I've never made an entire costume before, and I don't really want to buy a sewing machine...
Do any of you guys sew your costumes by hand? What's the process, and how long does it take?

Likewise, if you sew by machine, what are the pros and cons?

I've done both, and I strongly recommend buying a sewing machine. Unless you know all the different stitching work (zig zag, straight running, cross stitch, etc) and are a master of them all, hand sewing is very time consuming, and the end product usually suffers a bit in quality. They only con I can think of with the sewing machine is it's price. Other then that though, it allows you to sew together all your patterns in a matter of hours rather then the weeks it would take hand stitching it all.

I normally do all my cosplays by hand because it seems easier for me, but sewing machine rather preferred because its more effective and quicker. But practice is needed with sewing machine cause you need to learn to control the speed, sewing machine is better I think depends... The stitches are clean and all..

Do you guys use patterns?

If it's a basic costume I'll use pre existing patterns from Joanns and just modify the pattern. However for more complex costume's like my Lady cosplay, I'll make my own patterns. Although I'm only able to do that since I've actually taken a pattern making class.

like what Pleurer said, it is basic. I would suggest using patterns cause you wouldn't want to start on the real cosplay (costume. anything) right away since you might mess it up and start rambeling in gibberish wink
I make my own patterns and eye ball some of them. I never had exp. for sewing until I learned I did. Patterns is like sculpting. Just need to crop a few pieces and all.
btw, Pleurer, where did you take pattern making classes, sounds very interesting!

Joanns and Occupational schools like west valley offer them.

I personally did mine at a West Valley since it's right across from my college.
