people, particularly Gregory, but the past few months of partnership have left the Winter Admin a soft spot for the old, gentle admin.

Looking up, Rich saw two rather fancy looking adults-- And approached them.

"Hey, guyssss! You guys look all lost, and stuff! Maybe you're here for a gym battle? Or is there anything else I can do for you?"

The Drifloon smiled. "Drif!" Rich didn't want to scare the folks off-- They could be celebrities or something! "Oh, I forgot to tell you... My name is Rich Maynard, and this is my best friend, Loondrif!" The Drifloon sighed. If they WERE best friends, he would know Drifloon's name. "Oh, right. Drifloon." There it was.

"Welcome to Pewter City, the City of Big Fossils! REALLY big! I mean, one time, I dug up this fossil and it was SOOO huge! My mommy says I'm not supposed to talk to strangers, but if I didn't, I couldn't be a 'leader. So, like, why am I? I mean, really?!" Always full of words, Rich had to be silenced, but it was usually best unless you liked seeing fussy 7-year-olds.

During the travel to Pewter, the young trainer had faced several other Pokemon. The trio battled against Pikachu, Caterpie, and several other types before finally making it through the dense forest. Lexia was proud of her Pokemon's gaining strength, and believed they were ready for the gym awaiting them. The first steps into the small city had a thrill of excitement rushing through the blue-haired girl. Binx, at her side now, was also thrilled. He looked up at his trainer, happy as ever. Nova, in her own way, also showed her approval by ruffling her feathers.

"Let's go to the Poke'center first." Though Lexia was anxious to continue, her Pokemon were tired and needed rest. She wandered up to the building, and entered through the automatic doors. Inside, Nurse Joy was more than happy to take care of the Dratini and Pidgey. Lexia returned her Pokemon to their capsules and handed them over. As she waited, she went over to the phone and called her parents. "Yeah, Binx and I are fine. I've made a few other friends, too. A green talking Pokemon, a Pidgey, and a boy named Kyle." The family talked a while longer, until Joy's peppy voice sprang the news of Lexia's healed Pokemon. The party left the Poke'center, and went on to the Market.

While there, Lexia picked up some supplies and chatted with some townsfolk. She became excited about the museum, and decided to visit after her gym battle. With a wave the girl left, storing her items in her bag and walking towards the gym. Binx and Nova were now in their Poke'balls, also awaiting the challenge ahead. Though being a 'Pokemon Master' wasn't exactly in Lexia's forte', she did want to do everything on her adventure that she could, and that meant battling gyms. And beating them. Now, who could be the gym leader?

As Rich descended from the sky, he spotted a young lady with blue hair. Maybe she was lost? "Hello, Miss! Are you looking for the gym leader? 'Cause, if you are, he's right in that little building right there! Uhm..." He continued. "I'll go tell the boss that a challenger is here!" He skedaddled into the Gym. Little did Lexia know, the gym leader-- Would have many traps laying around. Many flying-type trainers, huge building blocks, and at the end... Well, it would be quite a surprise. Rich set up his pokemon. Hopefully he would win a few battles, since his first battle wasn't a good birthday present. Being 8, Rich felt more mature. He felt stronger. He felt mightier.

As the girl stood in front of the gym, she was suddenly surprised to see a young boy appear in front of her. He seemed full of energy. She laughed at his question. She wasn't really lost, afterall, most gyms were easy to tell where they were. She pointed to the building and grinned. "Nah, we-" Suddenly the boy was excitedly telling her of the building that she was pointing to. With a sigh she nodded and went to explain herself before he suddenly was off again.

"Pid?" Nova tilted her head, and then flew ahead. "Hey, wait up!" The young trainer ran after her Pokemon with the dragon type around her waist. She entered the building, her eyes looking around. There were strange blocks around, and she soon realized they were building blocks. She was in a kid's gym. The girl began putting two and two together, and wondered if that boy outside was the gym leader. She shrugged and continued on.

Her eyes peered around a corner of one of the boxes, and came face to face with a trainer. Laughing awkwardly, she flustered an explanation until she decided he was one of the trainers she had to fight. "Hi, I'm Lexia. This is Binx, and we're ready to battle!"

Rich stared from above. The "trainer" she was talking to was really a piece of cardboard. Rich jumped down into Lexia's sight, holding on to his Drifloon. "Silly girl! You're talking to an inanimate being! Hah!" He pressed a button, revealing a large helicopter that looked like a Drifloon. "Why don't you come in here? It's very... Oh, just get in here already!" He released two pokeballs, out came Unfezant and Staraptor. He pat them both on the heads. "I see you have a Pidgey, huh? Let's just see if it's worth your catch!" He snapped his fingers towards the pilot. "2 minutes!" The pilot smiled and nodded. "Please, come in! Master Rich is waiting for you..." And in a flash, Rich jumped to the main corridor of the helicopter, with plushy red seats and a burning fireplace.

A child. The same boy from earlier. Her eyes slid to the cardboard being she had recently been trying to fight. Her finger reached out and poked it. As it fell, Lexia gave the paper a dry look. On her shoulder, her pidgey scoffed at her. "Shut it, Nova." Lexia muttered. When there was a sudden flash, it caught the trainer's eyes. She noticed the two flying types, and also the Drifloon. A frown caught her expression. They were higher levels than Nova and Binx. How was she supposed to beat them?

""Why don't you come in here? It's very... Oh, just get in here already!" He released two pokeballs, out came Unfezant and Staraptor. He pat them both on the heads. "I see you have a Pidgey, huh? Let's just see if it's worth your catch!""

Nova glared, her whole body sent into a tense rage. "Piiid! GEEEEY!" She narrowed her eyes at the young trainer, and was tempted to peck his head. Lexia placed a hand on the flying bird and shook her head. "He's just a kid." The bird calmed, but still gave the boy an annoyed glance. Behind the boy, Lexia climbed into the large machine. With an awed squeal, she took in the plushy look. Oh, if only she could actually ride this baby around Kanto!

Hearing the boy giving the pilot orders, Lexia once more felt her suspicions rise about him actually being the leader. Why else would he be given such permission? She'd go along with it for now. Binx slid from her waist and curled up into the fireplace. Being the reptilian dragon he was, his cold blood enjoyed the nice warmth. Nova stayed close to her trainer. The bird had a score to settle with this kid.

Lexia walked over and plopped down on a seat, waiting for the leader to make his arrival. She rolled her head on the back, surprised at how much had already happened that day. Picking her head back up, she looked over to the way that strange kid had exited. "Sure wonder who is this gym leader." Lexia rolled her eyes and propped her face against the palm of her hand as she leaned forward in a slouching manner.

When Lexia walked in, she would be able to see two pokemon; Drifloon and Togepi. Behind them stood Rich. "Hello, Lexia, is it? It's a pleasure to finally meet you!" Suddenly, the Helicopter vibrated. "Heeeeeeelllllllooooooooo, everyone! This is your cap'n speakin', and we have just launched from the ground, meaning any electronics may be turned on at this time, and you may also detach your seatbelts. Please, do NOT smoke! There are young minds and lungs at work! We would like to welcome Ms. Lexia, and in honor of your presence, we have prepared a special snack for you. Please, if you are allergic to nuts, please tell us! Enjoy your "Nutty Buddy" Cheesecake Ice Cream! Oh, and today's specials are Oran Berry Juice and Lava Cookies, fresh from Hoenn! Once again..." Unfeazant arrived with snacks, delivering them to everyone, with a speaker that would say "Enjoy your flight!" "Anyways, I'm Rich Maynard, the Pewter City Gym Leader! I love Flying types, so I'm so happy you brought that Pidgey! I come from a rich corporation, that manufactures airborne vehicles, flights to space, and studies gravity. Thus, I love flying types! My rules... We don't have any... Yet! You get to create them for the battle!" He sat down, continuing. "So tell me about you! What do you do? Do your parents work for the radio company? Or do they work with Oak? Or do they manufacture Glass?"

Sitting there, Amelia noticed the Drifloon and Togepi. The little egg was adorable, and the Drifloon was quite...eerie in a sense. She shrugged it off and rubbed her arms as she waited to be greeted. The boy walked in once more. As Lexia was about to ask what was the hold up, he finally admitted to him being the gym leader. "Nice meeting you too." She stood to hold out her hand, but stopped as the floor under her suddenly vibrated, and a voice came over the intercom. It was the pilot, and he was speaking about food, and allergies, and barely paid any attention to what he said.

After the voice went away, another bird flew out and plopped the spoken snacks onto the chair that Lexia had previously been sitting on. "Thanks." She nodded to the Pokemon, and then nodded to her own. They pushed the snacks aside; eating before a battle could cause cramps. Well, not really, but they all had that strange idea in mind. Hearing that they created their own battles, the young trainer began to plan them ahead in her mind. The bird then flew back over to the arm of one of the seats. After sticking her tongue out at her own flying type, the girl turned back to the leader.

"Okay. Well, I only have two Pokemon, so do you want to make this a two-on-two battle?" She asked. Both of her Pokemon seemed rather excited, especially Binx. "Draaaaa!"
