I thought it would be fun to assign a new vent topic each week for general discussion. We'll start on Monday and end on Sunday. Whomever is the first to start a weekly topic, that will be the topic of the week, but do try to give others a chance. So without further ado, I'll begin.

Celebrity culture: With the Academy Awards having been presented last night, I couldn't help but be reminded of how much I dislike celebrity culture. The media hypes performers and tells us what's popular, and "cool". I didn't watch Sunday's award show, but it became the main topic of discussion among nearly every media outlet. Thus in order for me to avoid hearing about it, I'd have been required to sit in the bathroom all day with my eyes shut and fingers planted deep in my ears. From winners, to losers, to fashion, every aspect of the show and attending celebrities was discussed today. I fail to see why these performers are viewed as god-like entities. I've had the opportunity to meet a number of celebrities, even had one over at my house, but I can only recall being remotely "starstruck" on one instance. That was when I spoke to my favorite singer over the phone. Everyone else, I viewed as being just another person who I've seen or heard of. Nothing special, just a person who got lucky.

I enjoy movies, music and other forms of entertainment media as much as the next person, but I don't obsess over the performers. Why should we care what these people do in their spare time? Who cares that Angelina Jolie adopted another kid? That woman collects children on her vacations, like normal people collect shot glasses. Does it really matter what celebrity couples are separating, or who is dating someone new? Does it affect your life? Does it inspire the way your day will unfold? Then why does the media make it such an issue? I just don't get it.

I can't say I get it, either. Honestly, celebrities are given demi-god status, but they're only human. They're just like the rest of us, but for the fact that they got a break in moving pictures or music or what have you and enough people liked them to send them to the top.

I'll admit to finding Antonio Banderas to be a very attractive, talented man (his singing... I never knew he could sing opera until I happened across it on Youtube; he sang the Phantom theme with Sarah Brightman), and Johnny Depp to be a man of many faces and characters, but hell, I don't care what they do in their private lives. Sure, I know that Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter are together and that they have two kids, but it's mere trivia. A fun fact (and a joke between myself and my younger sister that they had 'cartons'; Carter+Burton=Carton).

But really, I don't give a flying flit that Jolie's adopted again. Good for her, I s'pose. I don't care who's breaking up any more than I care that the kid I sat next to in school broke up with their sweetheart. People pitched fits that RPattz and KStew were supposedly dating in real life and that the lead couple of True Blood were not. Why? I have no idea.

If anything, I'll call it the human nature's nosy aspect. The part of us that desires juicy gossip about people we'll never meet so we can judge them. Because, as humans, we love to judge things. That aspect shows up less in some of us and more in others, but I believe it to still be there.

Humans are a very strange species.
