Infection
Left 4 Dead picks up on four survivors, two weeks into a massive outbreak of a rage virus. Infected have zombie-like features and are equally difficult to dispose of, but seem more driven by an uncontrollable rage than by hunger. They are often seen beating and tearing apart their victims rather than attempting to eat them.
The Survivors are immune, meaning that they can be bludgeon to dead by the infected, but not infected themselves. The group, working as a team, tries to make their way from safe house to safe house in an attempt to escape the infected area.
These two teams of Survivors, one from the North and the other from the South, are brought together somewhere in the middle, both working towards the other in hopes of finding uninfected areas. There seems only one more direction to head, to the west coast.

Carriers
A new breed of infected. They show no signs of infection, and have no malicious intent by nature, but carry the rage virus in their blood. Coming into contact with any bodily function or blood from one of these can infect those not yet infected, but also not immune.
