You know what's really sad? When you're not even a fan of a childish anime about a children's card game, but by watching LittleKuriboh's Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, you're suddenly inspired to write a fanfiction. Moreover, a serious fanfiction.
Alas, this seems to happen to me all too often. I don't want the OC I came up with to end up being a Mary-Sue, so I need your help! I have two ideas I'm playing with (and may end up writing them both). One is a comedy, and the other is a little more along the lines of sci-fi/horror.
First, I'll introduce the ideas in question, then go on to the OC.
First up: the comedy
The comedy idea has very little do do with Duel Monsters. Rather, it involves a guest speaker who informs Domino High about the warning signs of someone who may be depressed or suicidal, and that by looking for these warning signs, they can possibly save a life. (Some of these signs include sleeping during the daytime and not getting sleep at night, not wanting to socialize, not going out very often, etc.)
My character, who I will introduce in a later post, fits many of the "depressed" checklist requirements, and all of a sudden, the previously under-the-radar, Duel Monsters-illiterate "Chuugoku" is being bombarded by well-wishing canon characters trying to "save her from herself". (One of the methods, used mainly by Yuugi, is an attempt to teach her Duel Monsters, because that always makes him happy. Unfortunately, the OC sucks at it. I mean, it takes a special skill to be defeated in three turns or less without fail...)
However, in reality, the OC is trying to write a novel (her first novel, and it's going to be FANTASTIC, she insists), and has the biggest case of writer's block EVER. She spends all night trying to write, only to not get any sleep and kill a couple hundred trees and pencils in the process. Thus, she conks out during class and has to be splashed in the face before afternoon kendo practice.
I don't really know where I would go from there, though in the end, the OC finally writes her novel. And because I can't just leave it at that, I reveal in the epilogue that it gets rejected. Fifteen times. She goes on to write more novels, all of which are rejected, and dies after choking on a pretzel (Disgaea reference). Her novels were later published posthumously in an anthology titled "Worst Fiction Ever Written". XD
In the next post: the horror/sci-fi version.

Second, the horror: This concept is a little different, but may have been done before (I don't know, not being a very good fan). It's also a part of that whole "soft crossover" deal I do, mainly with Persona 3.
This story centers around two things, the time between midnight and midnight and one second, called the Dark Hour (yes, stolen from Persona 3), and a thing I made up (or at least, I think I made up) called a Century Item.
Now, the Dark Hour was created via an experiment gone wrong some twenty years ago, again, by a Millennium Item holder who, although he could not harness the ability of whatever item he had at the time, did catch a teensy glimpse of the Shadow Realm and instead of running a mile like any sane person would do, decided, "Hey, wouldn't that be a great electricity source?" So he set up an experiment where he tried to use machines to simulate that power and, well... there was an explosion... and stuff got destroyed... and the Dark Hour was created.
What is the Dark Hour, other than something that occurs at a certain time? Well, for starters, no modern technology works during the Dark Hour. That's why it's, well, dark. Second, all the water (even the stuff you can't see) turns to blood. Third, that's when monsters show up. Now, these are incredibly weak monsters, but still a bit of a challenge for a defenseless citizen... So, everyone except some exceptionally unlucky folks are "transmogrified" into coffins for that time period. And even people who survive the Dark Hour end up forgetting it like a bad dream. Oh, and as the moon gets fuller, the monsters get stronger. Going out during Dark Hour on a full moon night is an incredibly bad idea. You're almost guaranteed to get killed without some special protection.
Now for Century Items. As you can guess, a Century Item is an object that is magically powerful and created by a Millennium Item holder. Century Items do not have the insanely strong, Shadow Realm-binding abilities of the originals. Rather, they are either "blessed" or "cursed" (known in Egypt as being Black or White, respectively). Even in more recent times, new Century Items appear (usually created by malicious M.I. holders like Melik) with various interesting but not comparatively strong powers. Sometimes, Century Items are "broken", which means they accidentally came in contact with the Shadow Realm at some point and can drag their owners into the Dark Hour every night, whether they are good or bad.
One example of a "white" or cursed Century Item is the infamous Monkey's Paw. For those of you who don't know or can't remember what that is, it's the paw of a monkey capable of granting three (or, in my version, five) wishes. However, these wishes are always twisted around so that they go badly for the wisher. This was intended to teach nosy or envious people not to mess with fate and be grateful for what they have.
Now, the OC in question owns a "black", or blessed, Century Item from ancient times (but doesn't realize it or really even care). Her item is a stone knife, but it can turn into a sword or pole arm depending on the situation. However, her item is also "broken", and every night, she has "nightmares" about the Dark Hour, and wakes up after midnight, unable to sleep. But this doesn't come up until MUCH later.
The story starts around High Obon, a time when ghost stories are popular in Japan. Yuugi and Co. have gotten together to swap ghost stories, per tradition, and the story of the school once being destroyed in an explosion and rebuilt comes up. Of course, everyone knows the story (and every school has its share of "mysteries" ), but it's Obon, and the whole story must be retold. So it's explained that some mysterious explosion happened at the school some twenty years ago, and while about ten or so adults died, none of the students were killed (though many went to the hospital). It was far too large to be a chemistry lab explosion, or so they say, and the cause of the explosion remains unknown to this very day...
Another of the stories is about a "revenge website", where you just type in someone's name and the very next day, your revenge has been gotten. No questions asked, no getting your hands dirty... It turns out later that it's run by Strega and they use their items with "un-transmog" abilities to carry out the hits during Dark Hour.
Anyway, they start a project in which they investigate the mysteries of the school, and at some point become aware of Dark Hour. My OC remains a relatively minor character until then, only showing up occasionally and not doing much. Eventually, they run into each other during Dark Hour, and the group Strega shows up... and stuff happens...
Oh, and my OC gets to die a senseless death for the sake of plot advancement.

Both sound like really good story ideas, especially the horror story idea.

Well, the character might change your mind... Remember, I'm a habitual Sue-author trying desperately to make a believable character for once (or, rather, twice. I've actually written ONE other OC that people said they could connect with, and that was for a Naruto fic featuring Hidan). (I drew her in one of my school notebooks and it looks a LOT better than a tektek avatar, but my scanner is on the blink, so I can't show it to you. crying ) Name: Hong Meiling (紅 美鈴) (mispronounced "Kurenai Misuzu") Age: 17 Gender: female Race: Chinese Grades: very poor Hong Meiling is an only child from Hong Kong, who moved to Japan after elementary school. Thus, she's been in the same class as the canon characters for awhile, but they have no common interests and aren't very familiar with one another. Everyone in the school just calls her "Chuugoku" (China) because they had trouble remembering/pronouncing her name back in middle school. In fact, not even her friends remember her real name half the time, and everyone just keeps calling her China. In both versions, she stays awake all night, which causes her to be exhausted and sleep through class the next day, causing her low grades. In fact, she has so little energy that sometimes she can't even get up to get lunch, and has to bum a rice ball or curry bun off of someone just to muster enough energy to get out of her seat. The reason for her lack of sleep is different for the comedy and the horror story, though. In both versions, China is in the kendo club, and was once a member of the team (before being kicked off for bad grades). Kendo club has morning and after school practice, but China usually either sleeps through or spends the entirety of morning practice in a daze (unless one of the other club members splashes her with cold water). In the horror story, when she's awake and thinking properly, she's almost as good as the team captain. In the comedy, she's kinda wimpy (in fact, she's surprisingly wimpy for her appearance in both versions, but at least in the horror version, she has one redeeming quality). I'm trying to keep her as un-Sue as possible...

I read the thread. lol All my friends hate OC's, too. And that's all I seem to be able to write. Maybe I ought to give up the whole "fanfiction" thing and stick to fanart. XD
I think I'll probably do the horror one. I've resolved not to let Meiling take center stage with all the canons following her around (which would automatically make her a Mary Sue), but remain a supporting to semi-main in the story (and not take Yuugi's place, heaven forbid).
She will not be paired with anyone (because I suck at that sort of thing anyway), and will get killed off or otherwise taken out of action partway through... I mean, it's horror, so someone has to get the worst end of the deal, and I can't exactly kill of the mains and stay in good standing with readers, so...
Anyway, I'll post a link when I write the first chapter and folks can check it out and tell me what I've done wrong this time...
