I have not finished this book yet, but after reading just the first few chapters, I think this book should be required reading in high school. Written by Rachel Carson, the book is a forty year old (but still so relevent) look at the danger human beings are putting our environment in, and the dangers it is providing us with in return.
Because I now work at a 'natural market' (health food store), I was already a bit aware of some of the things I read about in the book. But I had no idea how far some things like pesticides really went. When I looked up some of the concerns in the book on current web pages and in current magazines and other books, I was even more suprised to see that Silent Spring doesn't blow anything out of proportion. And everything in the book existed over forty years ago - in 1962. It's really just scary - and motivating - to think about how much worse things have become today.
So go read the book! Or better yet, if you've already read it, tell me what you think.
