Sorry I haven't been around much, guys. College stress and midterms combined with dental surgery does a lot to a person.
Even though I'm not too big on most anime, I love animation in general, and Hayao Miazaki never fails to impress me. Most of his movies are very well known, and for good reason. They're beautiful.
But what about Porco Rosso? No one ever seems to talk about that one. Personally, next to Spirited Away, it's my favorite of his films.
For those who don't know, the movie came out in 1992 and starred the titular Porco, a fighter pilot whose face was turned into that of a pig by a curse. It took place in our world, post WWI, and involved heartwarming stories, fun characters, and some awesome high-flying dogfights.
I have no idea why no one talks about it. It can't be because of its age, since people still talk about Nausicaa and that movie is older (and in my opinion, a much weaker film). Is it because it doesn't have a typical Miyazaki female protagonist? Because there is a female supporting character who gets a fair bit of screentime. Is it because everyone was offended by Curtis, who was a cool character despite being an offensive stereotype? Did everyone just not like the movie?
Please discuss. I'll try to be around more to chat here and elsewhere. Right now, I've got some packing to do...
