Faeriecraft
Treading the Path of Faerie Magic

Excerpts and notes from the book by Alicen Geddes (A Fairy Priestess) and Neil Ward

I remember from when I was growing up and under parental rule how hard it was to get information and read certain books. So this will be part of a series of lessons by me to offer information from books that I now own.

"Faeriecraft brings us wonderful reminders of the importance of connecting with the fairies and with nautre....The faeries are the environmentalist angels, and the more that we believe in them, the more power they have to clean up our world."
-- Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.

"Just follow the first and only rule of faeriecraft and you will get along just fine.

Rule one: Normal rules do not apply"

"I serve the fairy queen, To dew her orbs upon the green; The cowslips call her pensioners be; In their gold coats spots you see; There be nobles, fairy favours, In those freckles liver their savours; I must go seek some dew-drops here And hang a pearl in every cowslip's ear'. - Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

WHO ARE THE FAERIES

Enchanters and Enchantresses - also known as Tempters and Temptresses or the Faerie Priests and Priestesses. They are human beings who are aligned to the faerie race by way of their destiny, faerie ambassadors in teh human world who have been bestowed with psychic or empathic gifts by the faeries. They are believed to rest in Faerie Land after their death.

Creatures and Demons - thought to be aligned to the faerie race. These include a wide spectrum of beasts: unicorns, centaurs, trolls, urchins and dragons. They can be spiritual, beautiful, benevolent or nasty.

The Elemental Faeries - the spirits of nature which dwell in every living thing upon the Earth.

The Faerie or Elfin People - race of magical beings who dwell in subterranean mounds, rocks or faerie islands that are shrouded from view underwater. They are usually silent, unless they choose otherwise. There are two types of fey. The Trooping Faeries who are the aristocracy and said to be descendents of ancient demoted pagan gods; and the solitary faeries who are of a wilder nature than their Trooping ocusins and are the peasntry beings.

The Elemental Faeries

The Winged Sylphs - elementals of air. Coming from the Greek word silphe, meaning "butterfly" or "moth". Some have wings. They are light as a feather, quick, flighty and represent freedom of the spirit, thought and emotion. They are celestial messangers to the place between worlds. They shapeshift to fit their environment. They please themselves and their fluid form allows them to transcend physical reality. Said to be small and transparent. Have an affinty for birds.

The Entrancing Salamanders -elementals of fire. They inhabit every flame and soar and dance through the air as sparks and streaks of light in hues of red, orange and gold. They reside in fire and their energy is transient and transmutable. They tend to be quick and unpredictable. They are said to be able to hypnotize people. They are magical, sacred, hazardous and revered. Salamanders are symbols of your own life force, of passionate feelings, the spark of ideas and creativity, the spirit of aliveness and the kick you get from doing something impulsive. They have flaming hair and personalities.

The Beguiling Undines - the Priests and Priestesses of water. Dwell either inland or in salt water. Generally portrayed as female. They govern the emotions that run deep within us. On the surface it reflects earthly reality but underneath it is entirely different. Water is the looking glass into the Faerie Land. They should be treated with respect since they are facets of their element. One minute the sea can be beautiful and calm and the next it can be dangerous. So just be careful when working with them but don't neglect them since they can lead you on journeys to illuminate your inner self adn can reflect your emoitions so that you can see them more clearly.
Undine's can be beautiful and alluring young woman in human form with long, luxurious hair. The saltwater elementals are known for their merpeople. They have exquisite singing voices and have been said to lure mortal men as their lovers.

The Wise Gnomes - elementals of earth - that means caves, crystals, gems, roots and sand. They are perceived to be wise guardians of the earth. Believed to live for a 1000 years. Males are more common then females and have the form of small old men. Other earth elementals include brownies, pixies and goblins. The gnomes tend to be dependable the others mischievous and tricky. Earth elementals such as the knockers are also "changeful" in nature. THese dwell in mines and are respected by the miners. They are so called because they knock warning at times of danger in the mines.

WHAT IS FAERIECRAFT?

It is, essentially, the merging of the faerie fiath and the practice of the craft. It can be a pathway that doesn't have a teacher, guru or group. It is a path for everyone.

THE FAERIE KINGDOM

"Every country and sometimes region has its own race of faeries, each with its own hierarchy, peculiarities, customs and legends."

Many of these kingdoms mirror the society that is around them, however with a higher sense of spirituality and with the magical powers.

FINDING THE PATH

Most of the time, it is not about you finding the path, it is about the path finding you.

There are many ways to the Faerie Land because this allows you to enter by a personal route for yourself.

"The faerie way is all abotu your individual relationship to the fey and the particular aspect of their world that you are drawn to. The faeries will come to you in the way that is appropriate for you and you only."

There are many different ways that the faeries will contact you. Seeing one is the rarest form. Other ways include, intuitive feelings, inspirations, experiences of the spiritual in nature, meditation, dreams, visualization and the feeling of being touched by them through art and literature.

FINDING YOUR OWN PATH

The faeries will guide you. But first you must invite them. You do that by building yourself an faerie altar. (See next post).

* Just to add, the faerie path can run along side most other paths in the pagan world. It will not conflict.

ALTAR

The bridge of intent in this world....

Your altar can be in your home or your garden.

"The reason for having a faerie altar in your daily environment is so that you have a physical focus of the unseen realm in your home, your own personal window on Faerie Land if you like."

Your altar can be created in any room of your house and can be as small or large as you like. However, the altar should be in the North room of the house because North is the most sacred direction in faeriecraft. North is also sacred to to pagans of ancient times and is home of the Pole Star. It is a place of magic and mystery. If North is unavailable than use the center of the room or garden.

"Particularly relevant to faeriecraft si that the north point is the place of Caer Arianrhod or Caer Siddi, home ot the Mistress of the Otherworld Tower, Arianrhod, moon and spinning Faerie Queen or goddess. Also known as the Spiral Castle, it is the power place magicians visit to be initiated and where the creative among us go to receive inspiration through dreams and the subconscious. It is often also the sacred castle where the dead can rest between incarnations."

HOME ALTAR

Decorating your altar:
You have endless possibilities....
You can explore the Otherworldly route and use sparkling objects: Christmas tree lights, ornaments of faeries, crystals, feathers and beautiful magical tools such as a wand. Sprinkle glitter on the altar cloth and hang some faerie wings.

Or you can take the earthy route: use branches, sea shells, snail shells, bark and anything that speaks to you of the magic of nature.

For winter: you can add pictures of Jack frost and the Snow Queen, items of white or silver such as decorated branches or candles. Hang snow faeries.

Do NOT put items of metal on your altar, faeries don't like metal. So instead of an athame use a wand.

GARDEN ALTAR

Special places to build the faerie altar outside are on moss covered stumps, under willows, in the middle of a wild flower bed, in wood, or next to a stream and in the branches of an elder tree. Use ribbons, wind chimes, bells, shells, egg cups and thimbles.

If you build an altar in the wild, beyond your garden, it can only be temporary and should be taken with you when you leave. If you do leave something behind, make sure that it is biodegradable.
