I thought it would be fun to assign a new vent topic each week for general discussion. We'll start on Monday and end on Sunday. Whomever is the first to start a weekly topic, that will be the topic of the week, but do try to give others a chance. So without further ado, I'll begin.
Celebrity culture: With the Academy Awards having been presented last night, I couldn't help but be reminded of how much I dislike celebrity culture. The media hypes performers and tells us what's popular, and "cool". I didn't watch Sunday's award show, but it became the main topic of discussion among nearly every media outlet. Thus in order for me to avoid hearing about it, I'd have been required to sit in the bathroom all day with my eyes shut and fingers planted deep in my ears. From winners, to losers, to fashion, every aspect of the show and attending celebrities was discussed today. I fail to see why these performers are viewed as god-like entities. I've had the opportunity to meet a number of celebrities, even had one over at my house, but I can only recall being remotely "starstruck" on one instance. That was when I spoke to my favorite singer over the phone. Everyone else, I viewed as being just another person who I've seen or heard of. Nothing special, just a person who got lucky.
I enjoy movies, music and other forms of entertainment media as much as the next person, but I don't obsess over the performers. Why should we care what these people do in their spare time? Who cares that Angelina Jolie adopted another kid? That woman collects children on her vacations, like normal people collect shot glasses. Does it really matter what celebrity couples are separating, or who is dating someone new? Does it affect your life? Does it inspire the way your day will unfold? Then why does the media make it such an issue? I just don't get it.
