Ugh...
After a long 7.5 month Alaskan winter, I am so ready to dig my hands into the earth and get my gardens talking again.
I've lived in Alaska all my life... I've done some traveling, but never long enough to study the seasons of gardening in other regions.

Spring time here usually hits mid to late March, sometimes as late as mid April... by then I've got most of the veggies I plan to grow (Usually tomatoe, pepper, lettuce, and carrot) seeded in the dirt, kept inside (obviously, as it's still a mere 40-some degrees here). I have to wait midsummer or even early fall to plant flowers or fruits, as the soil and the weather never seems quite right beforehand...

But I guess what i'm interested in is what the gardening seasons are where you live? What do you plant, and when?

... Do you sing to your plants too? blaugh

Up until last fall our yard was almost completely in shade. during a storm, we lost most of a tree, I am hoping this year I can plant a few things, herbs if I can. Tomatoes and peppers after that. I can't even find things that grow well in the shade. I've even managed to kill hostas. I'm thinking a sculpture garden might be the right idea smile

Yeah, i'm studying to see what sort of plants are fond of shade. Ferns, Barroom plants... I want some plants in my room, but I only have one window in my room and where it's placed I don't get much light. I'm thinking of punching a hole in the wall and putting in another window or two, but then... I'd lose wall space for art! The one downfall of living in a small hippie house is the inability to have both wallspace and window... /sigh.

oh my! Yes I do sing to my plants! *giggles* I had the best tomatos the year I started singing to my garden as I watered it. I had a tune stuck in my head and then I made a spell out of it. Every time I watered the garden I'd sing that and it worked wonderfully! I plan to write it down and use it again this year. I have yet to put my plants in the ground, so hopefully they grow fast and strong and produce well for me.

This year I'm planting viking potatos, isis candy cherry tomatos, roma tomatos, variety bell peppers, onions, garlic, zucchini, yellow squash, potimarron squash, eggplant, rooster spur peppers, sweet corn, carrots, broccoli, lettuces, and a diverse herb garden.

I try to plant heirloom varieties. I order my seeds from http://www.seedsavers.org/

In Kentucky, spring started anywhere from mid-March to mid-April, depending on how badly Old Man Winter wanted to hold on. Then Summer lasted well into October. Sometimes it ended September, but rarely. And just about anything would grow in that clay if was broke up enough. Now I'm in a much cooler climate and I'm learning to adjust. The temps are where it throws me off. It's summer now, but my mind keeps referring to spring or fall, depending on the humidity.
