Lizzie looked around. There were people here. Other people. What on earth was she going to do? Lizzie had been always been painfully shy. Taking a deep breath, she walked into the forest. Pulling out the Odyssey, she sat against a tree and began to read, hoping with all her heart that no one would notice her.

Lizzie watched from afar as the two people who had been in the forest left. Breathing a sigh of relief, she once more immersed herself in the travels of Odysseus.

Jake Jake began to walk into the forest. He was bored and wanted adventure. As he walked he saw a pretty girl reading a book. He walked closer and said "Hi."

Lizzie looked up, startled. A boy was talking to her. He had said hi. How on earth was she supposed to respond to a boy saying hi? Lizzie scanned her mind. In the Trojan War, people didn't say hi. They just killed each other. After a long pause, Lizzie said, "Hi," very timidly.

"Um... I'm Lizzie," she said, shaking his hand. Saying hi had apparently been socially acceptable.

Lizzie's eyes lit up. "The Odyssey, by Homer. I love Homer. I like the Iliad too but the Odyssey is better. And I also love Shakespeare. And I love Tennyson. I can recite The Lady of Shalott from memory. On either side the river lie, Long fields of barley and of rye, That clothe the world and meet the sky; And thro' the field the road runs by..." Lizzie stopped. She wasn't sure what would be socially acceptable in this sort of situation but quoting 19th century poetry probably wasn't the best thing to do.

"No," Lizzie said quickly. "I don't do acting. Standing in front of lots of strangers isn't my thing. I read poetry to myself, not in front of other people."
