I, personally assumed that Ash's Pikachu was always a boy. (Given that his counterpart Red's Pikachu, Pika, is a boy helps this), and Dawn's buneary is a girl and loves Pikachu.
But I know some people disagree. What do you think and why?

Fiery Tiamat Pikachu is male. Female Pikachu have heart-shaped tails now. ChuChu (Yellows Female Pikachu) had a flat tail. I do think Ash's Pikachu is a boy though.

Yellow-kun Fiery Tiamat Pikachu is male. Female Pikachu have heart-shaped tails now. ChuChu (Yellows Female Pikachu) had a flat tail. I do think Ash's Pikachu is a boy though. But how long ago was that? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a Pikachu with a heart shaped tail in a more recent episode of the Anime. If Ash's Pikachu WAS female, surely they would've changed the shape of its tail.

His Pikachu is male according to the English dub of Pokemon. Watch the episode with the 'evil' Togepi. It uses attract and it works on Pikachu, and the Togepi was female.

[Ren The Ryoko] chelseamay95 Yellow-kun Fiery Tiamat Pikachu is male. Female Pikachu have heart-shaped tails now. ChuChu (Yellows Female Pikachu) had a flat tail. I do think Ash's Pikachu is a boy though. thats from before they started to change the appearence between male and female I think the point was that Pikachu was drawn before they made those changes as well. But if Pikachu WAS meant to be female, they should've changed the male Pikachu's sprite instead of the female's.
