So, I'm not sure if this has already been addressed or not. I've read all the threads, but perhaps I missed it.
Anyways, my source of confusion is this:
I was arguing with this one woman about abortion. (No, duh. Who saw that coming? blaugh ) The conversation went something like this.
Her: "You're not pro-life. You're taking away the mother's life!"
Me: ".......how?"
Her: "It's a whole 18 years taken from her life."
Me: "Heard of adoption?"
Her: "Well that's STILL nine months!!"
Me: "Oh...woop-dee-doo. Well you're pro-death."
Her: "I am not! It's pro-choice!"
Me: "Pro-CHOICE should mean the CHOICE to keep your PANTS on."
Her: *Gasps* "That's an abomination!"
Me: ".........to what?"
Her: "*Huffs and puffs.* You're a complete and utter imbecile." *Stomps off*
Man, needless to say I was SO confused. Did I really offend her? I don't know how. Am I just thick headed and too stubborn to see what I said horrible? oo; Tell me?

Maybe, but I am more inclined to think she just gets huffy easily. If she's calling you an imbecile she's not looking at her own words.

That woman is a moron. We're taking 9 months? Yeah sure, right around the time we steal pregnant women drug them and force them into a 9 month hibernation, forcing IV's into their arms and uterus's so that they're fed. Maybe even a little extra nutrition for the baby's so they can grow strong and possibly possess super human abilities.

DOn't you see? you ARE an utter imbecile. I mean, come on. Face up to responsibility? Why not take it out on someone else? Get with the program and kill babies so you don't have to own up to anything. Jeez. Some people.... rolleyes

I'm being highly sarcastic. In case you couldn't tell. But she probably doesn't blame you. After all, you're a oppressed woman. You let your mother and men all over the world tell you that you can't have sex and that if you do and get pregnant, you need to actually do the right thing.

Lol, sorry. I got this pm once from someone who saw a prolife sig on my thingy...before I joined here I think. She was telling me to stop letting my boyfriend tell me what to think about abortion. I told her he was prochoice. she said more men should be and to stop listening to my mother. I told her my mom refused to speak to me about abortion for years because she didn't want to admit I was old enough to know about horrors like that. She told me to stop letting my religion rule me. I told her to get a life. Mm, she didn't like that very much.... She shouldn't blame me though, I'm a poor oppressed female in America! Because of course, women have no rights here. What I found funny is this was someone who was opposed so much to going into Iraq. I felt like giving her a few links on how the women there were/are treated.

I honestly don't get the 9 months thing; it's not like that's really a humongous amount of time. It goes by very quickly. (And I can speak from experience--as I've said many times before I'm sure--I've done the 9-months thing twice now, and honestly the biggest headache about either of them had nothing to do with being pregnant... it had to do with trying to write my undergraduate thesis on a topic so obscure I couldn't find the required number of sources on the subject)

Mom laughs at them and says, that's the easy part. Even though my bro and I were both fighting to come out three months before we were supposed to. is that possible? lol. and she could barely eat anything, couldn't keep anything at all down. And after all that work, all she got was me. Poor woman.

Some pregnancies are easy, some are hard. The thing is, the other side makes them all sound oh so painful and difficult. rolleyes It -is-, after all, the point of view that most suits their cause.

My mom barely got morning sickness, she worked until the day before she went into labour and she got pregnant with my sister only 7 months after I was born.

My mom was pregnant six times. 1 was born premature (and unfortunately died) and the other 5 currently run rampant around the house (I'm the oldest).

Back when I (and my sister) was born they didn't have the uh....*snaps fingers searching for the word* you know...the drug that takes away the labor pain? So mom was forced to just grit her teeth and bear the pain.

My sister (the second oldest) was a real pain in the neck during her development. She came after the one who died. So I'd bet my parents were a little concerned this time around. My mom got so sick she was bedridden for weeks and was on medication (my sis has these odd white patches on her teeth as a result of that). The docs actually encouraged her to abort because she was so sick and death was a possibility. But since death wasn't certain, my mom carried to term. My parents named the girl "Victoria" because getting her into this world was a victory in itself. smile

Surprisingly enough when my other three siblings were born she refused the drug because she saw it as an unneccessary risk. The way she talks about it, it sounds painful....but it doesn't sound like the kind of pain that makes you want to cuss at the doctors or kill your husband or anything like that.

Meanwhile the secretary at the office I used to work at said that she barely had any labor pains at all. In fact when she had her first kid she wasn't even aware she was in labor until after the water broke.

Calling a person 'pro-death' and telling them the only choice they have is to keep their pants on IS pretty offensive.

Okay, so you don't like abortion. Big deal. A lot of pro-choicers aren't wild about the idea either. That doesn't mean that we tell people their choice is either children or chastity, becuase it's not that simple. Even when birth control wasn't available, it wasn't that simple.

The idea of being pro-choice is that you let the woman decide for herself, NOT that Congress or the President or a big mob of people like this guild should make that decision for her. Now, if she still wants it, wonderful. If not, then she has that option.

It's possible to still be pro-life personally and pro-choice politically; i.e. you wouldn't have one yourself, but you don't want to keep that option from others. Kerry is one of those types; he's not a hypocrite or a flip-flopper, he just knows that there's a difference between what his religion has him think for himself, and what he knows is the right choice for the country.

Of course he's not a flip-flopper.

Vote: Yes, go to Iraq.
Speech: The war in Iraq is wrong
Speech: The war in Iraq is right
Speech: I'd do a better job.

Vote: No, don't spend money on better equipment for troops
Speech: Troops, your president isn't interested in your safety and I am.

not to mention meeting with the enemy during wartime. Then again, I guess he knows he can do better than bush because he's met with bin laden in France and they've worked out a treaty involving the enslavement of america.

heh, jk there. a bit.

And it offends lifers that over 40 million babies (not to mention the women) have died since Roe v. Wade. So hey, it's offensive either way.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 25, 2004 3:40 pm

okay, off-topic for a mo...

The man voted the way he did in the war because he thought he could still trust the president about Iraq. A lot of congress did. A lot of congress now realises they were duped by false reports and basically lies upon lies. the difference is that he didn't forget why we'd gone in there instead of changing his story like a bunch of Republicans did about the rationale for Iraq.

The bill he voted on with x amount of money for troops that got voted down was a carte blanche bill that DIDN'T specify how much money was going to troops, or even where the money was going. That's not 'supporting the troops' one way or another, that's demanding to know where the cash is going.

As for the '40 million abortions' bit... I don't think it's fair to say that many would have lived had abortions not been available. you have poor neonatal care, birth defects, lack of food/medical care, etc.

alright, I'll put it this way. it offends Lifers that in the US alone, 40 million babies have died due to abortion. Meaning, they were killed. Because to us, abortion is homicide.

I'm very pro-equal rights and I find the thought of anyone advocating abortion and labelling it as an "equal rights" movement, offending. It's discriminatory towards someone based on age, place of residence and all the other reasons choicers give. Not to mention that the feotus' can't even fight back.

How can you advocate equal rights when you're so blatently discriminating against the unborn? I'm not discriminating because women get pregnant biology is. That's why I'm for birth control, fight biology all you want, try and force it to give you equal rights. I don't care, but the moment you decide that your wants over ride another's rights, that's when discrimination comes into play.
