Is there a way to knit a sweater in one piece, without knitting the sleeves apart and sewing them to the body?

You'll have to do it separate.

You could pick up the stitches in the sleeve holes and knit shoulder to wrist, or just put the stitches from the arm hole on stitch holders as you go (I've never made a sweater, I'm not sure how well that would work, but it's an idea ^_^)

What are stitch holders exactly? I usually use other needles I have on hand to hold live stitches.

They kinda look like big safety pins, minus the coil and the sharpness.

What she said! xD You can always use a contrasting color of scrap yarn to hold the stitches if you don't have a stitch holders.
