Considered by many to be one of the best movies ever made and also as Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa's best work, Ran is masterful retelling of the tragedy of King Lear — itself regarded as one of the best tragedies in the history of human literature — in feudal Japan.
I love this movie: it's perfect, really, in the telling of the story, the development of the characters, and the unfolding of treachery into madness and death. The image links to a fan-made preview of the film that does it great justice, even though the music isn't quite my cup of tea. Read both the IMDB and Wikipedia articles on the movie, too.
Showtimes for the Cinema 21 running of the restored twenty-fifth anniversary edition haven't been posted yet, but I'm definitely going with my ♥ moon goddess ♥ and advise you guys to check this movie out. If I have the money I may very possibly be willing to come a second time for an actual meet-up viewing, though that depends on the state of my wallet and how many people are interested.
PS: the costumes were all made by hand, taking two years.
