What kind of music do you listen to while relaxing or meditating? Is there a specific sound you're looking for, earth sounds, ocean waves, drums?
I find myself almost veering towards gypsy music--I don't dance, but I do manage to become immersed in the beat. For sitdown, enjoy listening to forest sounds and drums.

I had the HARDEST time learning to tune everything out and tried all kinds of meditation music to help me relax. That was until my friend gave me music of a band called "Florence and the Machine" though some of her music refers to God and her music isn't nature sounds or such, her music was the first thing to help me relax and meditate. I still listen to it and meditate to it. Other than her music, I look for chanting and particulary like the Mummers Song which is known as "pagan music" and is very beautiful.

i think it depends on the meditation.like if i'm trying to relax and just purify myself i'll go for slow calm chanting or maybe nice violin music(i love the violin). but if i'm trying to meditate on fire and bring that energy out, i'll blare some linken park or fort minor or something like that. for watery type stuff i go for slow love songs. earth is celtic instumentals and air is just anythign happy sounding. so i'd say it depends on your needs that day.

I'm always listening to different music, and it's a relief to find out that others can't listen to the same stuff all the time.

I prefer drums and flutes, the sort of things that can be classified as having a Native American sortof sound.

Yeah my favorite sound off my relaxation tapes is a crackling campfire accompanied by flutes and drums. It is very Native American and beautiful. But sometimes that music can become too powerful for me and I just want to dance and move so it is more for rituals or other things for me.

Ocean sounds and rain make me sleepy. When I worked 3rd shift, I slept to natural sounds to help me sleep. First you relax, and then once the music takes hold you drift off with ease.

shadowflameguardian Do you all prefer your music with or without words? for me that depends. sometimes the words get in the way of whatever mood or energy i'm trying to attune to. other times the words help.

Try as i might, i can never find ANY meditation music i like. Except for this one CD i found in a store, it had a bunch of nature sounds with some calm background music in it. When i went back to buy it, it was gone. So normally i just try to keep the place silent when i work.

I prefer no words, truly. I can't quiet my mind from trying to listen, can't block it out, but if I don't have it once in a while I'll accidentally slip too far under to come back peacefully.
Nothing like passing out during meditation. I snore. xD

Nothing like passing out during meditation. I snore. xD I usually prefer a mix too but not for the same reasons. The wordless songs tend to be slow and peaceful while my songs with words help me to concentrate on what I am doing (used almost like white noise) and really get me into my meditation. Strangely, no matter how relaxed I have gotten, I stil have never drifted off to sleep. I can't sleep when I am doing something which is odd.

I'm trying to phase out using music at all personally. I find it to be a hindrance if you end up too dependent on it.
