In 1541 of the forth age(Gondor reckoning) Legolas built a Grey ship in Ithilien, and sailed down Anduin and so over Sea; and with him, it is said, went Gimli the Dwarf. And when that ship passed an end was come in Middle-earth of the Fellowship of the Ring.

ok first question. Why did Gandalf and frodo leave middle-earth and sail to the gray havens? Gandalf left middle-earth with the ring bares(Elrond has Vilya, mightiest of the 3 elvish rings, Galadriel has Nenya, the ring made of mithril, and Gandalf has Narya the great, the 3rd elvish ring.) Frodo in turn having cared the one ring was granted a special honor along with Bilbo(the original barer of the ring) the rights to sail in to the undieing lands. plus the wound Frodo got on weathertop pained him to much for it never healed fully so the Elvish granted him the right to go with them to heal it.(in 1482 of the 4th age(gondor) after the death of mistress rose, wife of master Samwise, on midyear's day. on september 22 master Samwise rides out from Bag End. he comes to the tower hills, and is last seen by Elanor, to whom he gives the red book afterwards kept by the fairbairns. among them the tradition is handed down from Elanor that samwise passed the towers, and went to the gray havens, and passed over the sea, last of the ring-bearers.)
2nd question: Why did the elves leave middle-earth? short answer...They where home sick for the land they came from. The Elves(called the first born) came before man into middle-earth during the war between the Valar and Melkor. The elves where sent to middle-earth to protect them from Melkor. so in gray ships the valar put the elves and they pushed the sleeping elves out to sea. they awoke on the shores of middle-earth they where the first to see the stars those the loved the stars and sea most and long to return to Valanor over the sea from whence they where created. So as man the younger. grew under the training of the elves they(man) moved on and built there own places and the elves waited tell man was strong enough to rule and survive by itself. And so after the Kings return they passed over the sea in the gray ships they arrived in.
well I hope this answers ur question if not, ill try again to better answer them.

Xx_iiOwnYew_xX Oh wow didnt expect that much XD ok hmmm :/ Who would you say was more powerful, morgoth befor he was killed or sauron as he was... bedfor... he was... yhh destroyed razz Melkor(Morgoth) was stronger and when he got destroyed the first time he lost some of his power but very little. and when he returned as Sauron he was just only a little weaker or just as strong for his life force was tied to the ring there for his power was probably the same as before. So. id say Melkor is the strongest form of Sauron.

That was the first book I read, before the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings. I'm saying that if they wanna know what happens after they should look in the appendices.
