A flurry of activity announced Blake's arrival at the hospital. A small group of nurses steered her down the corridors to an examination room. The radio chatter from the EMTs still rang in her ears. Her overbearing mother was scurrying alongside the gurney, wringing her hand and repeating that she would be alright.
It had been just an away game, nothing special. The opposing team had a good defense, but their offense was nothing. Blake could outrun all of them combined. But that defense. She didn't see them coming from her peripherals, until the two linemen were upon her. Then Blake was face down in the dry grass and couldn't breathe. They lifted off of her and she rolled over, football nearly wedged under her shoulder pads, and watched the stars drift in her vision.
No one had let her sit up once she admitted to feeling dizzy and couldn't focus on faces. The trainers had carried her off the field, the EMTs had strapped her to a stretcher, the nurses had moved her from the stretcher to a gurney. The fluorescent lights flared in her vision as she passed beneath each. The word 'concussion' slipped through her garbled thoughts, like she was eavesdropping on a broken record, it was repeated from person to person as she closed her eyes and tried to let herself lose consciousness. Her mother wouldn't let her.

Blake's eyes rolled open and she stared at the ceiling, trying to figure out why she was inside a building. She could remember the air being knocked out of her and being practically thrown down on the field, but that felt like hours ago. Her ribs hurt, as did her head. Sitting up, Blake looked around the hospital room.
The curtains over the window had holes in them, sunlight shone through in slivers of gold. Dust motes drifted through the light, and large hoofprints were visible on the dirt and dust covering the floor. A board on the wall by the door had finger-writing in the dirt, but she couldn't make it out. Blake slipped out of the bed, bare feet hardly touching the cold tile floor as she crept closer to see the board.
The door opened and her mother rushed in. "Oh, Winry. What are you doing out of bed?" She caught Blake by the arm and tried to guide her back into the bed. Blake sat on the edge and looked around once again. The room was clean, light from a crack in the blinds shining off of the pristine floor and into her eyes. Blake curled up in the bed and pressed a hand to her forehead. "What happened to the room?" she said quietly.
Her mother explained to her what happened from when she was tackled, to her arrival in the hospital room the night prior. But it didn't answer her question at all.

Blake listened to her mother until she felt like she was going to vomit from all of the worry. No, no, that wasn't just her annoyance with her mother acting up. She was going to be sick.
Bolting from the bed without a word of warning to her mother, Blake dove into the bathroom and flung the door closed just in time to splatter whatever she had eaten before being admitted across the counter and the toilet. If anything, she had been aiming for the toilet. She dropped to her knees on the cold tile and continued to heave until her vision swam and her chest and stomach ached with the effort. Tears streamed down her face.
"Winry? Honey, are you okay? I'm going to call a nurse." Her mother knocked at the door. Blake rolled her eyes and slammed a hand on the counter to regain her mother's attention.
"I'm fine." there was a pause as she continued to vomit. "Don't call any nurses, dammit!"
Blake's yell was answered by silence. She ignored it until her stomach had purged itself and she could stand without growing dizzy. Leaving the counter and bathroom a mess, Blake slipped out the door and leaned against the wall.
